Tropikal Camel “Beeehave”

Berlin-based, Jerusalem-born artist Roi Assayag (a.k.a Tropikal Camel) is set to serve up his new album, Awakening Spirits, on Brussels’ Rebel Up

Tropikal Camel casts a spell over audiences from Europe to Africa through the Middle East by blending percussion with a psychedelic edge. It is a sound that draws on his Middle Eastern and North African heritage and heads into the future. In his unique way, he fuses elements into a special blend of driven bass, deep pads, and chopped chants.

Los Angeles Trombonist Ryan Porter Details New Album via Alpha Pup’s World Galaxy

Photo:  Aaron Haggerty

Los Angeles-based trombonist and composer Ryan Porter will release his third album, Force For Good, on June 14 with Alpha Pup Records‘ World Galaxy. It follows his sophomore album, The Optimist, released last year.

Force For Good was written and recorded between 2014-19 and features  core members of the West Coast Get Down, a collaborative group of musicians all born and raised in Los Angeles. This includes Kamasi Washington (sax), Brandon Coleman (piano, Fender Rhodes), Cameron Graves (piano, Fender Rhodes), Miles Mosley (acoustic bass), Thundercat (electric bass), and Tony Austin (drums). Other contributing members include Nia Andrews (vocals), Josef Leimberg (trumpet, percussion), Robert Miller (drums), Aaron Haggerty (drums), Lyndon Rochelle (drums), and Jumaane Smith (trumpet).

The album was captured across different locations in Los Angeles. Sheet music and general instructions were brought to the studio but Porter gave the players freedom to explore around the plotted transitions and changes. Three takes were recorded for each composition.

Album title Force For Good references an interview passage by John Coltrane during the ’60s.

I was doing research on John Coltrane when I came across an interview of him being asked why his music seemed to attract many different types of intellectual, philosophical, and spiritual people. He stated that he made some changes in his own personal life that made him question his purpose on this earth. In the course of thinking of his purpose on this earth, he noticed that in this life everyone is faced with a decision and that decision guides what your contribution to this world will be. He thought to himself there is so much evil in the world and so many people are making the choice to become a force for evil. John felt making a choice to be a force for good would not only help his life but make his music the film score for the people who choose to force for good no matter what the conditions are. The Force for Good album is my contribution to the legacy of John Coltrane’s message of peace, love, and unity through music.” — Ryan Porter

The album lands on digital platforms June 14, with physical pressings to follow later this year. Along with the new album, Porter will join Kamasi Washington’s live band as they embark on an opening tour for Herbie Hancock this summer. This will be followed by his own tour of Europe and the UK to present music across his first three albums.

Amazondotcom’s Solo EP Debut Coming Through New Label SUBREAL

Amazondotcom will release her first solo EP, Mirror River (SR001), via SUBREAL, her new label with N.A.A.F.I. affiliate Siete Catorce. Over four tracks, the Los Angeles-based producer works with deep bass frequencies and ritualistic percussion.

Siete Catorce and AMAZONDOTCOM previously collaborated on the Teardropz EP, released on Nostro Hood System last year.

Amazondotcom, real name Stella Ahn, describes her production process simply as a place where forms are released free and animated. She digitally processed an array of samples (among them birds, trees, people in crowds) and synths to create the sound forces that guide the tracks.

SUBREAL focuses on non-conforming musical projects. The label encourages artists outside or on the fringes of cultures to create and map their own singular musical realities.

Jameszoo to Release Live Album with 49-Piece Metropole Orkest via Brainfeeder

Photo: Catherine Lemblé

In 2017, Jameszoo opened Amsterdam Dance Event with a special collaboration with Jules Buckley and the Grammy-Award winning Metropole Orkest at the Melkweg concert hall. The recordings of this collaboration will be released via Brainfeeder on May 17.

The performance saw Buckley, Chief Conductor of the Metropole Orkest since 2013, lead the 49-piece orchestra, plus Richard Spaven (drums); Niels Broos (organs, synths, Rhodes); Frank Wienk (percussion); John Dikeman (saxophone), and Jameszoo (real name Mitchel van Dinther) on electronics, synths, and Wurlitzer. Together, they elevated the compositions from Jameszoo’s 2016 album, Fool.

“This was as wonderful as it was frightening,” says Jameszoo. “I was in great hands being guided by Jules and the orchestra. Because of them I could hear my compositions flower.”

Jameszoo released Fool in 2016 via Brainfeeder. The record featured cameos from Brazilian composer Arthur Verocai and pianist Steve Kuhn, plus bassist Thundercat, keyboardist Niels Broos, and drummers Richard Spaven and Julian Sartorius.

Das SPEZIAL “Spezial—Battle Weapons 1”

Das SPEZIAL is a new project launched in 2019 that fuses the sound of house, techno, breakbeat, and indie to produce a psychedelic and electronic experience. The artist behind the alias is unknown.

This second EP comes hot on the heels of a first and has already been supported by artists like Ewan Pearson, Justin Robertson, Red Axes, Perel, and Psychemagik.

It features six tracks that are fun and original, such as the languid opener with its psyched-out guitar licks and rugged dark disco drums. Elsewhere there is freaky synth-heavy house, big breaks with pads that will fry your brain, and twisted electronica with electrifying effects and sound design. All six tracks are high impact affairs designed to bring chaos to the club.

Battle Weapons lands June 1, with opener “Battle Weapons 1” available for free download via the WeTransfer button below, or here for EU readers due to temporary GDPR restrictions.

Podcast 591: Gayphextwin

Ask artists in the Bay Area for their local musical recommendations and Gayphextwin’s will name crop up quite a bit, although word of her work is only now beginning reach the wider world. The lady behind the rather tongue-in-cheek name is Brooke Keller, a rising musician now based in San Francisco, California. She began producing music 14 years ago and releases under various other aliases, including odi me, djcheaplocalgirl, and Patience Waining; there are several others that are yet to be attributed to her. “I mainly listen to alternative rock and play video games so my sound is the intersection of those two things,” she says.

Important in her progress has been Doc Sleep, who signed Keller to Jacktone Records, the label she runs with Darren Cutlip, and coincidentally notified us of her. Keller first surfaced as odi me with two full-lengths in 2015 and 2016 respectively, exploring techno, ambient, noise, and jungle, before becoming Gayphextwin for her third album, Spiro, in 2018. It’s an album of spectacular precision that forges rough and ready compositions from icy pads, voyeuristic samples, and whip-crack percussion.

Keller’s XLR8R podcast is much like this: recorded live in one take, it’s full of original material made on the fly, with no other aim but to make us dance. It’s wistful and introspective but at its core lies razor-sharp edges and crackling in-the-moment grunge energy. “I think the questions were a bigger time sink than recording the mix,” she says.

What have you been up to recently?

Trying to teach myself how to sing and play guitar at the same time so I can record the rock album of my dreams. Also working on another album full of dancing music as well as some smaller EPs. I think I’m simultaneously working on like four collections of music right now.

Talk to me about your background in music. How did you get to where are you today?

I’ve been at it for about 14 years. I don’t think I’d be anywhere close to where I am today without Doc Sleep and Experimental Housewife’s constant love and support.

You also release as Brooke Keller, odi me, djcheaplocalgirl, and Patience Waining. How do you distinguish between the projects?

The main thing that sets my projects apart from each other is that the songs are different. Not to mention my cosplay wouldn’t be complete if I didn’t have a million aliases, would it? There are tons of others floating around the internet but I’m ashamed to mention them. I think more than anything I like for my releases to feel cohesive, so I’ll change my name to create new threads in my discography so that it doesn’t feel like I’m rambling.

What’s the story behind the Gayphextwin name?

That famous photograph of Richard (D. James) for “Windowlicker” is what my real body looks like, not to mention I’m a bit of a windowlicker. I figure if Richard can use my identity to sell records I can use his as well. I’m also very gay.

What do you consider to be the key reasons behind your sound aesthetic?

I mainly listen to alternative rock and play video games so my sound is the intersection of these two things.

What other artists are really exciting you on the Bay Area scene right now?

Piano Rain is forever my muse. So much of what I do is only possible because of what she does. Russell Butler is constantly setting the bar higher and higher. Jasmine Infinity doesn’t live here anymore but their energy is unparalleled. Erica Mar’s music is hauntingly beautiful. The Creatrix makes music that might save us all someday. Club Chai and everyone associated with it are a treasure. Lizard Bitch is just too cool for words. There’s so much talent in the Bay, hopefully we can all secure housing and make rent next month.

When and where was this mix recorded?

This set was recorded in one frantic take on my bed soon after you people asked me to provide something. The whole thing is just me going for it on one monomachine. Well, except for the last track, which is a recording from a live set I performed last year.

How much of the material that you make do you release?

Almost none of it! Nobody needs that much content from me. I’ve probably recorded hundreds of hours of music in my life and its almost all trash. I released three albums and an EP last year and I think it was mostly filler. I’m trying to be better at getting to the point and not rambling in my music.

What’s next on the horizon musically?

More guitars, more screaming, higher tempos, blown out speakers, tears, even higher tempos, lower tempos, me singing, me sobbing, emasculation, and maybe some other things but I’m really just winging this whole music thing all the time.

Philip Grass “Done with the Groove”

Up next on Periphery Records is Philip Grass‘ Freak EP.

Freak is an EP in transit, nodding towards the series of groovers released on 2018’s Summer Thing while stepping leftward into experimental dance music.

The record kicks off in familiar Philip Grass fashion on “Done with the Groove,” a shuffling house track assembled around wandering keys and pads. While a bit somber on the front half, a warm chord appears and reframes the main loop into something more uplifting. Side B enters unfamiliar territory. “Freak Dub” is a hypnotic track at the intersection of garage and techno. The title track, a great mixer for left-leaning sets, concludes the EP.

Freak EP lands May 10, with “Done with the Groove” available for download via the WeTransfer button below, or here for EU readers due to temporary GDPR restrictions.

French-Congolese Afro-Punks TSHEGUE Share New Single with DJ Marfox Remix

Photo: Juliette Abitbol

French-Congolese afro-punks TSHEGUE have shared “The Wheel,” their first new music since their debut EP, Survivor, in 2017.  The single comes with a video and a DJ Marfox remix.

TSHEGUE is the collaboration of Congolese singer Faty Sy Savanet and French-Cuban producer Nicolas Dacunha. The band’s name is a slang word for the boys who gather on the streets of Kishasa, Faty’s home before she moved to Paris. In her early 20s, a mutual friend brought Faty into contact with Bertrand Burgalat, whose Tricatel label has been referenced as a key influence by the likes of Air and Daft Punk. Burgalat encouraged her formative musical experiments until Faty was introduced to Dacunha, whose hypnotic beat patterns form the thumping backbone to the band’s work, spanning afro-punk, garage rock, and and electro-clash.

The video was filmed amidst the chaotic traffic of Kinshasa and stars Club Etoile Rollers, a mixed-gender collective, some as young as 13, who skate the city’s streets.

Director Renaud Barret recalls: “An ordinary day in Kinshasa. I’m in a taxi on Lumumba boulevard, when suddenly I’m in the middle of this gang of kids slaloming between cars. We exchange thumbs up, signs of complicity, rolling side by side for a moment. One of them spots my camera, and comes closer to shout “Hey sir! Do you wanna shoot something crazy?” I couldn’t refuse. This is the magic of a limitless city where each and every day brings incredible spontaneous possibilities. Now as I watch the beaming faces of these kids, thrown at full speed on their crumbling rollers, almost out of control, intoxicated by danger and only protected by their faith in good luck; I can only see a metaphor for the Congo’s situation. But also a middle finger to a society trying to maintaining an illusion that everything should be controlled, supervised. These free riders remind us that life must be lived in the present.”

The single precedes an upcoming new EP.
