Sub Club Launches Label, Nautilus Rising

Glasgow’s renowned clubbing institution Sub Club is launching a label, Nautilus Rising.

Known for its world class residents, a dedication to quality and longevity, and, not to mention, having its Subculture Saturday night be known as the world’s longest running house and techno night, Sub Club has long cemented its reputation in the clubbing world. The label further cements that reputation with the launch of its first record label, which will kick off with NR001, an EP stacked with world class cuts from an all-Scottish cast. Three of the artists on the EP, Alex Smoke, Vince Watson, and Lord of the Isles, helped launch the label at a Boiler Room showcase yesterday, alongside Harri & Domenic. Stephen Hopkin is the fourth artist on the inaugural EP.

The record is set for a limited run vinyl release on October 15, with the digital release following in November. In the meantime, Nautilus Rising has shared previews of all four cuts, which you can stream via the players below.

Eagles and Butterflies Announces New Album

Eagles & Butterflies the English-born artist who has been showing up on radars and gaining support from the likes of Dixon, Âme, John Digweed, Tale Of Us and many more, has just completed his second studio album, an 11-track work titled Abstract.

Abstract is scheduled for release October 26 release via Beatport, and will be available for pre-order on November 13. Release via all other shops will be on November 20.

With a string of further releases on Caramelo, Kompakt and Snork Enterprises under his belt, it came as no surprise when he was voted Newcomer of the Year 2013 by the readers of Groove, an award that was accompanied by the #2 slot for Remix of the Year 2013 for his version of “No One Gets Left Behind”, from DJ Yellow and Flowers and Sea Creatures. Sibold’s output to date reflects an artist with an ability to blend genres like few others, and that’s what he done on this week’s XLR8Rpodcast.

Additionally, there are three releases – two 12”s and a 7” – of Nils & Olafur’s works available for sale now, the newest being Loon, which features new, unreleased music.

Premiere: Hear Kenton Slash Deamons “Syko”

Opening with twisted, almost unrecognizable vocal samples and swelling waves of noise, the nostalgic-tinged “Syko” is a beautiful, organic slice of house music reminiscent of the likes DJ Koze and his Pampa label. It’s the slightly darker, low-slung brother to the previously released “Harpe,” perfect for getting lost on the dancefloor in the early hours of the morning.

Weekly Selections: Horst Festival, Sustain Release, Percolate

Sustain-Release returns for its second year this weekend Sep 11-13 to Camp Lakota in the Catskill mountains of upstate New York featuring acts like The Black Madonna, Mike Servito, Veronica Vasicka, Paula Temple, and Beautiful Swimmers. Belgium’s Horst Arts and Music Festival takes place also for its second year this Friday and Saturday, located in the surroundings of a castle in the green valley of the Hageland hills, and boasting a stellar musical lineup with acts Gerd Janson, FaltyDL / Waajeed – live, Palms Trax, and others, plus visual interactive art curation by architect duo Gijs Van Vaerenbergh. Over in the U.K. on Saturday, XLR8R podcast alumni Leon Vynehall is set to play an eight hour all night set for Percolate at the intimate 200 capacity Studio Spaces E2 loft in Shoreditch.

Premiere: Hear a Track off Alixander III’s Upcoming EP

Alixander III of the duo Azari & III is set to release his newest EP, Heavy Friends Pt. II, via Toy Tonics.

Set to release on September 14, each of the EP’s four tracks feature guest vocalists and producers, all of whom are Toronto natives, like Alixander himself. The release represents the city adequately, proving that Toronto is very much in tune when it comes to its display of classic and soulful techno. The track “Go On And Touch Me,” which is featured as an exclusive premiere on XLR8R before its release, is a joint production effort from Alixander III and Tuxxedo, who together create a dark, wavering techno cut with a compelling Detroit influence.

Gordon “What You Want”

Founded in 2006, the eclectic French record label InFiné has over one-hundred-fifty releases under its belt from a large array of well-respected artists including Apparat, Oxia, Rone, and label co-founder, Agoria. To celebrate its ninth anniversary, InFiné released the eleven track compilation album Explorer #1 on August 28. The multifarious compilation refuses to stick to a single genre and features tracks that are strictly classical and atmospheric, while others have a rigorous, dance-oriented attitude.

French DJ and producer Gordon, who has been a central component of the label’s success, has offered up his cut “What You Want” as an exclusive download on XLR8R. The track is an unshakeable and rousing house jam with a spruce demeanour, using a multitude of sensuous vocal samples on top of lush drums that give the song its fashionable warmth and style. This is the second Gordon track that we have featured in our download section, you can download his previous cut, “MK Ultra,” off his debut EP, Bleu Merle, by going here.

Bob Moses Kicks Off LP and North American Tour at Symbiosis Gathering

The deeply contemplative sounds of Tom Howie and Jimmy Vallance, known as the duo Bob Moses, have successfully created a middling and brooding sonic landscape that teeters between the organic and the electronic in a wholly unique fashion. The Vancouver-born, New York-based duo is set to release its debut album, Days Gone By, via Domino Records on September 18 before embarking on a two month North America Tour.

To start off its tour, Bob Moses will be performing its Days Gone By LP live for the first time at this year’s Symbiosis Gathering in Oakdale, CA on September 19th—just a day after the release of the album. The festival is hosting a great deal of talented artists this year including Nicolas Jaar, Gaiser, Justin Martin, Pantha Du Prince, fellow Domino signee Four Tet and many, many more.

Dates for Debut Tour of David August & Ensemble Announced

Twenty-four year old composer, musician, and Hamburg native David August has experienced a wild rise to fame this year, being named one of Resident Advisor’s top five live acts in the world and also selling out his most recent North American Tour. August has now decided to evolve his live performance by throwing four new musicians into the mix. His ensemble consists of three musicians: vocalist and harpist Sissi Rada, guitarist Max Trieder, and Marcel Braun on percussion and vocals. Having previously performed with the group at XJazz Festival in Berlin and Electronic Beats festival in Cologne, David August & Ensemble will take to the road this year for a month long PROLOG tour for the very first time.

Various Artists: The Nite Owl Buffet Vol. 1

When you’ve had a great night at the club, you just may end up at a diner with your friends afterwards—at least according to Alex Burkat. While the Philly/NYC–based producer does indeed love a good plate of pancakes, there’s more to his love of diners than just breakfast classics served by a waitress calling you “toots”: “Talk to your average person and say you like techno, they’ll start to imagine some Ibiza-looking kind of guy,” he says. “But house and techno are as American as diners and apple pie, and those are things from the U.S. that I’m actually proud of.”

It’s with the same pride and diner-booth-camaraderie that Burkat and Chicago’s Chrissy run The Nite Owl Diner, an imprint as focused on showcasing the talent of their musical friends as it is pushing the breadth and sound of modern house music. Now four releases in, the Nite Owl Diner has caught the ears of DJs across the globe, with records from the Black Madonna and Nautiluss quickly demanding represses. Last week brought on the young imprint’s first mini-compilation, The Nite Owl Buffet Vol 1 four-tracker.

Burkat himself leads off the release with “Out2C”, a cut that he says was originally conceived of as a dubstep tune, before he slowed it down and smoothing out the rhythm into a driving house number. “We’re not putting out just bangers,” he says. “Sometimes, we’re deliberately putting out records that will be good for early in the night or winding down late at night with friends.” The track falls somewhere between those two extremes, using a pressurized thudding bass and shuffling beat to hypnotize your head and move your feet. The next tune, “Work,” keeps the Chicago vibes going, with Smart Bar and Argot affiliate Savile teaming up with fresh-faced Chicago producer JKnochel. Imbued with equal parts pysche and jack, the number is built around an arpeggiated synth riff, just the right amount of snare, and the classic “work me, god damn it” vocal sample..

Boston music maker Ali Berger takes the driving momentum from those two numbers, hits the gas, and never turns back with his club burner “WKL,” a Dance Mania–esque club banger that rides a simple yet addictive groove, one that shifts ever so slightly while pounding the drums at 130 bpm. Finally, keeping it all in the family , sthe snappy low-end infused “Sup” from Olin—another Smart Bar/Argot affiliate, and a frequent collaborator with Savile—sticking to the Chicago-style vibes.

Whatever’s in the coffee over at the Nite Owl Diner seems to be working brilliantly, as Burkat and Shively build serious momentum for their young imprint while playing to their strengths in showcasing the Chicago house-influenced work of friends. For club play or winding down the night, The Nite Owl Buffet Vol. 1 will have you asking for a refill. Check, please!

Mountain Range “Circles”

Leads-based artist Stuart Thomas (a.k.a. Mountain Range) last landed in XLR8R‘s downloads section back in 2013 with his track “A Silence of Three Parts,” which featured on his Adjustments EP on Bad Panda. Now, Thomas returns with his debut full-length album, A Thousand Times Troubles, to be released via his own label, Left Haunted. From the album is “Circles,” a gorgeous and intricately woven piece of melodic house. Held together by beautiful synths and low-key, muted drums, “Circles” is a patient cut that rewards the listener sonically, and emotionally. A Thousand Times Troubles will be released on October 16, and in the meantime, you can download “Circles” for free below.

HORST Announces Artist Schedule, Shares Videos

HORST music and arts festival has released its 2015 artist schedule, along with three videos and the announcement that DJ Waajeed will replace Lapalux—who had to pull out due to unforeseen circumstances.

HORST takes place in and around the beautiful castle of Horst in Holsbeek, Belgium on Friday, September 11 and Saturday, September 12.
