Watch Lemonade in the Studio with Yours Truly

During a recent visit to their old San Francisco stomping grounds, the members of Brooklyn trio Lemonade sat down in the studio with the Yours Truly gang, played a new song called “Neptune,” and discussed some of the things they love about the city they left a few years back. The well-shot clip is part of a series entitled The Neighborhood, and is for some reason labeled “SOMA,” even though it appears to be mostly, if not entirely, shot in the Mission. (Yes, we’re dropping some neighborhood pride/San Francisco hometown dorkery right now.) (via FADER)

Download Trouble & Bass’ Five-Year Mega Mix

New York’s Trouble & Bass imprint crew is in the midst of celebrating its fifth year in existence and has put together a massive mix of “all time T&B classics” to celebrate. As one would imagine, the 75-plus-minute endeavor is equal parts both “trouble” and “bass,” with virtually all the artists from the T&B crew present and past as well as the imprint’s extended family being represented in one form or another. You can listen to/download the immensely heavy, genre-hopping mix below, and check out the full tracklist, which is just way too long to post, here. As should be expected, the T&B crew has also planned a massive party to mark the occasion, with Drop the Lime, Star Eyes, AC Slater, the Captain, and special guest Plastician set to descend on Webster Hall next Friday, September 16 (full details can be found here).

Pole Returns with New 12″, Starts New Label

Legendary dub producer and mastermind behind the now-dormant ~scape imprint, Pole, has announced the release of a new 12″ entitled Waldgeschichten. The three-track endeavor, which we’re told has “bass and space” at its heart, marks Pole’s first release in almost four years, and comes with the news that the German artist has plans to release his own classics (such as the seminal 1, 2, and 3 albums), as well as a slew of forthcoming material on a newly founded imprint to be known simply as Pole. Waldgeschichten will see a release on October 4, kicking off a series of releases that will eventually be concluded by a full-length from the producer/mastering engineer/label head himself sometime in 2012. You can check the artwork and listen to snippets of the three tracks which comprise the 12″ below.

Video: The Making of Apparat’s ‘The Devil’s Walk’ Part One

As you may already know (seeing as how we’ve pointed it out many times over), German artist Sascha Ring (a.k.a. Apparat) has a new album coming soon via Mute. Now, we’re given a special look into the creation of The Devil’s Walk with this short behind-the-scenes film. Ring and his musical conspirators discuss their escape to the sunny environs of Mexico during Berlin’s and Chicago’s wintertime, how the place influenced the creation of their forthcoming LP, and what the exact ratio of time spent “working” to time spent “cigarette smoking” was. We’ll be looking forward to catching part two.

Listen to Toddla T’s Exclusive Rdio Playlist

Social music service Rdio had its first birthday just last month, and we’ve decided to help them to continue celebrating throughout September with a series of exclusive playlists from some of our favorite artists. For our first go around, we’ve got fun-loving UK party starter Toddla T. The DJ/producer pulled together a 10-track mix for us just prior to the release of his sophomore LP, Watch Me Dance, which drops next week via Ninja Tune. Check out Toddla T’s picks, along with a quick Q&A, below. (You can also stream the music on Rdio, here.)

XLR8R: Tell us a little about your playlist.
Toddla T: I’ve picked tracks that represent the past, present, and future! Some classics in there, as well as some brand new stuff, but all equally exciting.

What’s one of your favorites that you picked out?
Adonis “No Way Back.” This tune is way before my time of clubbing, but it’s probably a tune I’ll never get sick of. It’s so simple, but sounds so right. Less is more!

Your second album, Watch Me Dance, is coming out soon via Ninja Tune. What changes can people expect compared to Skanky Skanky?
The easiest way to put it, it’s a lot more musical! I felt a lot more confident in exploring music styles that I wasn’t [confident with] on the first, like R&B, pop, soul, authentic reggae. I guess you could say it’s more ‘mature.’

We’ve really enjoyed your “Take It Back” single since it first surfaced. Did pirate radio play a big part in your musical upbringing?
Yes, I think it did with everyone in the UK, even if it wasn’t a direct effect. Before digital radio/internet, it was the only way we could hear certain music. My local pirate was called SCR, Sheffield Community Radio. I used to ring in every Thursday on the hip-hop show, and give shout outs. I later found out it was broadcasted from the bottom of my road.

What’s on the horizon for Toddla T?
A U.S. tour!

DJAO “Taigamoss”

Seattle resident Alex Osuch (a.k.a. DJAO) is the latest budding producer to contribute a release to Dropping Gems’ growing discography. For his EP, Wuhn (artwork above), the Northwesterner presents five tracks of woozy, textural beat work, including this cut which marks the halfway point of the tender endeavor. Twisting and turning around a stuttering beat, Osuch lays down gentle layers of looped vocals which, when amassed together, flow with ease, creating a lush, ever-present drone throughout. A barrage of glitched wind chimes and microscopic, water-like splashes appear in the tune’s uppermost regions, blurring the line between melody and percussion as the elements move in and out of focus within the blink of an eye. Like all releases from the Dropping Gems camp, the lovely EP which houses “Taigamoss” can be had for a “pay-what-you-want” price over on the label’s Bandcamp page.

Teeth Swarm/Shift/Sequence/Spawn EP

Earlier this year, Finnish producer Teeth dropped “Shawty,” a song that, even before its actual release, was widely tabbed as one of those tunes. You know, those ultra-hyped songs that get message-board fanboys all hot and bothered and prompt desperate DJs to begin offering their first-born sons in exchange for an advance promo. It didn’t help that “Shawty” was being released via Oneman‘s tastemaker-worshipped 502 Recordings label, either. That said, the sultry and slow-burning “Shawty” undeniably was a big tune, and following up big tunes, even months or several releases later, is no easy task.

In fairness, Teeth followed “Shawty” pretty quickly with the “Cnt” b/w “Lowcut Champagne” single on Noppa, but the four-track Swarm/Shift/Sequence/Spawn EP is a higher-profile record. And frankly, it finds the Helsinki-based beatmaker employing many of the same tricks that made “Shawty” so great. Drum work is Teeth’s true strength, and opener “Frequencies” employs a flurry of snappy kicks and snares while keeping the melody to a moody minimum. “OJ” steps things up with its punchy garage rhythm and ghostly vocal refrain, but it’s not until “SW” that an actual melody is placed front and center. Make no mistake, the song still employs a rapid-fire percussive attack, but the light, almost trancey stabs and warped R&B vocal snippets offer a nice change to Teeth’s usual dark and dubby exploits. “19éme” continues in a similar direction, effectively melding flashes of classic big-room synth sounds with clacketing organic drum sounds. Without a doubt, Teeth is evolving, but he’s not in any rush to do so.

Wurst Music Readies Label Compilation

NYC’s Wurst Music imprint has been responsible for a steady flow of 12″s and EPs in recent years and now the label is set to finally unleash its first full-length in the form of a new compilation, aptly titled The Wurst Music Ever. The ten-track collection boasts names familiar to the imprint’s roster with contributions coming from Ulysses, Native Underground (pictured above), Great Weekend, and Nick Chacona, joined by an impressive list of newcomers to the Wurst fold getting in on the disco-house action including Miracles Club, Chicago Damn, Tiago, Pink Stallone, and recent label signees soho808. You can check the artwork and full tracklist for the forthcoming LP below. The Wurst Music Ever is slated for release on November 7.

Aquarius Heaven “Interview (feat. dOP)”

A new name has been floating around the Wolf + Lamb circle as of late with the upcoming release from a recent addition to the imprint, Aquarius Heaven. The former “dancehall, reggae, and hip-hop singer” has reoriented himself with a move to Berlin and a new EP, Can’t Buy Love (artwork above), which marks the vocalist/producer’s debut outing for the Wolf + Lamb imprint. Here, we have the digital-only bonus track from said EP, a track that employs a name more familiar to the circle, dOP. “Interview” turns out to be quite a literal song title, as the steadily subdued track finds Aquarius Heaven answering a few lofty and hypothetical questions involving happiness, a girlfriend murdering someone, and what choices one would make at the end of the world. “Interview” is definitely one of the weirder outings you’ll find in our downloads section, but it’s this kind of murky mix between strange, alluring, and oddly soulful sounds that keeps us coming back for more of what Wolf + Lamb has to offer.
