Brrd Towers/Anointing EP

When a slinky beat by a producer named Brrd (a.k.a. Stuart Bird) appeared on FaltyDL‘s High Five list earlier this year, we certainly nodded our heads along a few times, but we didn’t pay it much more mind than that. Now, we have the chance to see a wider scope of Brrd’s abilities with the Towers/Anointing EP, the inaugural release for FaltyDL’s new Blueberry imprint, and a record that positions the budding talent as a refreshing voice within the world of stoney, jazz-flecked beats.

Though he is without question a beatmaker, judging by the sound of the Towers/Anointing EP, it would seem that the artist does not care much about keeping up with the current trends of the “beat scene.” Existing somewhere between the warm, jazz-flecked musings of Shigeto and the stoney sample pastiches of Knxwledge, Brrd sounds like he became uninterested with the evolution of “beat music” around the time that space-age FX, trap-indebted drums, and contemporary hip-hop became the tools of choice for beatmakers following in the footsteps of Brainfeeder and the like. Still, Brrd is not exactly forging new territory all for himself, but his allegiance appears to fall closer to Madlib than it does Flying Lotus.

Though it is touted as an EP, Towers/Anointing offers a total of 13 tracks; to be fair though, eight of them do clock in under the two-minute mark. A few tunes stick out from the pack, with “SCOCJ” offering a bass-heavy, low-slung slide through atmospheric jazz, while “Freezetag” is reminiscent of Peanut Butter Wolf’s classic Peanut Butter Breaks 12″ and “fuck bon jovi (slf)” appears as a sinister take on the bell-centric sound of Teebs. The record’s second half locks in on a formula, with “The Anointing” crafting a simple groove with sampled piano notes, a straight-ahead kick-and-rim pattern, and playfully repitched R&B vocals floating on top. It’s not exactly rocket science, but Brrd makes it work well. The only problem is that he then repeats this basic idea six more times on the record’s b-side. While all the tracks are admittedly short and decent enough—”erase my future” and “satan” are especially nice—if one or two of the selections had been dropped, perhaps the others’ impact could have been more lasting.

Still, its few shortcomings aside, Towers/Anointing is a quality effort and, furthermore, an extremely interesting note for FaltyDL to start his label on. In the end, Brrd has crafted an EP of beats that is everything it needs to be—full of soul, steeped in interesting and varied textures, and unrolled at an inviting pace. Where Blueberry goes from here is anyone’s guess.

Bubblin’ Up LA beatmaker D33J issued his first official release, the Tide Songs EP, earlier this year, and is already set to follow up that record with another EP for California label Anticon. Set to drop on October 15, the four-track Gravel is described as “the soundtrack to sleepless nights spent ruminating on both right and wrong decisions,” and is preceded by a stream of “Slow (feat. Kreyola),” an atmospheric and slow-grooving tune littered with warped vocal bits. D33J will be on a North American tour with Mount Kimbie and Jonwayne leading up to the release of his second EP, the dates of which can be found below, along with Gravel‘s tracklist and lead single.

Video Premiere: H.O.S.H. “Dancer”

Veteran Hamburg DJ/producer H.O.S.H. (a.k.a. Holger Behn) has played an integral part in the continued success and growth of club-centric label Diynamic, thanks in a large part to his interest in the art of longform DJ sets. When focusing on production, however, Behn’s vast historical knowledge allows him to focus in on key details while keeping his arrangements efficient. “Dancer” is a fine example of that ethos, in which a clean house beat is paired with shimmering synth phrases. The video, however, takes a playful approaching to the visuals, as it follows the growth of a young girl who dreams of being a dancer. Its implicit naivety draws out the longing from within H.O.S.H’s careful production of “Dancer.”

Jensen Sportag “Under the Rose”

The debut full-length from the nostalgically inclined Nashville duo Jensen Sportag is officially on its way, and while we first got word of the pair’s Stealth of Days LP for Cascine when its “Bellz” tune popped up back in July, we now have all of the record’s juicy details. Artists Austin Wilkinson and Elvis Craig have also offered another free track from their debut long-player, further enticing listeners with “Under the Rose,” a cut which shows off Jensen Sportag’s smoother side. Dreamy chords and, of course, a touch of slap bass fill out the R&B-flecked piece of electronic pop, which will drop along with the rest of Stealth of Days on November 12. Before then, the artwork and tracklist for Jensen Sportag’s upcoming album can be perused after the jump.

Ben Klock, Omar S, Ben UFO, Todd Terje, and More to Play Dekmantel Showcases at ADE

With Amsterdam Dance Event—the annual Dutch celebration of all things dance music—less than a month away, the Dekmantel crew has unveiled its impressive set of showcases for the festival. Covering four nights (October 17 – 20), Dekmantel’s showcases will feature talent from all over the world. The L.I.E.S. crew (Ron Morelli, Steve Summers, and Delroy Edwards) representing the US alongside Moodyman, Omar S, and Anthony Naples, while the Hessle Audio crew (Pangaea, Ben UFO, and Pearson Sound), Midland, and Bicep are set to bring their distinct UK flavors to Amsterdam. Dekmantel’s closing party will focus on Berlin and Ostgut Ton, bringing out Ben Klock pictured above), Marcel Dettman, Marcel Fengler, Function, Luke Slater, and others from the label’s roster to make the festival’s final day a memorable one. The lineup for all four of Dekmantel’s upcoming Amsterdam Dance Event nights can be perused on the flier below, and if the hometown crew’s series of showcases is anywhere near as well done as its recent festival, these four nights are likley to be some of the best parties at ADE.

Breach Curates Upcoming ‘DJ-Kicks’ Mix Album

Following the recent announcement of John Talabot’s upcoming entry into the DJ-Kicks mix series, the !K7 label has announced that UK producer Ben Westbeech (a.k.a. Breach) will follow soon after with his own installment. The chart domination of Westbeech’s spritely “Jack” single has kept him on a steady stream of DJ gigs around the world, but he nonetheless found time to put together this mix after a recent move to Amsterdam, which allowed him to delve deeper into the city’s many record stores. Said to focus on Breach’s “underground” side, his edition of DJ-Kicks features deep cuts from the likes of Detroit legends Inner City, Dusky, Dopplereffekt, Amsterdam duo Beesmunt Soundsystem, Iron Galaxy, Detroit Swindle, Redinho, and Fred P, as well as an exclusive, unreleased tune from Westbeech. The tracklist and artwork for Breach’s DJ-Kicks mix can be viewed below, before it’s issued on November 12.

Four Tet Gives Away ‘Late Night Tales’ Mix

As the story goes, after learning that his 2004 Late Night Tales mix had recently been reissued as a remastered “collectors edition,” a frustrated Four Tet—who claims to have had no involvement with the new release—decided to simply give away the entire mix himself. “[The] reissue of my Late Night Tales mix they are doing has nothing to do with me… they never told me about it and [I have] not heard the remaster,” the London producer said on Twitter today, soon following his statements with links to download the entire 2004 mix and his cover of Jimi Hendrix’s “Castles in the Sand”—which appears as part of Four Tet’s Late Night Tales—for free. Who knows how long these will last, but for now, the mix album can be downloaded here and the Hendrix cover can be grabbed here. Turning an understandable frustration with a record label overstepping its bounds into an opportunity to give his fans free music—just another reason to love Four Tet.

Video: Matias Aguayo “El Sucu Tucu”

Chilean-born, Berlin-based DJ/producer Matias Aguayo released The Visitor, his third full-length record, earlier this year, subsequently taking his playful, vocal-driven techno on the road, a process he detailed in full in our recent From Studio to Stage feature. Now, to celebrate a recent slew of high-profile shows—including his Japanese debut this week—Aguayo has shared a new video for “El Sucu Tucu,” a particularly buoyant cut from his latest LP. The video for the track—which was also included on the Soulwax FM station in the just-released Grand Theft Auto V—finds the artist peering cautiously through an array of jungle brush as his own chanting vocals are pushed forward by a steady, driving pulse. The bright colors and sweltering cuts of the visuals echo the tropical, blood-stirring arrangement of “El Sucu Tucu,” reminding us Aguayo’s range and bold eclecticism.

Motor City Drum Ensemble and Zomby Remix Darkstar on Upcoming EPs; Stream MCDE’s Rework Now

Seven months after its News From Nowhere album for Warp arrived, London trio Darkstar has revealed plans to follow that release with a pair of remix EPs featuring new productions by the band itself, German house kingpin Motor City Drum Ensemble (pictured above), and the always unpredictable Zomby. The first EP, entitled 01484, will offer Darkstar’s own reimagining of News From Nowhere tracks “Young Hearts” and “Armonica,” while Motor City Drum Ensemble remixes the record’s piano-led slow jam “A Day’s Pay For A Day’s Work.” Though no exact release date or tracklist has been shared for it at this point, the second remix EP, HD7, will again feature Darkstar remixing themselves, in addition to Zomby’s take on one of the album’s tracks. For now, the complete info for the 01484 (which is slated to drop on October 15) can be found below, along with a stream of MCDE’s remix.

Download a New Remix from Shlohmo

Restless LA beatmaker Shlohmo (a.ka. Henry Laufer) has been in collaboration mode as of late—recent tracks with Jeremih and How to Dress Well have seen Laufer stepping outside the boundaries of his own solo productions to work with more vocal-centric material. Continuing in a similar vein, Shlohmo has just shared a remix for “She” by UK soul singer Laura Mvula. Laufer twists Mvula’s gorgeous, plaintive ballad into something sinewy and nocturnal, which is a far cry from the dancefloor-ready remix of the same song that Canadian producer Hissy Fit delivered to us early last month. “She (Shlohmo Remix)” can be streamed and downloaded below.
