Check Out a Free Mix From Delorean Friend K**O For Hyperdub 2010 Off-Sonar

Here’s a sweet promo mix from Spanish DJ K**O (pronounced “kee-goh”)—who also collaborates with Delorean on party/blog Desparrame—for the upcoming Off-Sonar party. The event is put on by Plat du Jour, Kode9 and his Hyperdub crew, FACT magazine, and MixCloud, and features performances from acts Ikonika, Cooly G, Mwëslee, Guido, Darkstar, and Slick Dixxx (who has his own promo mix here), among other special surprise guests. The mix itself has only one track from an announced performer (Guido’s “Mad Sax”), and fills the rest of its half-hour with tracks from Swindle, Supra1, Geeneus, and exclusives by BFlecha and Noaipre. Check the Plat du Jour MixCloud page for more info.

Oval “Ah!”

During the 10 years that Markus Popp (a.k.a. Oval) has refrained from releasing any of his melodically experimental electronic tunes, it seems the producer has been quietly reformatting his approach. Ditching form for function, Popp used a $500 PC and some run-of-the-mill computer software to flesh out his weighty 15-track EP (!) and 70-track double-disc album (!!), scheduled for release in June and September, respectively. “Ah!” is the second track from the upcoming LP O, and it offers just the smallest taste of what to expect from Oval’s over-sized project: plinking synths played by hand, impeccably programmed drum sounds, and lilting atmospherics rising and falling behind it all.

John Hughes III (a.k.a. Slicker) Returns With New Album Today

The man behind Hefty Records, and the aliases Bill Ding and Slicker, John Hughes III, returns after a lengthy break to the world of recorded music. Released today on STS9’s 1320 Records, Reset the Warehouse “represents the prime selections from a productive period of meticulous tracking and experimentation at [Hughes’] HFT Studio located outside of Chicago,” reads a recent press release.

“I wanted this recording to have a live, gritty sound, so I took it outside of the computer as much as I could,” Hughes explains. “It was mixed through a board to tape, and the synths are all analog. Within the context of an electronic record, the live performances also help give it a warm, organic feel.” To achieve those effects, Hughes collaborated with friends Rick Embach and Joshua Eustis (of Telefon Tel Aviv). The entire list of Hughes’ co-conspirators can be found here. Check below for a tracklisting of the new album and for Hughes’ tour dates with STS9.

Bumps feat. Guilty Simpson “Drums”

It ain’t Madlib or Dilla, but Tortoise side-project Bumps provides Detroit MC Guilty Simpson with a tailor-made, dirty and distorted breakbeat that we wouldn’t mind hearing on the rapper’s next album. Chances are we won’t get our wish, so we’ll just let this three-and-a-half-minute beat suite play on repeat while we dream of what could be, and maybe mix in Koushik‘s remix every once in a while to change things up.

Podcast 138: FaltyDL

It seems like only yesterday that FaltyDL (a.k.a. Drew Lustman) was just another mild-mannered NYC beatmaker whose little album on Planet Mu had wormed its way into our hearts. Actually, it was only last summer. Regardless, the last 10 months have been a veritable FaltyDL whirlwind, as Lustman has followed up Love Is a Liability with top-flight releases on Ramp and Rush Hour, not to mention remixes for Mount Kimbie and The xx. He’s also made multiple trips across the Atlantic to showcase his DJ stylings—not bad for a guy who headlined our first TURRBOTAX® party. Now that Mr. DL has become a certified big deal, it’s nice to see that he’s retained his fondness for XLR8R, as he actually asked to contribute this exclusive mix for our podcast series. Containing a number of his own productions alongside some classic dubstep, skittery 2-step, and even some juke (courtesy of new labelmate DJ Nate), the mix is surprisingly soulful, even when the beats get a bit manic. It certainly has us excited for whatever FaltyDL has planned for the next 10 months.

New Podcast Series Coming From Nature Sounds

The Brooklyn hip-hop label responsible for pushing work from legendary artists the likes of J. Dilla, Wu-Tang, and Pete Rock, Nature Sounds has unleashed a new series of free podcasts which will feature close and extended members of the beat-and-verse hub’s family. Two mixes are available now through iTunes or Nature Sounds’ own podcast page, DJ Revolution’s Nature Sounds Mega Mix and Best of Ayatollah, which showcase favorite jams from the label’s past and a retrospective of one man’s production work with artists such as Mos Def, Rakim, Pharaohe Monch, and Ghostface Killah, respectively. A Beastie Boys best-of and an R.A. The Rugged Man old-school favorites mix are also in the works for future podcasts.

LCD Soundsystem This Is Happening

Maybe it’s a function of getting older, maybe it’s because This Is Happening was partially recorded in sunny Los Angeles, but it appears that James Murphy has lost some of his affinity for the dancefloor. That’s not to say that the third—and supposedly final—LCD Soundsystem album doesn’t have its uptempo moments or occasionally pilfer from disco’s rich sound palette. But it’s telling that opener “Dance Yrself Clean” trundles along for more than three minutes before a kick drum is added to the mix; even then, it’s not exactly a dance cut. DFA diehards will enjoy the futuristic robo-funk of “One Touch,” while the stripped-down post-punk disco and witty lyricism of “Pow Pow” recalls “Losing My Edge,” LCD’s first single from 2002.

Yet the best moments on This Is Happening come when Murphy gets pensive and dives back into the emotive well that made 2007’s Sound of Silver such a stellar album. The new record doesn’t quite live up to its predecessor, but its middle third is especially strong—”All I Want” finds a melancholy Murphy repeating “All I want is your pity” over soaring melodies and Strokes-like guitars, “Change” is wistful electronic pop with synths reminiscent of Gary Numan, and album standout “Hit” is a nine-minute opus that transitions from twee synths to midtempo new-wave pop, complete with a guitar riff borrowed from The Cars. First single “Drunk Girls” also leans heavily on guitars, but no amount of Murphy’s clever wordplay can alter the fact that the song is borderline annoying. Much better is “Somebody’s Calling Me,” a slow dirge that updates Iggy Pop’s “Nightclubbing,” and “What You Need,” whose sparkling keys and agogo bell percussion cap the album in fine fashion.

Surgeon Contributes to Fabric Mix Series

Veteran UK DJ/producer Anthony Child has been innovating techno under the name Surgeon since the early ’90s, releasing albums and singles on Tresor, Downwards, and his own labels Counterbalance and Dynamic Tension. Already so deep into the game, it’s about time Surgeon contributed a mix to the ongoing Fabric series. Fabric 53: Surgeon comes out July 12 in the UK and August 24 in the US. The hour-plus DJ set extends its grasp into the various realms of hypnotic dance tunes populated by the likes of Scuba, Instra:mental, Ital Tek, Greena, Starkey, and Surgeon himself, though the mastermind behind 53 simply says, “To me, this is all techno. That’s the way I think of it; I don’t subdivide genres, the beats are just slightly different places in the bar. They all have different feels and textures, but I don’t differentiate. I just like all this music, so I want to mix it together.” Check out the artwork and tracklist for Surgeon’s mix below.
