PussPo/Element‘ EP is scheduled for December 1 release, with “Element” streamable in full below.

COMBAT! ‘Av(r)on’ (Walrus Ghost Remix)

For the better part of the last decade, Mark Nieto (a.k.a. COMBAT!) has been a regular fixture in LA’s underground via appearances on local radio and performances across the city. Melding experimental electronics with floating guitar work, Nieto’s various inclinations culminate in his work as COMBAT!, with his brilliant self-titled debut album on Friends of Friends the crowning piece.

As a follow up to the album release, Nieto has passed on a remix of album cut “Av(r)on” by Brooklyn producer Walrus Ghost—an artist who may be familiar to our regular readers—as one of today’s XLR8R downloads. The remix precedes a new Walrus Ghost EP with guitarist Max Frankl twists COMBAT!’s original cut into more ambient-driven territory.

You can download the remix via WeTRansfer below, with COMBAT! available to purchase via Bandcamp.

Premiere: Hear a New Track from Mathew Jonson & Sebastian Mullaert

Sebastian Mullaert (a.k.a. one-half of Minilogue) and Mathew Jonson (a.k.a. one-third of Cobblestone Jazz) will release a collaborative single, titled “Pollen 4 Life,” via Hypercolour on December 2.

“Pollen 4 Life” was produced in one day during a series of sessions in Mullaert’s studio in the idyllic woods of Röstånga, Sweden, two summers ago. The nature-filled area was an inspiring vehicle for the pair, as Mullaert explains: “the freeing up of space and time allows an artist to rediscover him or herself. Frames can’t be too rigid, static detail hinders the process to unfold in a beautiful way.” Mostly jamming out ambient-driven pieces, “Pollen 4 Life” was “made on a day the mood took them in the direction of the dance floor.”

The hypnotic single will arrive with a stripped-back dub version on the b-side—both of the tracks are extended, mind-bending trips from two masters of the game. Ahead of the release later this week, you can stream “Pollen 4 Life” in full via the player above.

Andrew Broder ‘Son RMX’ (feat. Trim)

Andrew Broder—best known for making lo-fi indie rock as Fog—recently took a musical detour with his Wertheimer EP. Comprised of four richly-detailed, techno-tinged excursions, the release includes the original, instrumental version of “Son,” which has now been rebooted with vocals from East London MC, Trim.

Elaborating on the backstory behind this new remix, Broder explains: “I met Trim at the Michelberger Festival in Berlin and we got to hang and vibe out at the Funkhaus studio for a few days, which was exciting because I was already a fan of his record. I played him a few things and when he heard this it was instant “yes” all around. We’ll be doing more stuff soon, this is just the beginning.”

“Son RMX” is available to download now via the WeTransfer button below.

Barker & Baumecker Turns

2016 has been a colorful year at the steely offices of Ostgut Ton. Alongside a heap of techno releases, the Berghain-affiliated imprint also let loose an acid-fueled EP by Matthew Styles, joyful house from Nick Höppner & Gonno, an ambient LP by Luke Slater’s 7th Plain project, and Virginia‘s pop-heavy debut full-length.

As the year draws to a close, the addition of an album by Sam Barker (a.k.a. Voltek) and Andreas Baumecker (a.k.a. nd_Baumecker) goes some way to extending that scope further. Known for a certain unpredictability when they get together in the studio, the Barker & Baumecker back-catalog covers all sorts of electronic ground. The duo’s debut full-length, for example, was celebrated for the variety of angles it approached regular house and techno from.

Their latest outing together, Turns, is a tale of two albums—a dichotomy that pivots on the brief, echoic interlude of “Technogate.” What precedes that short-lived breather is as theatrical as techno can be. The three intricately-woven cuts, though all quite different, share some key ingredients in common: drama, darkness and grandeur.

It’s easy to get lost in 12-minute epic “Senden,” a lofty opener that moves through a number of episodes, from moody chords, through some broken beats, ending in a chorus of climactic chimes. The pair continue story-telling in “Encipher & Decipher,” where a beatless, piano-driven opening gives way to a bellowing kick. At this point, four-to-the-floor techno is almost forgotten and it’s a welcome punch; a contrast from the awkward, squelchy beats of “Club Entropicana.”

The pair undergo a personality shift in the latter half of the album. Abstract expressionism falls to the wayside, as they adopt a more typically dancefloor-ready demeanour. There’s the washed-out Detroit vibes of “Nocturnal,” or the optimistic “Turnhalle,” a chugging track that sounds like a Livity Sound record in full effect. 14-minute closer “Statik,” one of the LP’s finest moments, also carries some UK flavor in its precise, filtered-out percussion, which loads the atmospheric techno with energy. As its final minutes drop off into euphoric synths, the murkiness that came before is forgotten.

The two sides are quite difficult to square, with only a few telltale production traits connecting them. As a whole, it’s an album that requires patience and faith; but, committing to its lengthy and often spaced-out tracks will reward.

The intricate design work that runs throughout Turns is masterful, rendering the techno-related productions as intriguing as they are exciting.

Turns is out now. Order it at the Ostgut Ton store

Aphex Twin Plays Field Day 2017

Aphex Twin has been booked for Field Day 2017.

The performance will be Richard D. James’ first performance in his native UK for half a decade (his last being a DJ set, back in October 2012). He is the first artist to be announced by Field Day, and is booked in for a two-hour set at the festival’s new indoor arena, The Barn.

On the news, festival co-founder Tom Baker stated: “It’s truly amazing to have Aphex Twin headline Field Day, I’ve been listening to him since I was 16, he played and curated some of the first ever Eat Your Own Ears nights (the most memorable being a warehouse on Brick Lane that got closed down by the police!) so it’s an incredible honour to have him play.”

Prior to that gig, Aphex Twin will also perform at Day for Night in Texas this December.

Field Day will take place at London’s Victoria Park, on June 3, 2017. Tickets for the festival go on sale December 1 at 09:00 GMT.
