COPY ‘You’re An Odd One’

Portland-based producer Marius Libman (a.k.a. COPY) will release his fifth studio album, Chosen Atmospheric Pieces, on October 28 via Gold Robot Records. After completing his previous album in 2012, Libman took an extended hiatus from solo work to focus on his band Sun Angle and to give himself a chance to approach songwriting and production from a different, more subtle angle. The resulting album shows a stylistic shift to deeper sounds, one focused on atmosphere and winding melodic structures.

To wet the appetite of listeners ahead of the official release of the forthcoming album, Libman and Gold Robot Records have offered up LP cut “You’re An Odd One” as today’s XLR8R download. From the first few bars of the track, Libman’s knack for soundtrack-esque emotion is made apparent as shimmering synth lines cascade over swinging nuanced beats.

You can download “You’re An Odd One” via WeTransfer below, with the album available for preorder here.

Headless Horseman Next Up in Ask the Experts; Send Him Your Questions Now

A number of months back, we announced the re-launch of our Ask the Experts series, and invited you to get the answers to everything you could possibly have ever wanted to know from Gerd Janson; we then followed that up with sessions in the hot seat from Mathew Jonson and, most recently, DeWalta. We can now announce that September’s expert is Headless Horseman.

It’s hard to find too much information on Headless Horseman. In his own words, he likes to “keep his secrets under lock and key.” And a February 2016 email interview with RA—the single source of any information about the mysterious project—did little to enlighten those who read it: responding in flamboyant prose absent of much coherency, the artist discussed many things but was clearly averse to revealing anything about himself or the alias that first surfaced with a three-track white label in 2013.

It is partly for this reason that we’re so excited to have him in the seat as this month’s expert; after all, this column was designed to get our favorite artists talking on subjects that they might typically not do otherwise. But also there is the music: while Horseman’s profile is unlikely to ever drift too far from the shadows, his work—both his live set and productions—has been some of the most talked about in techno spheres ever since he followed up his 2014 debut performance at Berlin’s Atonal festival with a debut album last year.

The Horseman, he assures us, does not care to divulge upon the project much, but this is a rare chance to run your questions—on anything you like—by one of the most exciting techno artists of recent times. All questions should be sent to [email protected]; we’ll pass them along to Headless Horseman who will select his favorites, and at the end of the month, we’ll publish his answers.

DVS1 Announces HUSH 20

Zak Khutoretsky (a.k.a. DVS1) has revealed details of his HUSH 20 European tour.

In a statement made via his Facebook account, Khutoretsky yesterday announced that he would be going on European tour this October and November. The series of gigs have been plotted in celebration of HUSH’s 20 years (the umbrella for his sound company, illegal parties and record label), promising “special events dedicated to his life-long pursuit of the beat & rhythm.”

Khutoretsky’s first stop will be in Rotterdam, with a one-off “Wall of Sound” gig—a tribute to the early Midwest rave scene that was fundamental to his musical development. From there on in, he will travel to Leipzig, Milan, Lyon, and Lisbon amongst other cities, before finishing up in Tbilisi. Along the way he will do a handful of all night long performances, as well as going back to back with Ben Sims in Lyon, and inviting Jeff Mills, Blawan and Ghetto (a resident of his Minneapolis party) to spin elsewhere.

Aside from the gigs, Khutoretsky also promised some “secret parties” that he could not list, as well as a “new record coming out on the label.”

For more information, head to the HUSH 20 Facebook page.

B12 Lines Up New EP on Central Processing Unit

B12 has a new EP on the way via Central Processing Unit.

British producer Steve Rutter resurrected the B12 moniker (a project that he formerly worked on alongside Michael Golding) in 2015, following years of inactivity. Working under various aliases—including Redcell, 2001 and Musicology—the pair were responsible for some of the most important releases in ’90s intelligent techno and electronica, mostly via their label, also entitled B12.

In its recent reincarnation, B12 has released a flurry of EPs on Delsin, Soma, De:tuned, and Rutter’s recently established FireScope imprint. His next EP, All Abandon All, will drop on Central Processing Unit this October—a four track EP that will touch on electro, IDM and ambient styles.

All Abandon All is expected to drop this October. Stream snippets below.

Worldwide FM Hits the Airwaves

Worldwide FM, a new online radio network, has been launched.

Worldwide FM is the new co-project between veteran selector Gilles Peterson and Boiler Room’s Thris Tian. Founded in London, the online network is soon to be putting offices in Los Angeles and elsewhere in Europe into action. To help with selections, the duo have drafted in Tokyo’s Toshio Matsuura and Brussels’ DJ Lefto to be global ambassadors for the station, and will also be calling on “friends and family” to assist in presenting shows, interviews and live sessions.

Gaming fans may recognize the station’s name, as Peterson was a host for a network by the same name on Grand Theft Auto V.

Tune in at worldwidefm.net.

Video: Point Blank Explores What’s Possible With Rekordbox DJ.

For years now, Pioneer‘s Rekordbox has been used as a powerful cataloguing software for DJs to organise their music, playlists, and sets. This year Pioneer expanded the software to become Rekordbox DJ, a fully-functional mixing software capable of creative performance and effects.

Hear a Track from the Debut Album by COMBAT!

On September 16, LA’s Mark Nieto (a.k.a. COMBAT!) will release his self-titled debut album on Friends of Friends.

With “past relationships, growing pains, and an unavoidable sense of place (and displacement)” as the backbone for the album, Nieto weaves together 13 rich and emotive cuts to soundtrack his home in LA. Stunning guitar work is at the forefront of COMBAT!, swelling in harmonic waves on top of the swinging beats LA has become so well known for. Although this is Nieto’s official debut as COMBAT!, the album shows a producer totally in tune with his sound, crafting a mature and patient ride that is rarely heard on a debut.

Ahead of the September 16, you can stream “The Firefall And The Temple” in full below.

Download a New Mix from Bambooman

Last month, Leeds producer Bambooman released Feel on Accidental Jnr, the new sub-label of Matthew Herbert’s Accidental Records.

The EP follows a string of well-received releases on Sonic Router and Health—Bambooman’s own imprint—with four diverse cuts that are a natural fit for Herbert’s eclectic world. From the found-sound ambience of opening cut, “Stargaze,” to the title track’s warped, feel-good groove and the industrial gallop of “Crushed,” it’s an EP that manages to stride confidently across styles all the while staying coherent.

As a follow up to the EP, Bambooman has supplied us with a mix as diverse as its EP predecessor. Across its 50 minutes, the UK producer expertly traverses through experimental synth tracks, tripped-out hip-hop, and everything in between.

You can stream and download the mix below.
