Kelly Moran Pays Tribute to Japanese Figure-Skater Yuzuru Hanyu on New Warp EP

Photograph by: Tim Saccenti

Kelly Moran has announced her latest EP, Origin, out May 17 on Warp Records

The EP’s name is a tribute to the drive, determination, and perseverance of Yuzuru Hanyu, the figure-skater from Japan whom Moran considers one of her idols.

Musically, it features a handful of demos and unreleased music from the writing sessions that formed her Ultraviolet LP, while serving as both a “companion piece” to her Warp debut and “an alternate view of its world.”

We’re told to expect seven songs of largely acoustic recordings featuring Moran at her home piano and recorded in one take. “These recordings show first hand my musical discoveries in real-time for when I was having my major creative breakthrough,” says Moran.

Skinny Pelembe Announces Debut Album, ‘Dreaming Is Dead Now’

Skinny Pelembe has announced details of his debut album, Dreaming Is Dead Now, out May 24 on Brownswood Recordings

Over 10 tracks, the Johannesburg-born, Doncaster-raised artist meditates on grief, heartache, stunted aspirations, and fresh possibilities in post-recession Britain. Many of the songs have germinated through a decade-long process, a reckoning with the family, grief, and romantic turning points during that period. It’s described as a “patchwork of personal and musical touchstones,” and follows a series of 12″s on Gilles Peterson’s London label.

The album artwork nods to two of Skinny’s favourite albums: Alice Coltrane’s Journey to Satchidananda” and The White Stripes’ White Blood Cells.

Chicago’s Damon Locks Shares New Single from Forthcoming 15-Piece Ensemble Project

Chicago’s Damon Locks has revealed new single “The Colors That You Bring” from his forthcoming project, Where Future Unfolds

What began as a solo sound collage piece with Locks sampling Civil Rights era speeches to create an improvisational pallet for performance on his drum machine eventually expanded into the fully-fledged 15-piece “Black Monument Ensemble” featuring musicians (including Angel Bat Dawid on clarinets and Dana Hall on drums), singers (alumni of the Chicago Children’s Choir), and dancers (members of Chicago youth dance company Move Me Soul.) Locks contributed the album cover art and wrote all lyrics and compositions.

The release is described as “an excursion through political activism and astral jazz,” recorded live at Garfield Park Conservatory as part of Red Bull Music Festival, Chicago, on November 15, 2018. It lands digitally on May 31 with Chicago-based recording company International Anthem, with CD and vinyl pressings hitting record stores on June 14.

Den Nard Husher “Info Space” (1999)

Thule Records

Den Hard Husher is made up of Icelandic duo Arni Valur Kristinsson and Jónas Thor Gudmundsson. “Info Space” is a moody techno number with a deep rolling groove, released on renowned Icelandic label Thule Records. Thule has a reputation for releasing heavy dub-influenced minimal techno by artists such as Sanasol, Exos, Thor, Octal, and Ozy. After a brief hiatus, the label opened again in 2013.

EVA808 “Prrr” (2017)

Innamind Recordings

EVA808, real name Eva Jóhannsdóttir, has been a staple of the underground bass music scene for some years, having started making grime and dubstep around 2011. It’s not easy to categorize her sound but much of it sits closely to dubstep with more driving beats. “Prrr” is a club-ready, two-tracker which has been lauded by artists such as Nina Kraviz and Hudson Mohawke.  EVA808 has released a track for this month’s edition of XLR8R+ which can be downloaded here when you subscribe to X+.

Thor “Aliens Don’t Boogie” (1999)

Æ Recordings

Thor (a.k.a Thorhallur Skulason) is one of the originators of Icelandic techno. “Aliens Don’t Boogie” was originally released on the Aliens Don’t Boogie EP in 1999 through Æ Recordings, a sub-label of Thule Recordings. It has since been reissued on labels such as Missile Records in 2002 and the infamous German techno label Sushitech Records in 2015.

Biogen “Afloat” (1998)

Uni:form Recordings

Sigurbjörn Þórgrímsson became a hugely influential figure in Iceland’s early music scene by using various aliases to portray different sounds within the electronic sphere. “Afloat,” released under his Biog is an atmospheric techno number released in 1998 on the Contemporary Electronics Vol. 1 EP via Uni:form Recordings. Sigurbjörn sadly passed away in 2011, leaving a legacy of music behind which has and will influence musicians and artists for generations to come.

Exos “Gegnum Skráargat” (1998)

Thule Records

Exos, real name Arnvidur Snorrason, is the son of dub techno producer Octal. “Gegnum Skráargat” features on the 1998 Q-box EP. It’s a dub techno track with wicked grooves perfect for a dancefloor, and is reminiscent of some of Delano Smith’s best work. This is another one of Thule Records’ finest releases.

Bjarki “Orange Juice Man” (2015)

трип

Bjarki (a.k.a Bjarki Rúnar Sigurðarson) is the curator of this month’s edition of XLR8R+, our Icelandic special, shining a light on his countrymen by bringing in the music and artwork from Icelandic artists. He is a vital member of the Icelandic scene, not just through his own releases but because of his label, bbbbbb Records. “Orange Juice man” was released on the Arthur And Intergalactic Whales EP on Russian label трип.

OZ Artists “Art Of Wrestling” (1997)

OZ Interactive Inc.

OZ Artists was an Icelandic duo made up of Thor and Aðalsteinn Guðmundsson, another pivotal member of the Icelandic scene known for his experimental work as Yagya or his techno releases as Zitron. “Art Of Wrestling” featured on OZ Artists’ first release, The Zone EP.  It’s the type of track you could play at an after party or at the peak of the night, with its melodic, hypnotising feel.

Volruptus “Jargon” (2017)

bbbbbb

Volruptus first appeared on Sweaty Records in 2016, but he has since become a central figure in Bjarki’s bbbbbb and трип, having made his debut on both in 2017. He combines the warped melodies of Rephlex and the high BPMs of Detroit electro. “Jargon” was released in 2017 on the Homeblast EP via bbbbbb Records. He has also recently contributed a track to XLR8R+ which can be downloaded here.

Ajax Project “Ruffige” (1992)

(Self-Release)

Ajax Project was the breakbeat and hardcore project of Biogen and Thor. “Ruffige”was made in collaboration with Goldie when he visited Iceland, and has gone on to become a cult favorite.

Sigur Rós “Leit að Lífi” (1998)

Smekkleysa

Sigur Rós are one of Iceland’s biggest musical exports. We could have used any number of their tracks, but the one we’ve chosen is not what you’d expect. In 1998, they released an IDM, breaks, and experimental remix album entitled Von Brigði on Smekkleysa, and this is where “Leit að Lífi” comes from. It’s a beautiful track incorporating elements of drum & bass, electro, and breaks but still with the emotional resonance that surrounds their entire catalog.

dBridge’s Exit Records Announces Debut LP from Dolenz

Dolenz will release his debut album via dBridge‘s Exit Records

Lingua Franca was written as an imaginary soundtrack to the dystopian sci-fi movie of the same name, set on a sister planet of Earth (called “Geminus.”) In the movie, the main protagonist discovers that all other species on the planet are “communicating” with the Earth’s core, which is keeping it turning. “Humans” are the only species that aren’t doing this and they eventually destroy the planet.

Dolenz is the alias of Neil Andrew, whose journey has taken him from High Wycombe to London, then to the Middle East for nine years and now back to London. He’s previously released twice on Exit, with 2017’s Evesdrop and this year’s Pull

Podcast 590: Christian Löffler

It’s not too long ago that XLR8R visited Christian Löffler in his German countryside home beside the Baltic Sea. This was a time when Löffler was just releasing Mare, his sophomore album recorded in a secluded cabin with a modest setup. Ever since its release his fans have been craving something new—another slice of his deep, cerebral house.

Only more recently have cries been answered. Earlier this month, Löffler returned with his third album, Graal (Prologue), out via Ki-Records. Created on the road, the album is a reflection of the German artist’s frustration of not having the mental space at the time to create music. Even more exciting is that Graal (Prologue) serves as a prelude to a second companion album to be released before the end of the year.

In support of Graal (Prologue) and the upcoming album, Löffler has recorded an XLR8R podcast, aimed to give an insight into the music that he’s listening to now. Although it’s not all his own material, fans of Löffler’s work will no doubt enjoy the sounds: it’s full of the sort of endearingly beautiful cuts that Löffler himself is known for. It’s gloomy and introspective at times, driving and upbeat at others; expect an hour of melancholic ambient minimal, euphoric neo-classical techno, and downtempo psychedelic fresh from the mind of one of game’s finest.

Due to issues regarding the GDPR, EU readers can download the podcast here.

What have you been up to recently?

We are currently touring with the new album in Europe. There is one last stop and after that, I will get back to work on the next album.

How are you feeling about this new material?

Excited, as so many things are happening around it and I’m happy to finally share new music. Also, I enjoy the process as I got back into drawing and painting alongside producing the music which is very inspiring in a different way.

How does this upcoming second album compare to the first one in terms of aesthetics?

It’s going to be a proper studio album. Whereas Graal is more about quick sketches and catching the moment, the next album is going more into detail and taking its time to unfold. I’m also recording my own vocals again.

When and where was this mix recorded?

I recorded it last week while I had a break in between tour stops. It’s mixed in Ableton Live using some effects from my productions.

How did you choose the records that you included?

I wanted to have a selection of longtime favorites and current jams. I enjoyed listening again to Pawel’s album on Dial and also John Roberts which was a massive inspiration back then. Also, I wanted to include a track of Janus Rasmussen who released a super beautiful album just recently.

Is there a particular concept behind it?

Not a particular concept as it was; it’s more about catching the moment on that day. I just enjoyed going through some old favorites and combined it with stuff that’s caught my attention lately.

What’s next on the horizon?

I’m having a break from touring in May to catch up on finishing the next album as well as going back into the studio to finalize paintings I’m creating simultaneously to the music. Also, we are setting a massive album release tour for the end of the year all over Europe with a huge new light show. I’m super excited to see this production in its entirety.

K-X-P “Nimetön Tie (3rd Part)”

K-X-P will release IV, a new album via Svart Records, on May 17.

K-X-P is the work of Timo Kaukolampi and Tomi Leppänen, two Finland-based electronic artists. This, their six album, was recorded just as they do their live shows: “No headphones, just loud monitors blasting the synths and beat boxes,” they explain. “Usually we make records in a studio, then after it’s finished we learn and rehearse the tracks and hit the road. This time we made the core of the record and started to play it live pretty much immediately after first drafts. We wanted to do things differently, to get the music in our muscle memory before recording anything.”

We’re told that the raw energy of this approach is palpable on the record. The driving rhythms charge with purpose whilst the synth work washes over sections in giant engulfing waves, and beats collide in rocketing harmony. Whilst the record is thoughtful and doesn’t succumb to easy euphoria, it paces forward with intent and a sonic vigour that would hit audiences as hard as their live shows do.

In advance of the album’s May 17 release, you can download “Nimetön Tie (3rd Part)” via the WeTransfer button below, or here for EU readers due to temporary GDPR restrictions.

Meanwhile, you can pre-order the album here

Flying Lotus Shares Two New Album Cuts

Photo: Renata Raksha

Flying Lotus has shared new tracks from Flamagra, his upcoming studio album on Warp Records featuring a dream cast of collaborators, including David Lynch.

The two-track offering “Spontaneous/Takashi” is the first step into the Flamagra universe.

“Spontaneous” is a flirtatious ballad with Yukimi Nagano of Little Dragon singing atop a funky template. It blends perfectly with “Takashi,” a piano-driven instrumental that swirls itself into a soulful cosmic jam. The track is named after Takashi Yudo, an artist from the creative project teamLab. FlyLo’s visit to this visual experience in 2018 re-inspired his creative spirit.

It’s been nearly five years since the last Flying Lotus album, the Grammy-nominated You’re Dead! Flamagra features (in order of appearance) Anderson .Paak, George Clinton, Tierra Whack, Denzel Curry, Shabazz Palaces, Thundercat, Toro y Moi, Solange, and more. It’s described as an “astral afro-futurist masterpiece of deep soul, cosmic dust, and startling originality.”

More information on the album, including tracklisitng, is available here, with album pre-order here. Meanwhile, you can stream “”Spontaneous” and “Takashi” here

Tim Hecker Shares “You Never Were” from Upcoming Companion LP

Tim Hecker has shared “You Never Were,” the latest track taken from his new album, Anoyo, out May 10 via Kranky

“You Never Were” is a meditative journey that explores raw emotion, structural fragility, and sonic fragmentation. The interjecting layers of synth lines that crackle across the mix add a volatile state to a bed of warmly placed clusters of ambient waves and shape-shifting overtones. It follows “That World,” which the Canadian artist shared earlier.

Anoyo is a companion to Konoyo, Hecker’s previous album, which saw him collaborating with members of the gagaku ensemble Tokyo Gakuso. It’s even drawn from the same studio sessions at Mandala Temple, Tokyo.

Anoyo LP lands across CD, LP, and digital formats on May 10 via Kranky, with “You Never Were” streaming below alongside opener “That World.”

02. Is But A Simulated Blur

03. Step Away From Konoyo
