Listen to the Mark Pistel, Jack Dangers, and Ben Stokes Single From Mr. INTL

For the next 12″ offering of vintage-inspired club music to come from Andy Butler’s (a.k.a. Mr. Hercules & Love Affair) Mr. INTL label we have a collaborative effort between recent H&LA sign-on Mark Pistel and Jack Dangers of Meat Beat Manifesto (pictured above) and Chicago house veteran Ben Stokes (a.k.a. DHS). The “Solus” b/w “That’s What I Like” record will drop on April 4, and is said to feature a sound that evokes the artists’ various backgrounds in industrial music. You can hear what it sounds like for yourself, and stream both tracks before they’re released, below.

Hervé “Together (C.R.S.T. Remix)”

London’s Hervé has a new single about to drop on April 17 via his burgeoning imprint, Cheap Thrills, and Liverpool’s 3 Beat label, called “Together” (pictured above). Here, the classic rave-inspired club jam is refitted with a fresher palette of ostentatious audio courtesy of Welsh production quartet C.R.S.T. With shuffling dancefloor beats, deep synth stabs, disembodied diva vocals, bubbling bass tones, and rapid-fire tempos in its arsenal, “Together (C.R.S.T. Remix)” offers a solid alternative to the quasi-kitschy vibes of the original tune—instead pumping a slick future-garage style that the Cardiff outfit is known for. Feel free to compare the two versions, and pick your own favorite, via the funny little promo video for “Together,” below.

Watch Thom Yorke DJ at Low End Theory LA

Now, let’s be honest: This is basically just a novelty, but an enjoyable one nonetheless. Last weekend at LA’s monthly beat scene get-together, Low End Theory, Radiohead frontman and recent Burial and Four Tet collaborator Thom Yorke dropped an impromptu DJ set, and someone just happened to catch some excellent footage of the affair. See the contemporary music icon get wild behind the decks, as he drops tracks from the likes of Burial and Quasimoto. Try to watch this without breaking a smile. We dare you. (via Pitchfork)

Lethal Bizzle “Pow (Roska Remix)”

Today, UK funky don Roska dropped a free remix via his Twitter account, and it’s just far too good to not repost ourselves. The DJ/producer hijacks the many hyperactive vocal stems from the updated version of 2004 grime hit “Pow” by Lethal Bizzle (pictured above), and lays them over a particularly rude riddim chock full of sinister bass tones, cracking snares, light-footed percussion loops, and bubbling sound effects. Roska’s whole production bounces and wiggles about at a deceptively quick pace, as it simultaneously sports elements running at full-throttle and half-time tempos, an ideal tune to drop at either end of the BPM spectrum.

Institubes Calls it Quits After Nearly Eight Years

Today, Jean-René Etienne and Emile Shahidi, heads of French electronic imprint Institubes, announced that their nearly eight-year-old record label—that worked with artists the likes of Para One, Zombie Disco Squad, Harvard Bass, Midnight Juggernauts, Surkin, and Das Glow, among others—will no longer be releasing music. In a lengthy press release (that also doubles as a sort of State of the Union address for the music world), Etienne and Shahidi state, “We never lived those halcyon days some industry elders tend to rave about. We always moved through a post-apocalyptic, terminally pauperized landscape, complete with irradiated A&R zombies and mutated eyeless bloggers. It’s always been a bit of an uphill battle. But it got worse and worse. At first it was fun to figure out ways to get people to check out our music. But once that’s done and you have something resembling an audience, it becomes apparent that this is not really your job. Your job is to reconcile the public with the very idea of buying records. All the power to you if you can bear it.” It’s a sad state of affairs, to be sure, but it ends with the announcement that a “closing event” will be coming soon. You can read more of the piece, which includes information on the remaining artists from Institubes roster, here.

Outbox: Wagon Christ

Since the early ’90s, Luke Vibert has been an institution of the UK’s experimental dance music scene, holding his own alongside fellow veteran heavy-hitters like Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, and ?-Ziq. The prolific artist has delivered an almost non-stop stream of quality singles, EPs, and LPs—under a variety of handles, including Plug, Wagon Christ, and his given name—during his nearly two-decade-long career, the latest of which dropped this past Monday via Ninja Tune. With the new Wagon Christ LP, called Toomorrow, out now, we decided to have a little e-chat with Vibert. He told us about the first electronic track he ever made, why he loves “UK hardcore rap” so much, and what he really thinks about Kid606.

What can you hear while you answer these questions?
The television in the background. A show about antiques—oh, the adverts have just started now.

If there was a cocktail called “The Wagon Christ,” what would be in it?
Some kind of liquids, I suppose, but I wouldn’t know. [I’m] not much of a drinker.

If you could only produce one style of music for the rest of your career, which would it be: jungle, drum & bass, or acid? Why?
I wouldn’t or couldn’t! I’d rather not make any [music] than be restricted like that.

What new producers are you digging these days?
Hmm… Can’t think of any, I’m afraid. I only listen to old music and some by my friends (Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, Ceephax, Ed DMX, Tipper, Mark Pritchard).

What’s the name of the first track you ever made? What did it sound like?
Hard question! I was in dodgy bands when I was young (from age 13 to 17), and we made some demos recorded in cheap studios. I think the first electronic track was called “Casid,” from 1989, and it was me and my friend Jeremy Simmonds trying to make acid house with only a cheap Casio keyboard. It sounds very strange, but I still like it. 🙂

Still got any gear left from when you first started producing?
Oh yeah, almost all of it. The only thing I don’t have is my Yamaha DX-100 that broke. 🙁

What are some of your favorite vocal samples that appear on your new Wagon Christ album, Toomorrow?
My faves are probably in the track “Sentimental Hardcore.” They’re the voices of my kids when they were babies (now they’re aged eight and 10!).

Describe a Luke Vibert performance in the early ’90s.
Pretty frighteningly similar to now, really! I only ever DJ (no live sets), so the only thing that’s changed is that I play off my laptop instead of records. I have a much wider choice now. 🙂

That mix of “UK Hardcore Rap” you did last year is totally awesome. What inspired you to put that together?
Thank you! [UK rap] is something I’ve loved since it started. I didn’t want people to forget that once upon a time it wasn’t just about having massive commercial success, as it is now, but about making interesting, challenging, and brutal music!

Where’s your favorite place to perform in the world? Your favorite in the UK?
Japan, in the world, and up north anywhere in the UK (from Manchester up to Scotland!).

Who’s the artist behind Toomorrow‘s crazy cover illustration? How did you find him/her?
Thanks. That’s my friend Cel. He’s made the last couple of Wagon Christ LP covers, and the music videos for “Receiver” and “Shadows” with the help of some other friends. Now he’s making a video for “Chunkothy” from the new LP. I can’t wait to see it!

For the Warp20 (Recreated) compilation, you did a new version of “LFO” by LFO. Which tune of yours would you like to hear covered, and by whom?
Hmm… Not sure if I’m that bothered, but it would be funny to hear a band trying to replay something complicated!

Kid606 once named a song “Luke Vibert Can Kiss My Indie-Punk Whiteboy Ass.” Your thoughts?
I like Miguel [De Pedro]—he’s a top man. He’d just sampled a track of mine (that I did under the name Plug), and the title reflected his punky attitude! It was like him saying, ‘Come and sue me then!,’ which I really respect! (So I didn’t!)

Mike Bubbles “Inspek Ya Dekz”

Forthcoming on Eliot Lipp‘s Old Tacoma label is a fresh EP of old-school-indebted jams from Brooklyn’s Mike Bubbles. His record, Bubble Works, features six tracks of boogie- and G-funk-flavored dancefloor music, and “Inspek Ya Dekz” is easily one of the strongest of the batch. For this tune, Bubbles takes no time diving right into a slick, massive groove, and employs a veritable cornucopia of organic percussive sounds and smooth synth lines to keep your body swaying in between the boom and smack of the solid beat. The whole thing radiates late ’80s/early ’90s authenticity—making it more than apparent that the producer knows the work of his sonic forefathers inside and out. You can hear more of Bubbles’ music when Bubble Works drops next week, and check out a video for his “Groovin 4 Tha Sistaz” number below.

Video: Tommy Four Seven “G”

Primate, the debut album to come from Berlin-based sound artist Tommy Four Seven (out at the end of this month via CLR), takes an interesting and relatively fresh approach to the well-traversed genre of techno. The up-and-coming producer forwent the usual course of re-working drum samples and handmade synth tones to flesh out his compositions, and instead created his own library of sounds, which was built from field recordings made throughout his daily life and intricately crafted vocal melodies. Here, we have the vaguely dystopic video for one such piece, called “G.” The clip is the brainchild of filmmakers Trevor Jacobson and Tanya Goehring (a.k.a. The Automatic Message), and features a man who seems to be inexplicably drawn to a sort of bus shelter filled with civilians donning a variety of gas masks. We really can’t explain much more than that, but we can say the bleak, impressionistic nature of the video fits quite well with Tommy Four Seven’s brooding and disquieting music. You can check out the artwork and tracklist for Primate below.
