Hodge “Resolve” b/w “Prototype Fear”

As one third of the Livity Sound production crew and imprint, Pev has already supplied enough dancefloor heat in 2013 to power a midsize city for a few days. Livity’s focus on raw, stripped machine funk has freed up Pev’s own Punch Drunk label to pursue other dub-driven tangents. Most recently, the imprint played host to a varied EP from Bass Clef, offering several remixes of his “Stenaline Metranil Solar Flare.” Earlier in the year, Pev linked up on Punch Drunk with fellow Bristolian, Hodge for yet another standout offering from the city’s scene: the “Bells (System Mix)” b/w “Bells (Dream Sequence)” 12″, which took the two producers down a decidedly dreamy and lush path. Now, Hodge has stepped out on his own with “Resolve” b/w “Prototype Fear,” his first solo release for the label. The sonics are distinctly familiar at this point, but this 12″ feels especially hungry.

Left to his own devices, Hodge favors a sound that retains the dislocated ambiance of “Bells” while attacking the rhythm even harder. “Resolve” suggests Basic Soul Unit’s deliberate approach to sonic space, if it was applied to the blast-furnace intensity of AnD’s tracks. There’s also a more direct techno influence on this 12″ than anything from Livity Sound, barring Asusu’s “Velez.” The extra detail Hodge makes a point of sticking in gives the track the kind of vertiginous momentum that Ancient Methods conveys so distinctly. “Prototype Fear” also impresses by adding just one extra layer of detail—a hoovering bassline that whips its bulk around restlessly. As soon as that bass starts sounding a little bored, a battery of drums encircles and lays into it like it owes them money. “Resolve” and “Prototype Fear” are tunes that work our brain with a ball-peen hammer, and as such, they’re two of the roughest and baddest tracks to come out of Bristol this year.

Download an Exclusive Disco and Acid Mix from DJ Pierre

Before his remix of Dosem‘s “Atica” appears on a forthcoming 12″ for the Halocyan label (out November 19), Chicagoan acid-house pioneer DJ Pierre is giving XLR8R readers his brand-new Disco Trax and Acid Snax mix to stream and download for free. As the selector himself puts it, the mix “features different genres and styles, from disco filter to techno and acid,” to which he adds, “I wanted to disregard any rules or expectations, and I just dove in. I wanted to touch [listeners] on both an emotional and mental level.” The 13-track set largely deals with uptempo, soul-flecked house, though a good deal of acid tweaks are thrown in for good measure, of course. DJ Pierre’s full mix—which touches on the aforementioned remix of “Atica” in its final minutes—can be streamed and downloaded via the player below.

Opal Tapes Launches New Vinyl-Dedicated Offshoot

Eclectic UK label Opal Tapes has announced the launching of Black Opal, a new offshoot of the imprint dedicated to vinyl releases, with its inaugural record set to land next month. Although Opal Tapes head Steven Bishop (a.k.a. Basic House) recently told Juno Plus that the label will focus on new material, its first release will actually revisit Opal Tapes’ summer release from Patricia, whose engrossing, textural Body Issues tape quickly sold out. Like all forthcoming releases on Black Opal, the Brooklyn-based producer’s record will come with complete packaging designed in collaboration with UK artist Savage Wolf. Patricia’s Body Issues LP will debut the label early next month, with future releases from HOLOVR, Yves De May, and Lumigraph set to appear in 2014. In the meantime, the digital version of Patricia’s tape can be streamed in full below. (via Resident Advisor)

Pawn “Hot Skull”

Los Angeles has seen a deluge of quality experimental hip-hop and dance producers in recent years, and in that anything-goes creative setting, LA native Pawn manages to mash up homegrown sounds with inspired flashes of footwork and jungle. It’s surprising that “Hot Skull”—a spastic cut with slight EDM touches featured on the upcoming Smog City 2 compilation—actually works, but the screeching breakdowns and ever-changing rhythms associated with that scene are put to good use here. Pawn’s latest cut doesn’t stay in one place for long; its skittering hi-hats and drum & bass breaks—along with a footwork-inspired, pushy vocal sample—are a little overwhelming, but “Hot Skull” never dumbs itself down or manipulates listeners into submission.

Video: Torn Hawk “Born to Win (Life After Ghostbusters)”

The artists on Ron Morelli’s L.I.E.S. imprint are known to explore their own paths, and this new visual from video artist Luke Wyatt’s Torn Hawk project is no exception. Over its 15-minute runtime, the sprawling “Born to Win (Life After Ghostbusters)” finds Wyatt splaying chorused guitar figures over a steady, motorik drum-machine beat that swells and crests lackadaisically. The video works within a similar motif, mashing together old VHS footage with low-resolution performance images and a random assortment of cultural ephemera. There might be some larger message hidden in the crinkled folds of “Born to Win (Life After Ghostbusters),” or perhaps Wyatt is just following his own driftless muse, wherever it takes him.

AIAIAI Introduces TMA-1 X Headphones

High-end headphone designer AIAIAI has introduced the TMA-1 X, a new product intended to serve as the company’s entry-level DJ headphone. While AIAIAI’s TMA-1 headphones have become increasingly popular with working jocks and producers, their substantial (but by no means astronomical) price range may have put them out of reach for some, and so the company has now attempted to bring the best of that design to tight-budget customers with the TMA-1 X. Smaller and lighter than its AIAIAI counterparts, the TMA-1 X is a closed, dynamic set of headphones, and is said to be suitable for “DJing, monitoring, and [using with] mobile devices.” The TMA-1 X will become available on November 28, retailing for around $129; the full specs can be found here, along with more pictures of the sleek new cans.

Hackman Announces New EP for Futureboogie

Following releases on Well Rounded, RAMP, and Greco-Roman, Bristolian DJ/producer Hackman has announced he’ll join UK label Futureboogie to release a new EP entitled Change My Life. The three-track effort finds Hackman zeroing in on a soulful take on bass music that puts powerful R&B vocals in the forefront, backed with crisp Rhodes melodies and forceful kicks. The Change My Life EP is due out on December 9 as a 12″, with the digital pacakge arriving on December 23, and its tracklist and artwork can be found below.

Robot Koch “Jupiter”

Berlin-based producer Robot Koch has always moved around the edges of genre, and with his upcoming Unpaved record, he intends to expand those margins. Working in collaboration with director Lukas Feigelfeld (who directed Robot Koch’s very own “Autodreams” video), Robot Koch made a short film inspired by the mytholgoical god Pan “in which the music and the images are equally important.” Though it didn’t make it onto Unpaved‘s forthcoming soundtrack release (arriving December 2 via Project: Mooncircle), the earthy and atmospheric “Jupiter” does nonetheless appear in the film. Tectonic sub wobbles shift underneath harp sounds, as the track inhales and exhales the vinyl crackle which engulfs the quick-tempoed cymbals and melodic core. Slowly unraveling over the course of its five-minute runtime, Robot Koch’s bubbling “Jupiter” feels massive.
