Pioneer DJ Launches WeDJ iPhone App

Pioneer has taken WeDJ to iPhone.

The app, which was originally available only on iPad, has been optimized for use on iPhones. It allows users to mix tracks without the need for hardware, by lifting tracks from your iTunes library.

The app functions as follows: the Sync button can be used for beat-matching, while the Auto Gain option adjusts volumes to the correct level. According to Pioneer, this then allows time to use “Hot Cues, loops, Pad FX and Combo FX to make your mix unique.” Users can also connect the DDJ-WeGO4/WeGO3 controller to get tactile control of the mix.

You can download the app now from the iTunes store (available for free until November 28). Check out the video below for a taste of what to expect from the app.

Charles Fenckler ‘Estrange’

Following a chance SoundCloud find, Soma Records signed young French techno artist Charles Fenckler to its roster with his Anklam EP. Since then, Fenckler has cemented his name as one a France’s most promising and exciting techno artists via support from industry bigwigs such as Jeff Mills, Mercel Dettmann, Josh Wink, and Alan Fitzpatrick.

Following the standout Frozen Room EP—released earlier this year—Fenckler unleashed “Stellar Acid,” the first single to be pulled from his debut album, Diving From The Void. The single also included a remix from fellow French artist Francois X and showed that Fenckler is set to continue his meteoric rise once the album drops tomorrow, November 25.

As a further tease, Fenckler has offered up album cut “Estrange” as one of today’s XLR8R downloads, available to grab via WeTransfer below

Romans Valere Aude

By now, you pretty much know what you are going to get from the music of Gunnar Haslam and Tin Man. The former has fomented a chilly and slithering techno style on labels like L.I.E.S and Argot, while the latter is all about coaxing as much life as he can out of his beloved 303. What’s more, both have an atmospheric and elegantly mournful style, so when they collaborate as Romans, the results are effortlessly seamless.

At the same time, it’s fair to say there are no real surprises on Valere Aude, the pair’s debut album for Bunker New York. The whole thing follows a classic long-player arc and includes a requisite ambient reset along the way, but that’s not to say it isn’t enjoyable: so complementary and perfected are their styles that the whole thing plays out like a meditation, sending you forever deeper into their greyscale soundworld.

Cerebral throughout, the album rolls through slow and pillowy stuff, churning groove undulations and on-your-toes-techno. The mood is often sombre and serene, far-gazing yet insular. Though not explicitly linked in any specific way to “examining ancient Roman civilization” as per the backstory, there is an unmistakable sense of classicism to the release. It feels shrouded in mystery and comes over like a rueful and romanticized muse on some forgotten time.

This is particularly true of the distant decaying melodies and haunting pads of “Locria.” Or on “Cyrene,” the ambitious nine-minute ambient track centred around muted synth modulations that are all bleary-eyed and hopeless. That is the centerpiece of the album, with things building to a peak before then and hitting rather harder after. Throughout “Legia,” it’s hard not to imagine frosty autumnal landscapes, rolling mists and silvery grey clouds. On “Zarai” we’re treated to about as hypnotic an acid line as you will ever hear, while in other places the 303 gets skewed, stretched and smoothed out in mind melting ways.

From track to track, the focus ranges from meandering lead lines to clacking percussion, pulsing bass to more manic and paranoid stabs, and those subtle shifts keep things vital. This might not be an album that breaks much new ground, then, but what it does do, it does so expertly that you cannot help but be absorbed.

Scarper ‘Lacuna’ (Jani R Remix)

London-based producer Scarper will drop his latest EP, Lacuna, on December 9 via Plexus Records. Although Lacuna will be Scarper’s first official release in over two years, it follows a string of remixes, including one for bass artist Reso, and a contribution to the acclaimed Touched Bass compilation alongside the likes of John Tejada and The Hacker.

“Lacuna” will be the first single taken from Scarper’s debut album, which is due to land early next year, and features remixes from fellow Plexus alum Pause and Jani R. The single and its remixes sit comfortably with the stylings of Aphex Twin and early Warp releases, but also stand as modern interpretations of the sound.

In support of the single, Scarper and Plexus have offered up Jani R’s remix of “Lacuna” as a download via WeTransfer below.

UK producer and DJ Shamos heads up a monthly late night slot on NTS Radio that showcases an eclectic selection of house, left-field hip-hop, warped new wave, and everything in between.

Sam Weston ‘Don’t Save Face’ (Extended Edit)

Australia’s Mushroom Group is set to launch its first electronic music imprint, Soothsayer. The label will aim to showcase Australia’s rising talent, from left-field house to experimental pop and everything in between. To kick things off, on December 2, Soothsayer will drop Sam Weston‘s Never Been In Love EP; with Sydney XLR8R alum Dro Carey (a.k.a. Tuff Sherm) and Melbourne pop duo ALTA rounding out the label’s inaugural signings.

The first taste of Never Been In Love arrived late last month when Weston—who is also one-half of Alba—dropped “Don’t Save Face,” the record’s brilliant b-side. In the weeks following, Australia’s premier radio stations picked up on the track and it’s been on high rotation since. To further entice listeners the world over, Weston and Soothsayer have offered up “Don’t Save Face” as today’s XLR8R download. Across the track’s 13-minute run, Weston demonstrates his knack for crafting effortless and catchy house hooks; and, with its loose and swinging feel-good nature, obvious parallels could be drawn to artists such as Leon Vynehall and Motor City Drum Ensemble.

You can download “Don’t Save Face” via WeTransfer below, along with a stream and the EP’s next single. Ahead of the December 2 release date, you can pre-order Never Been In Love via Juno.
