Planet Mu To Release Debut LP From Kuedo

Kuedo (the solo moniker of Jamie Teasdale, formerly of the duo Vex’d) will release his debut full-length on the London label which seems to never sleep, Planet Mu. Severant, which is slated to hit the streets October 17, is said to find the now-Berlin-based artist exploring a futurist theme via his introspective productions, incorporating touches of modern UK bass, the ambient synthscapes of Vangelis and Tangerine Dream, and the rhythmic influences of juke and “coke rap” to yield a diverse sonic offering. Fortunately, to make sense of what that all means, Planet Mu has provided a streaming preview with snippets of all 14 of the LP’s tracks, which you can listen to here after peeping the artwork and tracklist below.

Canblaster and Sam Tiba “Delphes (Wafa Re Rubber Edit)”

London producer Wafa (who has previously released music on Grizzly and also moonlights as the drummer for Basement Jaxx) has spun this hyperactive tune from burgeoning Frenchmen Canblaster (pictured above) and Sam Tiba into an even more bombastic floor burner. The original “Delphes,” which comes from Canblaster’s recent Totem EP for the Marble imprint, sees its percussive edges sharpened and its glistening web of futuristic club sounds condensed into a three-plus minute whirlwind of sirens, spaceship lift-offs, and irresistible drum programming. Legend has it that this edit came in just a bit too late to find its way onto the initial release of the Totem EP, so we should all count ourselves lucky that the good folks over at Marble (that is Surkin, Bobmo, and Para One) are a generous bunch and still decided to float this little gem into the world for our listening pleasure anyway.

Red Bull Music Academy Embarks on World Tour

With the Red Bull Music Academy’s 2011 edition set to descend on Madrid in a little over a month, the RBMA posse is in the midst of a worldwide tour of panels, workshops, studio sessions, and parties highlighting the music scenes of 10 cities from around the globe. Having already visited Cape Town, South Africa and currently wrapping up three days of events in Berlin, the tour has a one-day stop in Paris this weekend before heading across the Atlantic for a lengthy string of special events to take place in the US’ most renowned city for electronic music—Detroit. The six-day tour stop, which RBMA is calling Motor City Frequencies, gets underway on Monday, September 12, and is set to include workshops with legendary Detroit producers such as Theo Parrish, Carl Craig, Juan Atkins, Dabrye, and more, as well as what should prove to be an amazing club night with the fabled Three Chairs project (consisting of key members Rick Wilhite, Kenny Dixon Jr., and Theo Parrish). Even better, all the events are FREE. You can get the full details as to what RBMA’s Detroit adventure will entail here.

As for the rest of the globe, go here to check out the organization’s continent-hopping plans, which will take the team to Toronto, Melbourne, New York, Rome, Sao Paulo, and London over the next month and a half. Also, stay tuned to the XLR8R website in the weeks ahead, as we’ll be running an exclusive video series with footage from each of the 10 RBMA tour stops.

Stream the New Hemlock Single from Nautiluss x Lord Skywave

Later this month, Untold’s Hemlock Recordings label will be expanding its artist roster to another continent, thanks to new Canadian signee Nautiluss (a.k.a. Graham Douglas Bertie), who has teamed up with London-based vocalist Lord Skywave (a.k.a. Simon Lord) on the imprint’s latest single. “Ultraviolet” b/w “Bleu Monday” is scheduled to drop on September 26, but both tracks are streaming in their entirety, below. Nautiluss and Lord Skywave bring a lot of experience to the table, as the former previously crafted beats as one-half of Thunderheist and Bassanovva, while the latter lent his pipes to groups such as Simian and the Black Ghosts. The duo’s avant-pop collaboration on “Ultraviolet” is definitely a new direction for Hemlock, although the Nautiluss solo outing on the b-side, “Bleu Monday,” offers the deep bass, clacking percussion, and wistful melodies one would expect from the label. Listen for yourself, and take a second to look at the single artwork, which has also been posted below.

Vincenzo “Tasmania”

Today, the Hamburg-based Hafendisko imprint is releasing the first edition of Hamburg Elektronisch (artwork above), a 20-track compilation gathering tunes from an impressive list of producers who call Hamburg their home, including the likes of DJ Koze, Tensnake, Isolée, and Lawrence among others. To help spread the word, they’ve offered Vincenzo‘s contribution to the release, “Tasmania,” a contemplative piece which serves as the collection’s closing track. Existing in the more heavenly regions of deep house, the song moves at an easy pace, letting the simple beat act as the steady bed for which any number of distant (and often reversed) string-like pads can pile on top of. The results are lush, trance-inducing, and in the right circumstances (we’re thinking late-night/early-morning sets), especially danceable.

The Field Looping State of Mind

Hypnotic, mesmerizing, entrancing, spell-binding… All words wildly growing in popularity to describe a large number of buzz-addled genres and artists as of late. It would seem that the loop is finally having its day in the sun; tastemakers across the board, as well as an increasing portion of the music-hungry public, have learned to accept and enjoy artful repetition and the musical styles that utilize its power. Longtime lovers of dance and electronic music may very well be skeptical of this potentially dubious trend, but DJs and producers around the world are no doubt pleased that their work is finally reaching a wider and more welcoming audience than ever before. So, what better time than now for one of this generation’s foremost authorities on the art of the loop, Swedish-born producer Axel Willner (a.k.a. The Field), to release a new record built around the transportive nature of micro-samples, techno, and ambient music—and call it Looping State of Mind, no less.

After a number of less-than-lovable moments populated 2009’s Yesterday and Today, some may view Willner’s latest LP as a return to form, as he makes deft use of enveloping soundscapes and overpowering grooves similar to those that made his debut record, From Here We Go Sublime, so, well, sublime. The notion isn’t exactly incorrect, but, to put it more accurately, Looping State of Mind is both an homage to The Field’s early work as well as a leap forward for his sound. The live instrumentation—comprised of mostly bass and drums—that was first experimented with in 2009 has been honed to a point of near perfection on cuts like “It’s Up There,” “Burned Out,” and the centerpiece title track. Basslines jump, skip, and repeat to no end underneath the swirling milieu of audio fragments, tethering each of the tunes’ subtle nuances to a melodic anchor, albeit an anchor that shifts ever so slightly with the flow of the music. And the drums? Well, their driving rhythms seem to exist as yet another layer in the dense orchestration of these compositions. The beats are certainly locomotive, but more often than not sound like a tool used to accent the qualities of the main attraction, Willner’s handcrafted loops.

Despite the wealth of propulsive power and, yes, hypnotic energy available on Looping State of Mind, it’s the relatively drifty and deeply emotional “Then It’s White” that ultimately steals the show. On it, The Field masterfully harnesses his ability to apply 10 seconds of sound—in this case, a gorgeous piano melody wrapped in disembodied vocal coos—across lengthy songs, resulting in transformative effects far greater than the sum of their parts. It’s music like this that speaks volumes for the power of the loop. Somewhere within these selected clips of audio lie musical and maybe even spiritual qualities that can be extracted through proper applications by knowledgeable hands. Two of those hands definitely belong to The Field, and Looping State of Mind might just be the finest document of his craft yet.

Kahn Readies Second 12″ For Punch Drunk

After dropping his Punch Drunk debut (“We Used To” b/w “Helter Skelter”) earlier this year, low end-obsessed Brtisol resident Kahn returns to the label with two new tracks of heavy, brooding bass. The forthcoming 12″ includes a pair of tracks, each showcasing a quite different aspect of Kahn’s production. A-side “Illy” is a synth-heavy outing complete with ascending arpeggios and layers of vocoded voice, while b-side “Tehran” serves as a stripped-back exercise in which a chopped Middle Eastern sample moves in tandem with a punishing rhythm. Of course, the thread that holds them all together is Kahn’s knack for impeccably crafted, step-worthy drum patterns, and—let us not forget—healthy amounts of rumbling bass. The “Illy” b/w “Tehran” single won’t see a release until October 17, but for now you can stream clips of both sides and check the artwork below.

Visionist “Sodium”

This slice of syrupy, underground bass comes from burgeoning Londoner Visionist, whose track “Sodium” is spearheading the latest release (artwork above) from Liminal Sounds, the only label/club night we know of that puts out an EP with tracks from its slated performers before every show. So then it should come as no surprise that this basement-vibes head-nodder comes along with the news that Visionist will be performing along with the likes of Damu, Venice Calypso, and many more at the next Liminal Sounds party, slated to take place in London a week from today on Friday, September 16 (full details here). And, just to make the whole sentiment that much sweeter, the good people at the imprint/club night have offered this tune and its three accompanying remixes for free via the download link found here.

Stream a New Track From Ikonika

After hitting us with an excellent remix of Samo Sound Boy’s “Shuffle Code” last week, Ikonika has yet another helping of bubbling bass goodness to share in the form of a new original tune, “Fleas.” The track hails from Ikonika’s forthcoming collaborative 12″ with fellow UK producers Om Unit and Monky for the Manchester club night/label Hoya:Hoya. You can stream Ikonika’s contribution below (where you’ll also find the accompanying artwork), and be on the lookout for the 12″ which drops next week, September 12, on vinyl and the following week in digital format.
