Papercuts “John Brown”

Papercuts is the primary project of one Jason Quever, San Francisco-based musician and maker of breathy, emotional songs akin to those of Beach House, whom he’ll be touring with early in 2008. Quever’s Can’t Go Back was released on Gnomonsong in 2006, and he as since been seen touring with the likes of Grizzly Bear.

Papercuts – John Brown

Beach House to Tour with Papercuts in 2008

Beach House is all over the news these days, and with Devotion set to drop February 26 on Carpark, Alex Scally and Victoria Legrand prepare their arsenal of gauzy soundscapes and breathy melodies for the live setting.

Joining them on the tour will be Papercuts, a.k.a. San Francisco musician Jason Quever, whose Can’t Go Back album was released in 2006 on Gnomonsong. In addition to performing his own work during these shows, Quever will also play live with Scally and Legrand, as their drummer. Bring on the handkerchiefs and fluffy pastel dresses.

Jan Jelinek Releases Digital-Only Remix Album

While in Berlin last winter, celebrating the release of Tierbeobachtungen, Jan Jelinek invited musical colleagues to contribute to an upcoming remix version of the album. Nearly a year later, Hub Tierbeobachtungen has finally dropped, with ~scape founder Pole, Andrew Pekler, Thomas Fehlmann, and others reinterpreting the tracks for what should be a healthy mix of minimal noise and 4/4 techno.

The digital-only Hub Tierbeobachtungen is out now on iTunes, though only in Germany. Fans in other parts of the world will soon be able to buy it on Beatport, Bleep, partners of FineTunes, and at Kompkat’s MP3 store.

Meanwhile, Jelinek will make a few live appearances in early ’08, including one date with several artists who appear on Hub Tierbeobachtungen.

Liars Announce Tour with No Age

Now that the three members in Liars have released an album on Mute that blasted through all conventions of the puzzling art-rock genre and been around the U.S. supporting, uh, Interpol, they are ready for their own headlining tour, scheduled to begin early next year.

If the aforementioned tour with Interpol was, as Liars frontman Angus Andrew described, a “mind-blowing orgy of music and memories,” then this new set of dates, for which the band has invited L.A.-based rockers No Age along, should have both performers and audience members figuratively (or maybe even literally) bouncing off the walls and reminiscing for months to come. Says Andrew: “In all, I anticipate the whole tour being shambolic, psychotic, and historic. A winter wonderland of weirdo rockers.”

Check the band’s recently released fourth full-length, Liars, for inspiration, or go to the band’s site to download a free four-track EP. Nice!

Yeasayer Plans Tour

Heard Yeasayer‘s All Hour Cymbals yet? If not, immediately go to your digital download store/torrent site and download it. Those who are familiar with the Brooklyn, N.Y.-based outfit’s “Middle Eastern-Psych-Pop-Snap-Gospel” (as so eloquently described by the band itself) will be delighted to know they’re planning to visit numerous U.S. cities in early 2008, then follow those with an equally large number of European dates. These unabashed fans of David Byrne, Peter Gabriel, and Talking Heads will no doubt cart their mix of live instruments, synthesizers, and indecipherable chants to the stage, and it would be wise of you not to miss them.

Best Visual Artists of 2007

Gelitin
Really loving what Gelitin is doing! They are definitely crossing boundaries and getting all jiggy with it. Their pee-pee-sicle thing was totally gross in the most raddest way and that giant bunny was filled with lots of love.
Sam & Tury, Friends With You

Parra
Because he’s even better when you get to know him. His sense of humor is reflected in his artwork. Very loose and clean.
Alvaro Ilizarbe, Freegums

Akroe
Google his Montreal exhibition, Hooked, and see for yourself.
Teki Latex, TTC/Institubes

Pete Chung
He has designed for Supreme, Ubiq, Atmos, and has a new line coming out as an initiative to promote literacy called Book Club. He also raps, too. Maybe you have heard of him? Cool Calm Pete.
Ethan Holben, XLR8R

Cyprien Gaillard
It blows my mind that the rest of the art world hasn’t figured out this kid is bananas. Ripping films from the internet, smoking out landscapes, commenting on urban sprawl, gangs, human kinetic energy. Amazing.
Gordon Hull, Surface to Air

Kenya Hara
The man behind the branding and building of MUJI’s identity. Everyone interested in communication through graphic design should read his book, Designing Design.
Gamall Awad, Demon Days

Steven Harrington of National Forest
This guy makes me step up my design game probably more so than anyone else right now.
Mike Davis, Burlesque Design

Will Sweeney
He and Neck Face really haunted my eyes.
Pedro “Busy P” Winter, Ed Banger

Agnes Montgomery
The artwork on the recent batch of Panda Bear releases is amazing photo collages by Agnes Montgomery. It’s breathtaking work that recalls childhood innocence, the beauty of nature, and the mystical nature of humankind.
Lewis, Ninja Tune

Disrupt Foundation Bit

With Foundation Bit, Disrupter Jan Gleichmar has created a simple but brilliant gem, drenched in dub techniques, rich in narrative, and which plays up the tension inherent in Jamaican-derived music. On the one hand, there’s the familiar: the endlessly recycled basslines you know like an old friend from a thousand versions in a dozen genres; the 8-bit sound that recalls both ’80s dancehall and videogames, while still paying tribute to dub of both the ’70s (King Tubby) and the ’00s (Pole, Rhythm and Sound); the snippets from a dozen half-remembered sci-fi films. On the other hand, there’s Disrupt’s wild creativity, which re-combines the familiar in magical new ways, delivering on the promise that digi-dub always had, but never managed to quite nail. Many tunes were already available from Jahtari.org, but Werk has collected the best into a melancholy, beguiling, living, dubbing masterwork.

Rings “Mom Dance”

Nina Mehta, Kate Rosko, and Melissa Livaudais recently cleared the musical slate and decided to rename their band. Black Habit is the new record, from the newly-named band, formerly First Nation, now Rings. Put semantics aside though, and you will find an album packed with start-and-stop tribal rhythms, unique vocals, and a pleasant sprinkling of pop sounds. Photo by Kathryn Lo.
