Jeremiah Jae “Kings Bop”

Chicago-based rapper/producer Jeremiah Jae delves deep into some collage-style beatmaking with this cut from his recently released Rappayamatantra EP (artwork above). Kicking off with a menacing scream, the beat rolls along with loose hand percussion and a round, lazy bassline. Completely incomprehensible mumblings loop to the point of creating their own rhythms on top of which Jae throws any number of samples, from bubbling synth sparks and fuzzy guitar to foreign language field recordings and woodwind screechings. It seems most any sound source is fair game on this instrumental track, yet Jae seems to find a fluidity in the arrangement of his collage pieces, adding and taking away elements in such a way that they are only as jarring as the producer intended them to be. Hard to imagine where this one will fit in amongst the EP’s eight tracks (at least a few of which surely feature the rapper’s raspy vocals), but Jae has never been one to follow a rigid path in his musical outings, and we certainly wouldn’t want it to be otherwise. Murcof to Release New Version of La Sangre Iluminada Film Soundtrack

Mexican electronic musician Fernando Corona (a.k.a. Murcof) has been crafting dark, textural soundscapes for almost a decade now, first appearing as Murcof for his Leaf Label LP, Martes, in 2002. In the time since, Corona has put out multiple LPs under his Murcof moniker as well as collaborating and producing a host of other projects, including making the logical jump to scoring films. Which brings us to his forthcoming release, La Sangre Iluminada, a re-edit of the compositions Corona crafted for the Mexican film of the same name. As in all things Murcof, we can expect the forthcoming LP to be chock-full of vast sonic landscapes and vivid textures, most likely on the moody side considering the movie’s plot revolves around “six characters who mutate into new bodies. Deep down, all six keep traces of their past lives, of the former bodies they miss; deep-seated nostalgia has a strong hold on them.” Eerie, right? You can check a little promo video for the album with some clips of the film, as well as the album’s artwork and tracklist below. La Sangre Iluminada is set to be released in vinyl format April 18 with a digital release set for May 9.

Yoshitoshi to Drop New Pig & Dan Single Featuring Sharam Remix

Washington, DC, dance music label Yoshitoshi just announced the impending release of a brand-new single for veteran production duo Pig & Dan‘s lively “Detonate” tune. While there seems to be no ‘original’ version of the tune, the new record does include an “Ethnic Mix,” a “Punch in the Face Bass Mix,” and a “Crazi Remix” from Deep Dish alum Sharam. All three tracks will be available exclusively through Beatport on March 22, but before then, you can stream previews of the music, and check out the artwork, below.

Lloyd “Lay It Down (Physical Therapy Remix)”

A quick glance at Ghe20 Gothik resident Physical Therapy‘s Soundcloud and you’ll notice that the East Coast producer has an affinity for flipping radio R&B jams into slow, percussive, bass-minded tracks. Take, for instance, his newly released mixtape, Therapy Sessions Vol. 1 (that you can download for free over on his new site), which comes sprinkled with refixes of past and present radio jams like this one of bubble-gum R&B singer Lloyd. Physical Therapy takes only small snippets from the original’s intro strings along with a few choice vocal parts and skillfully rearranges them, crafting a slow, methodical, half-time head-nodder in which spacious 808-style kicks and skittering percussion supplement the smooth R&B source material. Whether Physical Therapy is just making sweet remix love to some guilty-pleasure tunes or actually commenting on some deeper post-modern consumer-as-creator-type thing is still unknown, and that’s fine by us as long as he keeps hitting us with tracks like this.

Beatport to Donate All Profits From March 21 to Help Japan

Continuing in the wonderful support the electronic music community is extending to Japan and its people, massive online music retailer Beatport has announced that it will donate all of its profits from Monday, March 21, towards the relief efforts taking place in Sendai. So, if you’ve got plans to grab any new (or old) digital tunes, not only should you hold off until Monday, you should also make sure you look for those jams on Beatport. This is a rare chance for consumerism to do some real good.

LOL Boys to Release Self-Titled EP Via Discobelle

It’s no secret that we harbor a strong affinity for Los Angeles/Montreal combo LOL Boys, and the kinds of tropically informed dancefloor burners they make so well. XLR8R‘s most recent podcast contributor, Salva, has sent this somewhat disturbing video our way for the track “Keys Open Doors,” from his new LP, Complex Housing. Here’s what very well may be your only chance to watch a slightly awkward but vividly brutal backyard-fight-club scene play out accompanied by a sleek, futuristic house beat. Complex Housing is out now on the Friends of Friends imprint.

Casual Fridays: Time keepers, tropical caps, and telephone cases!

Our resident stylist Andrew Porter waxes casual on men’s and women’s must-haves.

LifeProof iPhone 4 Case
I’ve gone through something like six phones in the past year. My Blackberry I flat out left on a counter top. I had a Samsung that fell into the East River. My last phone fell victim to misplaced frustration when I texted half of my phonebook “LOL,” and then threw it into a vacant lot on Atlantic Ave.—at 5:00 a.m. I’m now on my second iPhone. I live in fear of breaking this thing, so I bought a super-duty-tough-work Otter Box case. Honestly, it’s the ugliest thing you’ve ever seen—it doesn’t even fit in my pocket. So I was more than excited to see this LifeProof case. It’s ultra-slim, built to withstand near-seven-foot drops, and you can use it underwater. WHAT? This thing is amazing! Ever wanted to listen to “Pipeline” while surfing at Pipeline? Now you can. With this case, you can swim, surf, and, most importantly “chat, text, or watch movies in the bath.” Finally, I can combine my passion for Italian neo-realism with my passion for bathing.

Uniform Wares 100 Series Watch
I’ve written about watches a few times here. I have a drawer full of them. If I hit the town sans-watch, I feel naked, and not in a good way. I mostly wear Swatches and G-Shocks, but I understand that they are not for everybody. For those looking for a more “adult” option, check out these Uniform Wares 100 Series watches. Super-simple and clean, these timepieces are modeled after the “no-nonsense wall clocks of British industry.” Not really sure what that means entirely, but it sounds like a good thing to tell somebody when they ask you about your watch. Personally, I love the monochromatic face-and-strap combo. The cases are made of matte aircraft-grade anodized aluminum, which adds a little shine to this understated piece. Team that with Japanese quartz movement and a 36-month battery life, and you have a perfectly simple watch. Ideal for him or her.

LeTom Mojito Straw Cap
The first time I met my friend Lily, she was wearing a leather visor with tooled floral detailing. Shortly thereafter, I saw her again, this time wearing a woven straw baseball cap. Needless to say, I was fully taken aback by her tropical swag. These LeTom hats give off a major-league, summertime feel in the best way possible—bringing the islands to the city through a perfect combination of woven straws. It takes a certain type of lady to pull off a hat like this, but if done right, one can look like the most radiant beam of sunshine. I’ve since worked with Lily for five years, and learned that she has been happily married for seven years to a top-ranking gentleman. The moral of the story is this: If you ever meet a woman that can pull off a straw baseball hat, hold on tight. You’ve found a real gem.

Watch Footage From Aphex Twin’s Bloc Weekend Performance

Thanks to the efforts of one rather dedicated attendee of the UK’s Bloc Weekend festivities earlier this month, about 15 minutes of good footage from Aphex Twin’s headlining performance for the festival have found its way to the internet Sure, the audio isn’t great and the video isn’t super-professional, but nonetheless, it’s still pretty amazing to see the king of IDM surrounded by a bunch of video screens throwing down some hot jams. Enjoy. (via FACT)
