Premiere: Hear a Menacing Cut From Wild Kid

Later this week, Brooklyn’s Wild Kid will return to new label 48k with Scream Tape.

The EP, a devastating six-track collection, was written in the midst of “a dense cloud of negative emotions” and inspired by the promise of “emerging healthier on the other side.” This raw, unbridled emotion is splattered across each of the tracks, which run the gamut from the searing anxiety of “Part 1, Dec-Jan” to the buried, muffled hope of “Escapist.” The EP was written in the track order it is presented over a 90-day period and heavily punctuated by sampled dialogue from Anime series Bleach.

In support of the release, Wild Kid has offered up a full stream of the EP’s hypercolor opening cut, “Part 1, Dec-Jan,” available via the player below.

You can pre-order Scream Tapehere.

Surgeon’s New Album is Inspired by Tibetan Book Of The Dead

Anthony Child (a.k.a Surgeon) will release a new album, Luminosity Device, this coming May.

Since the 1990s, Anthony Child has established himself as one of the most consistent and pivotal electronic music producers. His releases have made him not only a key contributor to the legacies of touchstone labels Tresor and Downwards, but also a prized collaborator; his British Murder Boys duo with Regis has capitalized on both producers’ natural intensity to great effect. Outside of techno, the work published under his own name has also shown Child to have a masterful knowledge of the intimate qualities of drone and atmospheric sound.

Surgeon’s new full-length, Luminosity Device, takes “Bardo Thödol”—the Tibetan Book of the Dead—as a starting point. It is intended as a deeply personal, bold confrontation of death and loss, and intends to show how immersive creative practices can build the resilience necessary to understand the death process as just another “intermediate state” in a continuum of eternal transition.

It’s Child’s first album under the Surgeon moniker since 2016’s From Farthest Known Objects.

In late spring / early summer, Surgeon will present an album tour with a brand new live show.

Fedoseev was born in Kudymkar, the administrative centre and town in the territory Komi-Permyak Okrug. He lives today a solitary existence, a 22-hour train ride away from the closest city of Moscow. His self-titled nine-track debut EP on Fatima Yamaha’s Magnetron Music acts as the vehicle to “escape the monotonous cycle of his hometown. “

Without using a single computer, each component of the EP was moulded from a live setting, with the recording taking place in the bedroom of fellow Gnoomes bandmate Alex Piankov, who also mixed the EP.

Nils Frahm, Rival Consoles, Kiasmos, and More Feature on Erased Tapes 10-Year LP

London’s Erased Tapes will round off a jubilant year of tenth-anniversary celebrations with a very special release, 1+1=X, which features exclusive music from every artist on the label—including Nils Frahm, Kiasmos, and A Winged Victory For The Sullen.

The release sees these Erased Tapes artists come together to make an album as a collective. Sharing the same space, instruments, and each others’ capabilities during a residency at Vox-Ton studio in Berlin, they recorded 20 songs to mark the label’s 10-year history. The three-LP box set, produced by label curator Robert Raths, is released on Record Store Day, April 21, 2018.

“It was important to create something communal and reflective of our time, to capture something of value using traditional recording techniques, experimenting and reacting to each other in real time, sharing the same space,” says Raths.

Between August 2016 and 2017, each artist arrived with a new composition or an improvisation to record at Vox-Ton. Run by Italian engineer Francesco Donadello—who has worked on many Erased Tapes recordings before including A Winged Victory For The Sullen, Michael Price, and Lubomyr Melnyk—it is one of the few studios left where it’s still possible to record fully analogue, isolated from the city noise and in a room that can fit a large ensemble. Reflective of the communal spirit, 1+1=X is the result of an ambitious undertaking: to create a singular record as a collective, not just a compilation of songs, that “celebrates the benefits of community over individuality and improvisation over rigorous planning.”

“As much as Erased Tapes probably wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for the digital age, we should also remind ourselves of what we are capable of without it,” adds Raths. “1+1=X is a testament to what can be achieved when we work together as a collective, which is more than the sum of what we can achieve as individuals.”

The majority of songs on this album feature contributions from multiple performers, whether it’s Nils Frahm duetting on the keys with Arthur Jeffes of Penguin Cafe, Kiasmos being joined by Högni and a string ensemble, Douglas Dare’s one-take “Darling” featuring Rival Consoles on synths, Masayoshi Fujita on vibes and Raths himself controlling the tremolo on his voice. Peter Broderick’s ‘The Perpetual Glow’ meanwhile, brings in a full big band and choir where everyone present, including the studio staff, was invited to grab an instrument and join in. Every song has a unique story and approach—with in-the-moment decisions and little accidents that could only come out of these kinds of circumstances where people work together in the same space, sparking off each other and their environment. Even Rival Consoles’ remix of Daniel Brandt’s “Blackpool Sands Forever” in the studio kitchen during recording breaks.

Designed in collaboration with Torsten Posselt at FELD, the 3-LP set is accompanied by a book of photographs documenting the recording process. It is housed in a bespoke, hand-assembled white box—with a recessed “X” that slides open to one side, and is limited to 1,000 copies worldwide.

Jon Hopkins Announces First Album in Five Years, Singularity

Jon Hopkins will release a new album, Singularity, on May 4—a follow-on to 2013’s Immunity. Along with news of Singularity, Hopkins has shared “Emerald Rush,” the first song to be released from the album, and an accompanying animated video, directed by Robert Hunter and Elliot Dear.

We’re told that the album is shaped by Hopkins’ experiences with meditation and trance states and that it “flows seamlessly from rugged techno to transcendent choral music, from solo acoustic piano to psychedelic ambient.” Singularity “explores the connectivity of the mind, sonics, and the natural world as it reflects the different psychological states Hopkins experienced while writing and recording,” the label explains—and it’s “intended to be listened to in one sitting, as a complete body of work.”

Although this is Hopkins’ first album in five years, the British producer has been busy since the release of Immunity with nonstop touring and projects including scoring the prestigious Barbican production of Hamlet, plus collaborations with Natasha Khan of Bat For Lashes and Bonobo. Prior to Immunity’s release, Hopkins was known as a producer and remixer of artists including David Lynch, Disclosure, Four Tet, Wild Beasts, and Purity Ring. Both Immunity and Diamond Mine (his collaboration with King Creosote) were nominated for the Mercury Prize, and his Monsters film score attracted an Ivor Novello nomination.
