Premiere: Hear a Trippy New Cut From Heartthrob

On January 19, Seth Troxler’s Play It Say It will kick off its 2018 schedule with a three-track EP from Heartthrob.

The EP, titled Nairobi Candles: Burning Bright, will be the first solo Heartthrob outing since 2015’s Haus Arrest EP. From the opening track’s off-kilter, funk-filled groove to the trippy synths of “Triangle” and wonky hypercolor vibe of “Nairobi Candles (Fuck Rachel Tension Mix,” the EP delivers three raw dancefloor weapons of varied intensity that will surely land in the bag of selectors the world over.

Ahead of the release later this week, you can stream “Nairobi Candles (Fuck Rachel Tension Mix” is full via the player below, with the EP available to pre-order here.

Podcast 525: DJ Sports

There’s little information available on Milán Zaks, the artist better known as DJ Sports. He’s most commonly known for his associations with Regelbau, the 11-strong Århus-based collective turned label—which we featured last year. Alongside friends and family, including brother Natal Zaks (a.k.a. Central), Sports has earned a small but extremely loyal following of international fans. In many ways, with its loosely-defined sound aesthetic and intelligent productions, Regelbau has put the Danish city of Århus on the house music map.

In terms of solo identity, Sports is the most widely acknowledged of the crew. He’s released on the collective’s various labels—namely Regelbau, Help, and No Hands— under his own name and collaboratively with others as part of Maizena and Hi Mount, while there’s also been a 2016 release on Yield. Yet his most important release landed via Firecracker Recordings last year with Modern Species, a tremendously stylish eight-track debut LP with nods to jungle, house, dub, and ambient. As a DJ, he’s touring with increasing frequency, establishing himself as a skilled selector whose sets embrace a fun-loving, playful vibe all the while blending breakbeat, house, techno, disco, and just about everything else. You can always expect some surprises.

And this weeks’ podcast is no different. Sports opted to not disclose the theme of the mix or his process of track selection, but you can expect a smooth journey full of his favourite disco, soul, and funk records, mostly arriving from the late ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s. It gets better and better on each listen.

Blutch ‘Dropin A Chrome’ (Red Rack’em Remix)

The next release on Barbecue comes in the shape of a four-track EP from Blutch. We’re told that the release sees the French producer show a “new side” of himself with” three bangers,” all of which draw influences from hip-hop, house, and soul for a “more powerful and electronic effect.”

On remix duties is Red Rack’em, who had this to say:

“My love of East Coast US hip-hop has always informed my more clubby productions so when Blutch sent me his raw MPC house EP and asked me to remix a track I immediately went for “Dropin A Chrome” and tried to inject some of the jazzy, golden years NYC vibes that massively influenced my musical tastes as a teenager. I was trying to reference acts like A Tribe Called Quest and Black Sheep without resorting to too many dude house cliches. This was the eighth remix (out of nine) I completed last year so my motto for this year is “just say no!”

Tracklisting:

A1. Blutch “Dropin A Chrome”
A2. Blutch “Ezra Was Not Right”
B1. Blutch “Last Dance”
B2. Blutch “Dropin A Chrome” (Red Rack’Em Remix)

Last Dance With Lolea EP will land on vinyl on January 26, with digital following on February 16. Meanwhile, you’ll find Red Rack’em’s remix available for download in full via the WeTransfer button below.

Nathan Fake Announces Sunder EP

Nathan Fake will release a brand new four-track 12”/digital EP Sunder via Ninja Tune on February 23.

The EP is described as “methodologically and sonically very different to Fake’s 2016 album Providence, which was characterised by crisp, widescreen sonics, and meticulous arrangements. In comparison, Sunder is “rougher, more urgent and raw, and definitively more beat-oriented while retaining the same warmth and emotive character.

“These four tracks are like snapshots captured in a single moment. They were all recorded on an old Marantz tape deck, Jupiter 6, broken Akai drum machine, and a Yamaha Reface DX,” explains Nathan.“Basically just hitting record and seeing what happened, not worrying about making mistakes etc. There are no post-edits; they are left completely as they were recorded—so they’re quite messy but I love that energy.” — Nathan Fake

Sunder EP will land on February 23, with the title track streaming in full above.

DeepChord and Fluxion Return as Transformations

After November’s Accumulate EP debut, Deepchord and Fluxion will return as Transformations in March with the Bona Fide EP—a two-track release.

K. Soublis (Fluxion) and Rod Modell (Deepchord) are well-known figures in the electronic music scene, both producing dub techno and ambient since the 1990s. Over the course of 20 years and dozens of releases, Modell and Soublis have explored the deepest sonic waters and presented numerous memorable signature works. The artists’ mutual respect for one another led them to initiate a discussion on recording and performing on a new project in 2014 and it took a couple of years to find a “musical place” to inhabit. The two started working on new material, throwing ideas to one another, which led them to start Transformations—the first release landing in November.

Bona Fide is said to “continue from where Accumulate left off.” We’re told to expect “two really engaging recordings that are not written with one specific environment in mind.”

Tracklisting

01. Bona Fide Pt.1
02. Bona Fide Pt.2

Bona Fide EP will land on March 2 on vinyl, with digital arriving on March 16 via Fluxion’s Vibrant Music. Meanwhile, you can steam “Bona Fide Pt.1” via the player below.

G3 ‘RH’

Next month, UK label Little Corner will drop its seventh release, a two-track single from label head G3 titled RH/This One Is Moon Grown II.

Like the releases preceding it—OSAMU KIMOTO’s TELEGRAPH HILL/RYUJIN and G3’s HarringtonRH/This One Is Moon Grown II draws inspiration from a range of UK styles and footwork, with the standout a-side track, “RH,” evidently produced for Teklife founder DJ Rashad. B-side cut, “This One Is Moon Grown II,” is a deeper and more introspective cut, built from shimmering synth lines and broken beats.

The single is set for official release next month, with “RH” available for free download via WeTransfer below.
