Hejira “Pinter (Hello Skinny Remix)”

Most remixes aim to present a song in a new light while still keeping something from the original intact, but sometimes, the most unique results come about from completely disregarding the source material. Such is the case with UK producer Hello Skinny‘s remix of “Pinter,” a track taken from Prayer Before Birth, the Matthew Herbert-produced record from idiosyncratic London four-piece Hijera. While the band’s version of the song is a kaleidoscopic stew of tribal drums, angular guitars, and delicate male/female vocals, Hello Skinny does away with much of the track’s meaty center—instead creating a warped and dark backbone to lay his processed loop against. The beat rolls along in stumbling, static-fueled entropy, as Hello Skinny shows that it’s possible to create something completely new even with the most universal ingredients.

Sleeparchive A Man Dies in the Street Pt.2

Regis and Function credit the first release from Sleeparchive (a.k.a. Roger Semsroth) as the inspiration around which Sandwell District formed. Released in 2004, Elephant Island has aged well, and its impact on Sandwell District’s 2010 album Feed-Forward is clear. Nearly a decade has passed since Semroth’s influential debut first surfaced, yet the man still hasn’t changed his template. This is his second offering from the A Man Dies in the Street series, EPs inspired by the Brassaï photographs of the same name, and it finds Semsroth so focused on pursuing the formal core of the Sleeparchive project that he doesn’t bother to invite listeners in. This is loop techno with no exit and minimal acknowledgement of anything outside of itself. Calling these tracks DJ tools sounds too social.

Listening to earlier Sleeparchive material in light of this EP’s intensity, songs like “Elephant Island” sound outrageously expressive. The tracks here—titled with the numerals 5 through 8—are airless. They’re all around four minutes long and sound as if they were cut out of longer sessions where, one might fantasize, a kick, bleep, or hi-hat would drop out every so often. It’s a flat enough listening experience to make Dettmann II seem humane, but its affect is closer to fellow Tresor affiliate Terrence Dixon. Both are fond of setting sounds in baleful, lopsided orbits, creating an almost medieval sense of space inside their tracks. Unfortunately though, the dour A Man Dies in the Street Pt.2 doesn’t bristle with Dixon’s abstract energy.

The Martinez Brothers Give Away New EP

Bronx-bred house duo The Martinez Brothers has apparently been dabbling in the world of hip-hop production as of late, electing to give away its first EP of such efforts, WARHOL*BASQUIAT, as a free download. Heavy on samples and chopped-up bits of refracted soul, The Martinez Brothers’ hip-hop stylings lean more to the Madlib side of the spectrum than, say, Lex Luger, keeping the EP jazzy at all times across its five stoned-out head-nodders. The EP also comes with some general news of the outfit’s plans for 2014, saying in the press release, “We have some big things coming up next year; we’re starting a new label, revealing our art projects, and releasing more hip-hop productions.” In the meantime, The Martinez Brothers’ WARHOL*BASQUIAT EP can be downloaded for free here.

Terrence Dixon to Release New LP

Veteran Detroit techno DJ/producer Terrence Dixon is just a year out from the release of his From the Far Future Pt. 2 LP for Berlin’s enduring Tresor label, but has actually spent that time issuing 12″s and EPs with a variety of imprints. And next month, the prolific artist will drop his latest full-length record, a 15-track offering called Badge of Honor. Arriving sometime in mid-December via UK label Surface, Dixon’s new album will be available as a vinyl-only release, and is said to feature loads of “deep, aquatic techno.” Badge of Honor can be pre-ordered here, and its artwork and tracklist can be found below.

West Norwood Cassette Library “Acid Jazz (Bonus Beats)”

The prolific and widely varied output of London producer Bob Bhamra (a.k.a. West Norwood Cassette Library, which also serves as the name of the man’s forward-thinking imprint) will add another notch to his belt early next month with the 8 Track Cartridge EP. Seeing a release via Hypercolour, the double-12″ effort gathers up eight tunes resurrected from the producer’s vaults, including “Acid Jazz,” the “Bonus Beats” version of which is offered here. Stripped of any melodic or overtly “musical” content, this version of the tune focuses on rhythms which churn with a steady four-on-the-floor and pop with some vintage-striped percussion—making this download a particularly useful tool for just about anyone’s DJ arsenal.

Watch Nguzunguzu’s Truly Epic New Video for “Mecha”

Towards the beginning of Nguzunguzu‘s brand-new music video for “Mecha,” a hyper-mechanized cut of grimy dancefloor music from the LA duo’s recent Skycell EP for Fade to Mind, the phrase “Original Film” flashes across the screen. It’s hard not to take the declaration as a sort of artistic commentary, seeing as how director Jude MC—who made the video in conjunction with MOCAtv—spends a large part of his piece splicing together clips from massive, blockbuster sci-fi and action films.

The creator explains his methods and intent in a press release, saying, “The mode of editing used is a new technique I am developing called ‘oversampling.’ With this video, I attempt to create an ‘action abstraction.’ A tamer version of this edit is released for viewing, a more abstract version is available upon request.” The “tamer version” Jude MC refers to features heavily edited footage from movies such as Event Horizon, Prometheus, Battleship, Pacific Rim, The Matrix, and Transformers, among many others, and can be seen below. More information regarding Jude MC’s video for “Mecha,” as well as stills and animated GIFs from the piece, can be found here.

Perc Readies Sophomore LP

London producer and Perc Trax label head Ali Wells (a.k.a. Perc) has announced the details of his sophomore LP ahead of its release early next year. Entitled The Power and The Glory, Perc’s forthcoming album is said to expand on the ideas presented on Wicker & Steel, his 2011 debut LP, with “rhythmic tracks [that] pulse with more energy and bite than ever before, whilst the [album ‘s] freeform tracks add a melodic and occasionally political edge to Perc’s already expansive repertoire.” No audio previews have surfaced yet for The Power and The Glory, but considering that the album is set to drop on February 17 of next year, there is plenty of time for Perc to tease bits of the record in the months ahead. In the meantime, the forthcoming LP’s artwork and tracklist are included below.

Download a New Mix from Juju & Jordash

As part of the ongoing Dimension mix series curated by Mexican label Static Discos, adventerous DJ/production pair Juju & Jordash has turned in a new, hour-long mix for free download. Taking just over 60 minutes to complete its run, Juju & Jordash’s installment for the series largely eschews the outfit’s usual dancefloor tendencies, instead leading a dark and constantly direction-changing audio voyage which pieces together bits of free jazz, brooding ambient compositions, off-kilter EBM, noisy dub, and many other selections from the more uncanny ends of electronic music.

The full mix can be downloaded via Static Discos, here (the download link is at the bottom of the text), where the other contributions to the series can also be downloaded for free. Furthermore, when the Dimension mix series posts its final mix from PAN affiliate Ben Vida on Sunday, November 24, the tracklist for all of the mixes—including the one from Juju & Jordash—will be revealed.

Evian Christ Teases Next EP for Tri Angle, Shares New Track

“Salt Carousel” is a brand-new track by hotly tipped UK producer Evian Christ which is said to be lifted from his as-yet-undetailed next EP for the excellent Tri Angle label. Brash and haunted, the new production continues to explore the Kanye West collaborator’s style of broken and blown-out hip-hop, adding in subtle touches of more Euro-centric electronic sounds. Evian Christ notes that his four-track Waterfall EP will drop in “early 2014,” nearly two years after he first appeared with Kings and Them, but a full stream of its “Salt Carousel” cut can be heard now, below. Jon Hopkins to Remix Moderat on Upcoming Single

Moderat has been unstoppable this year—unveiling its widely loved sophomore album, launching extensive tours, doing all kinds of features and interviews with the press, partnering with UNICEF for a music video with a message, and issuing record after record of remixes and singles. And apparently, the three German producers from Modeselektor and Apparat are in no mood to stop now, as they’ve just announced yet another single set to appear from II.

“Last Time” has up until now only been available on the limited, deluxe-CD edition of Moderat’s latest LP, but will drop for the first time on vinyl next year, along with an instrumental version, an alternate version, and one remix by none other than Jon Hopkins. That double-10″ single can be pre-ordered here before it’s made available on January 17 via Monkeytown, when a video for “Last Time” is also said to be arriving.
