Jayda G’s Album Debut Next on Ninja Tune

Jayda G will release her debut album, Significant Changes, via Ninja Tune on March 22. We’re told to expect a a blend of vintage drum machine funk drawing heavily on Chicago’s house blueprint—as evidenced by new single “Leave Room 2 Breathe,” featuring vocals by life-long friend and frequent collaborator Alexa Dash. The album follows a string of EPs, both solo and alongside her friend and mentor DJ Fett Burger, and her recent remix for Little Dragon.

The nine-track album was completed last year while Jayda G completed her Masters in Resource and Environmental Management specialising in environmental toxicology. Its title was the most used phrase in her final thesis and exemplifies how intertwined her work in science is with her work in music.

“I’m trying to bring my two worlds together… to bridge the communication gap, engage people in a new way,” she explains. “I don’t know if people in the electronic music world will want to talk about the environment but I think I should try! I think it’s our duty to use a platform like this in a positive way, that’s our social responsibility.”

Jayda will be playing a four-week residency at London’s Phonox through February, as well as embarking on a tour throughout 2019 that takes in dates across 12 countries. Additionally, she will be hosting a series of intimate talks in London on February 5 and 19 aimed at offering young scientists a platform to discuss their recent academic work as well as their personal journeys.

Levon Vincent Readies New EP

Levon Vincent will release another new EP next month, titled NS-26.

There’s very little news or information surrounding the 12″ except that it’ll come out via the US artist’s Novel Sound imprint. It’s the latest in a string of EPs all rolled out with little or no promotion; in 2018 alone, we saw half a dozen, including Kissing / Only Good Things, Baseball, and Slander.

U-I “Duo Decim”

Last week, Seb Wildblood’s Church dropped its first release of the year, a VA titled Church Volumes 004.

Following on from 2016’s Church Volumes 003, the new VA features four tracks from label newcomers Igor B, Wasserfall & Vaage, Levon Revol, and U-I. Like much of Church’s catalog, Church Volumes 004 presents a range of deep grooves, from the aquatic hypnotism of Igor B’s “Turtle Cove” to Wasserfall & Vaage’s jazz-tinged “Namely You,” Levon Revol’s stripped-back “Analogue In Transit,” and the hazy beats of U-I‘s “Duo Decim.”

You can pick up Church Volumes 004 in full here, and in support of the release, Church has offered up U-I’s cut as today’s XLR8R download, available via WeTransfer below.

Due to issues regarding the GDPR, EU readers can download the track here.

Premiere: Hear a Slice of Machine-Driven Jazz From Ohm Hourani

Montreal-based electronic musician Ohm Hourani will drop his debut album, Jazz of the Machine, via his own Anoma Records.

Recorded and mixed in Montreal’s Phi Centre studio, Jazz of the Machine is an audacious project that employs a modular synthesizer to create its own sound patterns, which Hourani then modifies and fine-tunes while matching the patterns with rhythmic structures constructed with both modern and vintage rhythm machines. These initial threads were then used by several of Hourani’s talented collaborators as the basis for further musical explorations, resulting in a gorgeous album of considerable depth and experimentation—nothing on the album was looped and all recordings that made it to the final cut were the first takes recorded by the musicians (Rhodes, trumpet, bass, vocals).

The recording of the album was funded by the Canada Council for the Arts and in collaboration with the Phi Centre, which will also host an ambitious record launch that will bring together the ensemble of musicians who contributed to the elaboration of the album on February 21.

Ahead of the release on February 11, you can pre-ordered Jazz of the Machine here, with the album’s beautifully free-flowing opening cut, “Oasis in Heaven,” streaming via the player below.

Ryuichi Sakamoto’s Rare Solo Piano Record ‘BTTB’ Set for Re-Issue

A new 20th anniversary edition of Ryuichi Sakamoto’s BTTB, which stands for Back To The Basics, will be released on Milan Music on March 1, marking the first time the  album has been reissued since its original release. The reissue will be available on a deluxe double LP vinyl and CD.

A major commercial hit for the pioneering pianist, composer, and producer, the album is comprised entirely of original solo piano pieces, both delicate and frantic, with deep impressionist-inspired roots.

Currently a rare and hard-to-find album outside of Japan, the special 20th Anniversary Edition of BTTB includes remastered versions of all the tracks featured in the original release of the album, including the popular “Energy Flow,” as well as linear notes by Japanese author Haruki Murakami.

Last year, Milan Music released Async Remodels on vinyl, which reimagined Sakamoto’s 2017 critically-acclaimed studio album async.

BTTB LP lands March 1.

Farron “Cosmic Lies”

Italian label XCPT will continued its new Time Horizon series with the second chapter landing on February 25. This time we can expect five brain-dancing tunes crafted for late night use.

After his appearance on the first XCPT record, Andrea is back with his unmistakable shuffling drums and a heavy square bassline, followed by Anybody Anytime and TANS, who reveals his latest alias, The Sympathizer, with a neurotic electro track. On the flip are Farron and Kreggo, the latter with a perfect illustration of his hypnotic mid-low vision of breakbeat.

The vinyl-only EP is strictly limited to 250 hand-numbered copies.

Mastering is by Marco Pellegrino at Analogcut Mastering Studio, Berlin

A1. Andrea “MT”

A2. Anybody Anytime “Uncomfortable” (live mix)

Multi-Instrumentalists Benjamin Finger, James Plotkin, and Mia Zabelka Collaborate on New LP

Multi-instrumentalists Benjamin Finger, James Plotkin, and Mia Zabelka have joined forces for the experimental album Pleasure-Voltage

Releasing with Berlin-based label Karlrecords on February 15 on digital and vinyl formats, the experimental album stretches into the boundaries of electronic, ambient, psychedelia, and drone. It was born out of Benjamin Finger’s Oslo-based studio, infusing a singularly connected piece of work that’s cerebral in tonality and emotion. Across the release, Benjamin Finger performs on synthesizers, piano, field recordings, and electronic devices, with James Plotkin on electric guitar, and granular synthesis. Mia Zabelka adds E-violin and electronic devices, with the group also layering what’s dubbed as “alien instruments.”

Pleasure-Voltage was first premiered in performance at Rewire Festival 2018 and is now finally getting its release in studio form.

Norwegian visual artist Sverre Malling contributed original artwork for the cover and the album was mixed by James Plotkin.

Karlrecords has released an edited version of the opening track “Hostile Structures,” which you can stream below.
