Podcast 318: Special Request

It’s not often that an already successful artist comes up with a new alias and sees their career trajectory suddenly jump to another level, but that’s exactly what seems to have happened to Paul Woolford. For more than a decade, the UK producer has been releasing a steady stream of well-received music, both under his own name and a variety of monikers, including Bobby Peru, Hip Therapist, and Skip Donahue. Still, at the start of 2012, he was still generally known as Paul Woolford, respectable and reliable techno producer. It wasn’t until he began making hardcore- and jungle-referencing music as Special Request that things started to change. Initially issuing a series of white-label 12″s, the project was eventually snapped up by the young Houndstooth, which has just released the first Special Request LP, Soul Music. Coming at a time when nostalgia for the pirate-radio era and a renewed interest in jungle and drum & bass appears to be surging, Special Request has quite simply exploded, placing Woolford on a bigger stage than ever before. Given that, it seemed like the perfect time for the veteran producer to put together an exclusive mix for the XLR8R podcast series. To be clear, this is most definitely a Special Request—and not a Paul Woolford—podcast; right off the bat, it delves into the breakneck rhythms of jungle and keeps the throttle floored for more than an hour. Bringing together both vintage cuts and newer productions, Woolford makes a compelling case for the genre’s vibrancy before wrapping things up with a noisy bit of sonic exploration from Alva Noto. He’s clearly tapped into something potent with Special Request, and it’s fascinating to document his ascent.

Gladkill “What Goes On”

Boris Gladkill (a.k.a. Gladkill) is an artist originally from Siberia who now resides primarily in California. The budding tunesmith plays with a palette that pulls from deep house, hip-hop, and unorthodox beat music, all of it retaining a hallmark, wispy synth polish. On “What Goes On,” taken from the man’s forthcoming free EP of the same name (out on November 5 via the producer’s Bandcamp), Gladkill thinks in current club paradigms while focusing his synth talent to a fine point. By granting the pitched-up vocals and resounding percussion of “What Goes On” ample space to breathe, Gladkill’s layers of confectionery synths are all the more seductive.

Watch Mouse on Mars Build a Beat in 10 Minutes

Beginning with the strum of a banjo—yes, a banjo—and an iPhone app, veteran production duo Mouse on Mars takes on the challenge of building a beat in just 10 minutes, a task that proves all the more fun to watch given the pair does so while operating the many controls and sonic toys found in its immaculate studio space. But the banjo and iPhone are just the first building blocks for the duo of sonic experimentalists as they try their luck with FACT TV‘s Against the Clock challenge, looking to a number of softsynths, outboard FX, and even the voice of one camera operator to build the skeleton of a track. Though the two producers mostly speak to each other in German, it is still relatively easy to get the hang of what they are doing in the moment, and watching Andi Toma and Jan St. Werner frantically manipulate and run around their giant analog mixing desk just makes it all the more interesting. The full video can be watched below.

Jon Convex to Release New EP with Ore and dBridge Remixes

Born David Kirkham and formerly half of Instra:mental, Jon Convex has announced that he’ll soon release a new EP via Civil Music. According to a press release, the four-track Losing Time record will find Kirkham working “somewhere between the stripped-down, electro-flavoured rhythms that powered the final Instra:mental album, Resolution 653, and muscular, warehouse-flavoured techno.” Two remixes of the track “TX”—including a version produced by drum & bass stalwart dBridge—will be paired with two original tunes by Jon Convex on his EP, all of which is set to drop on November 25. Before then, Losing Time‘s artwork and tracklist can be found below.

01 Losing Time
02 TX
03 TX (Ore Remix)
04 TX (dBridge Remix)

Video Premiere: Black Devil Disco Club “Bee Boop”

The re-emergence of Parisian artist Bernad Fevre (a.k.a. Black Devil Disco Club) was a welcome surprise, as the veteran producer’s refined ability to inject dark, driving house tunes with a playful touch has been missed for quite some time. The new video for “Bee Boop,” a track taken from the man’s upcoming Black Moon White Sun LP (set for release on October 28), manages to capture a similar feeling, combining an array of psychedelic imagery that hints at something much more sinister underneath its surface. Director Antonis Katsoris uses a tapestry of non-sequitur symbols—a floating horse head, a colorful spaceship control center, modular synthesizers, and modern cityscapes—to not only disorient the viewer, but to mirror the dichotomy at play in Black Devil Disco Club’s foreboding yet whimsical “Bee Boop.”

Stream New Records from Laurel Halo and Peter Van Hoesen

With Laurel Halo‘s (pictured above) sophomore LP for Hyperdub and Peter Van Hoesen‘s hour-long live album for Tresor (an imprint we recently profiled as part of our Labels We Love week) set to drop very soon, both records have now been made available to stream in full before seeing their official releases.

The nine-track Chance of Rain album will serve as Brooklyn producer Laurel Halo’s second full-length for Kode9’s Hyperdub imprint, and has been described as “a cerebral exploration of the intersection between rhythmic and ambient music, drawing together ideas of movement and stillness, psychedelia, and presence of mind.” Now, we can have a much better idea of what that all means with the forthcoming effort streaming in full over on Pitchfork Advance before it hits physical and digtial music outlets on October 28.

Recorded as a live performance at Berlin’s Tresor club back in July of this year, Peter Van Hoesen’s Life Performance LP presents 60 minutes of new material made using the producer’s hardware-focused arsenal of live gear and incorporating many instances of in-the-moment improvisation. Before Life Performance drops next month via Tresor, the 14-track endeavor can be heard in its entirety via Resident Advisor.

Recondite, Vatican Shadow, and More Remix Function on New EP

After allowing the air to clear around his long-awaited debut record Incubation, Berlin-based DJ/producer and Sandwell District founder Function is set to release a new EP of remixes via the Ostgut Ton label. Remixing artists Vatican Shadow (pictured above), Rrose, Recondite, and NSI were enlisted to retool four differnet tracks from Incubation, carrying on the album’s bleak underground aesthetic while also infusing the music with their own dancefloor sounds. The Function Remixes EP is due out on November 23, but until then, its artwork and tracklist can be found below.

A Against The Wall (Rrose Remix)
B Psychic Warfare (Vatican Shadow Remix)
C Incubation (Ritual) (Recondite Remix)
D Inter (NSI Remix)

Huxley Readies Fall US Tour

UK garage/house hybridist Huxley has had a pretty solid year—releasing his Bellywedge EP and Lost Love EP in the first half, and collaborating with London’s Shenoda a month ago, around the same time he dropped his exclusive XLR8Rpodcast. Now, the artist born Michael Dodman is gearing up for a short touring stint in the US. Starting in Detroit tomorrow, Huxley will traipse from the East Coast to the West Coast before concluding in Miami on November 2. The full list of dates is available to view below.

Single Point Edge “Aporia”

Dutch label Rwina hasn’t dabbled much in techno, but they are dipping their toes in frigid waters with an upcoming release from mysterious producer Single Point Edge. “Aporia,” a track sourced from the artist’s eponymous album (due out October 28) offers a steely techno beat held together by a rapid synth arpeggios and moody atmospherics that slowly swell around the song’s borders. The entrance of an ominous ride cymbal and rapid-fire handclaps reveal an enhanced attention to detail to the minimalistic bearings and rough sounds which mark the track. As a result, “Aporia” is an impressive cross-section of melody and force, and ultimately, a track that bodes well for Single Point Edge’s future.
