Premiere: Hear Seven Davis Jr. Remix Mr. G

Set to close out the forthcomingResonate EP from longstanding London house head Mr. G, a new remix from rising Los Angeles-based producer/vocalist Seven Davis Jr. is now available to stream in full. As is his speciality, Davis Jr.’s rework laces its stripped rhythms with raw flashes of funk and soul. Aside from making use of the original tune’s funk-referencing vocal samples, the remix also piles a number of organ stabs and sliding slabs of molten bass atop its sunken skip; the resulting productions comes equipped with the kind of potent groove we’ve come to expect from Davis Jr.’s efforts.

Set to appear alongside three original Mr. G productions when the veteran producer’s vinyl-only Resonate EP lands via Bristol’s Just Jack label on March 7, Seven Davis Jr.’s rework of “TT Rum Bar” is streaming in its entirety below.

Six years have passed since Tyondai Braxton released Central Market, his first solo LP after leaving the experimental rock group Battles. Now, Braxton has finally shared details of a follow-up, HIVE1, which will see the artist transition from longtime label home Warp to the Nonesuch imprint. Based on performances at New York’s Guggenheim Museum, the Sydney Opera House, the MONA FOMA festival in Tasmania, and London’s Barbican Centre, the album was originally an ensemble piece and architectural installation titled HIVE, which has now been reinterpreted and reprocessed to fit into an album format.

To celebrate the announcement, Braxton has shared the LP’s closing cut, “Scout1”, a long-form composition that adopts ancient rhythms on futuristic hardware. Leading up to the LP, Braxton will also be playing a three-day “HIVE Residency” at Knoxville’s Museum of Art on March 27, 28, and 29. Nonesuch will release HIVE1 on May 12; until then, “Scout1” can be found below, along with the upcoming record’s full tracklist.

Weird Magic party promoter and photographer Erez Avissar has announced plans to launch a new label, Purple Trax, and has shared the imprint’s inaugural compilation of unreleased music. According to the founder, Purple Trax will feature “independent, experimental music that wouldn’t otherwise get properly released.” To that end, the label’s first endeavor, Purple Trax Vol. 1, features new work from the likes of Huerco S., Aurora Halal, Terekke, Logan Takahashi (of Teengirl Fantasy), and Traxman. The entire compilation is currently streaming on SoundCloud, but Purple Trax hopes to press the music on vinyl with help from fans on Kickstarter. Zenker Brothers Immersion

Although they had been consistent producers on their own for years, when Munich’s Zenker Brothers (a.k.a. Marco and Dario Zenker) teamed up in 2011, their sound coalesced into something special. The four years since have seen the Ilian Tape bosses release just as many EPs, with each one making its mark on the modern techno landscape. Their sound is playful, bouncy, and boisterous, and those qualities help make their debut full-length, Immersion, a dauntless techno album.

Immersion‘s foggy stoner techno trades off dancefloor experiences, and does so in a dynamic and cohesive way. Most tracks are powered by thrumming kick drums, but the Zenkers can also move effortlessly from oppressive jungle atmospheres to E-fueled rave highs with a sense of journey. And along the way, they avoid monochrome hues by adding the warm rush of a smeared synth, pensive and celestial chords, or the distorted glow of an apocalyptic laser.

Atmosphere is king in the Zenker Brothers’ world. Even sparse, beatless tracks like “Erbquake” and “Outark” envelope the listener with their gurgling analog landscapes. The broken techno of “Ebbman” and “High Club”’s rubbery churn are intense and all-consuming; despite its reserved tempo, “Innef Runs” is an undulating roller with thunderous power; and “TSV WB” sounds like early, strobe-lit drum & bass. So it’s fair to say the aptly titled Immersion is a heady, heavy album that never lets listeners come up from the smoke and bass to catch their breath.

Scientific Dreamz of U “Sacred Fractal Geometry”

The co-hosts of NTS Radio‘s monthly Kestrel Explorations show, London producers Scientific Dreamz of U and Junior Loves will add their joint The Dreamcode album to Vancouver label 1080p‘s ever-expanding catalog early next month. Pulled from Scientific Dreamz of U’s side of the split affair is “Sacred Fractal Geometry,” a spacious endeavor that hovers just below 110 BPM, unrolling a steady stream of celestial chords and cosmic synth streaks across its languid seven-minute run. One of five original Scientific Dreamz of U productions intended to “entreat you to relax [and] listen with an alpha-wave mindstate” alongside Junior Loves’ six astral contributions to The Dreamcode, “Sacred Fractal Geometry” can be downloaded below before 1080p officially releases the UK artists’ split album in both cassette and digital form on March 10.

Samo Sound Boy Reveals Upcoming Debut LP for Body High; Hear a Track Now

LA-based producer/DJ and Body High label co-head Samo Sound Boy has revealed plans to issue his debut long-player, Begging Please, in late April. The forthcoming 10-track effort follows behind the producer’s 2014 LP alongside Jerome LOL as DJ Dodger Stadium (XLR8R visited the pair’s studio around that record’s release for an in-depth In the Studio feature), and is said to be “an honest and unguarded story about love… [an] autobiographical account of a relationship slowly breaking down and falling apart,” according to a press release. Furthermore, the press release goes on to describe Samo Sound Boy’s Begging Please LP as a record focused that is focused on “lush synth work, jagged percussion, and hauntingly soulful samples” across its run.

Tornado Wallace Drops New Single for Beats In Space, Shares Video for Lead Track

Tornado Wallace caught the attention of Beats In Space aficionados in 2013 with his debut release for the label, the languorous, tropical-sounding Desperate Pleasures EP. Now, the Melbourne-based producer (real name Lewis Day) will drop a second release for Tim Sweeney’s celebrated New York label, the Kangaroo Ground/Ferntree Gully 12″ which finds Day adding a distinctly acidic tint to his humid, midsummer aesthetic on the first track, while the flip sparks and fizzes with Italo-evoking energy. Tornado Wallace’s Kangaroo Ground/Ferntree Gully is out today as a limited-edition 12″, with a digital release set for March 10. Before then, the kaleidoscopic video for the record’s a-side effort, “Kangaroo Ground,” can be watched below.

PAN Announces Collaborative 12″ from Florian Hecker and Mark Leckey

German sound experimentalist Florian Hecker and multidisciplinary artist and 2008 Turner Prize-winner Mark Leckey have announced a forthcoming collaborative release for Bill Kouligas’ PAN imprint. According to a press release, the Hecker Leckey Sound Voice Chimera 12″ sees Hecker “decompose, modulate, and re-synthesize the vocal track from Leckey’s 2010 performance piece GreenScreenRefrigeratorAction (for which Leckey intoned the inner monologue of a black Samsung fridge) and his own 3 Channel Chronics installation from that same year, where distinct sounds from three speakers telescoping down from the ceiling were combined and altered by visitors’ movements.” The resulting productions are said to take shape as hybrid compositions in which “heavily distorted fragments of Leckey’s narrative intersperse Hecker’s synthetic textures and fidgety tonal patterns.”

The unsurprisingly abstract, elongated results of Hecker’s and Leckey’s combined efforts can be heard in full when Hecker Leckey Sound Voice Chimera sees its release on March 21 as a two-track 12″, as well as on digital formats with an additional third bonus track. Ahead of the records’ release, the artwork for PAN’s forthcoming release is on display above, while its tracklist has been included below.
