Maceo Plex Sweating Tears EP

Perhaps better known for the sparse and inhuman minimal techno of his Maetrik project, Eric Estornel has nonetheless done a lot towards re-inventing himself under the name of Maceo Plex. Standing in contrast to earlier forays, his new moniker explores the moody and tightly wound world of vocal tech-house. Sweating Tears, his latest EP, continues in a vein similar to his last four releases, but offers mixed results.

Maceo Plex’s record kicks off with the anthemic “Can’t Leave You,” an uncharacteristically uplifting track that combines a freestyle bassline with gated ’80s drum sounds and an insistent guitar riff that brings to mind the likes of Chic. Over that infectious instrumental production, Estornel layers vocals that are a dead-ringer for mid-’80s Italo, complete with all the cheesy swagger that entails. It’s essentially a piece of dancefloor candy, a tune you may enjoy getting down to, but one with a distinct lack of substance. Still, it will undoubtedly get a lot of play in club settings, even if it doesn’t have the same depth that defined Maceo Plex’s previous singles for Crosstown Rebels, “Vibe Your Love” and “Your Style.”

“Stop Your Hate,” the second cut on the EP, fares a bit worse. Built on a moody, handclap-led disco rhythm, the track moves into deeper territory with techy synth sweeps and diving synth-bass. Yet while it contains a more compelling instrumental arrangement, the song is marred by a ridiculous spoken-word diatribe against the artist’s critics. It’s a shame, too, because the song would have been a lot better without him repeatedly chanting, “Don’t hate,” and, “Learn from this.”

The EP’s highlight comes in the form of Berlin-based duo Tale of Us‘ remix of “Can’t Leave You.” Taking the original’s giddy nouveau disco and plunging it into a dense moodiness, the pair’s remix provides all the hallmarks of a deep cut. Gone is the disco-like exuberance, and in its stead we’re given undulating digital bass, massive amounts of reverb, and ominous atmospheric drones on “Can’t Leave You (Tale of Us Remix).” Small motifs from the original are slowly teased in and out of the mix with an almost dub-like zeal, and help make a track that will undoubtedly play a role in the crates of early-morning DJs for at least the next year or so.

Sahy Uhns “Anticipation of the Night”

Before Southern California producer and Proximal label head Carl Madison Burgin (a.k.a. Sahy Uhns) drops his debut LP, the haughtily titled An Intolerant Disdain of Underlings (pictured above), on October 18, we’re treated to an example of the kinds of hard-edged, boom-bap-addled electronic productions available therein. “Anticipation of the Night,” which is named after a 1958 film by Stan Brakhage, is a gritty, twisted track that seems unable to stay in one place for longer than a handful of seconds. Thankfully, each new direction Sahy Uhns takes us in is as tantalizing as the one that came before it.

Video: Mount Kimbie “Carbonated”

The longevity of relevance Mount Kimbie‘s Crooks and Lovers LP has enjoyed speaks volumes about the work of the UK duo. But after a slew of non-stop international performances in support of the album over the last year, the pair is ready to at last say farewell to their heralded debut full-length with one last video. Tapping frequent visual collaborator Tyrone Lebon (who has been responsible for all the group’s press shots, artwork, and music videos) again, the “Carbonated” video follows a few young club-goers, examining the experiences they have during the heat of the dance party, before it all happens, and after, as well. Lebon describes it as, “Unique solitary moments of the night, like walking home alone and noticing little details of the city or even whilst still on the dancefloor.” Hopefully, a “farewell” to Crooks and Lovers means some new jams from Mount Kimbie are in the works, but for those who need their post-dubstep fix sooner, the duo recently stopped by the Daytrotter studios to perform four songs, which you can check out below.

The Juan MacLean “Everybody Get Close”

Word has it that DFA stalwart The Juan MacLean will soon release a digital-only compilation of b-sides, remixes, and rarities called Everybody Get Close on November 8 via the aforementioned label. Along with said news came this funky, vocoder-led tune from the disco and house patron, which oddly enough sounds unlike anything we’ve heard from the NYC artist before. Rasmus Folk “Sylvia Kristel”

Definitely one of the stranger music projects to hit the scene in recent years, London’s Endless House Foundation presents not only damn good retro-tinged electro-acoustic music, but also an entire Ballardian narrative about an eccentric millionaire and his doomed five-story nightclub. Now, the Foundation is back with The Folk/Scnhnaffs EP a six-track split release from two of its most notorious producers, Rasmus Folk and Walter Schnaffs. From that record we have “Sylvia Kristel,” a dark and muddy ode to Folk’s one-time affair with Dutch soft-core porn actress Sylvia Kristel. Bathed in the warm hiss of analog tape, the track moves with a motorik lurch through a ghostly forest of emotive synth leads, rising bass tones, and bizarre vocals. Look for The Folk/Scnhnaffs EP when it drops in late September.
