Premiere: Stream an Abrasive Electro Cut From Exterminador

The new release on Exterminador Records will be Exterminador’s Soldier Of Fortune EP.

The EP will be the third release on Exterminador Records, following on from Exterminador’s The Slave Gods EP and Ultradyne’s Antartica—released in 2016 and 2017, respectively. For the new EP, Exterminador has enlisted Detroit UR artist Abdul Qadim Haqq for the cover artwork, and musically, Soldier Of Fortune falls in line with the releases preceding it, presenting a raw and sophisticated collection of electro tracks that have already been picking up steam with DJs such as Helena Hauff, DJ Stingray, and Ron Morelli, among others.

You can pre-order the record here, with “Aboriginal Nations” streaming in full below.

Podcast 516: Kamran Sadeghi

Kamran Sadeghi is one of those wildly talented music producers that many of you have never heard of. The New York City-based artist—who divides his time between there and Berlin—is an elusive character, though one who is well respected and much appreciated by those familiar with his work. “Talking is at the very bottom of my list,” he said in one of his few interviews. “It’s one thing to talk about an idea or what you want and it’s a whole other world to make that happen together.”

As Sadeghi explains, he sits at the intersection of music and art. He involved himself in music around the age of 17, late by some standards, having spent his earlier years exploring visual art—mainly painting and drawing. An interest in jazz music blossomed through his teens, inspiring him to pursue a career as a jazz drummer, and no sooner was he releasing music as Son Of Rose—an alias for his early ambient works. Between 2006 and 2008, he released three full-length LPs.

And then he stopped.

Sadeghi’s initial flurry of output was brought to an end, followed by a seven-year hiatus during which he opted to focus on audio-video art. During this time, he released nothing musically, but his videos were selected to be showcased by WPAC’s Experimental Media Series curated by Richard Chartier and the Seoul International Computer Music Festival, among many others.

Only in 2014 did he begin releasing music once again, this time showcasing a more punchy sound—with sharp punctuations and brutal hooks and harmonies. His more recent releases have landed on Nervmusic Records, DeWalta‘s Meander, Cocoon, and, more recently Brouqade. It’s a growing collection of extremely high-quality productions—evidence if you needed any of just why he possesses the reputation that he does.

As a performing musician with Soundwalk Collective, he has played live with Patti Smith and Jesse Paris Smith for the project Killer Road. He has also performed live with synthesizers and field recordings on a project called Memoirs Of Disintegration with Nan Goldin and Samuel Rohrer. Sadeghi’s solo live performances have been played at festivals and venues like Robert Johnson, Rex Club, Resolute, Nordstern, ADE, CTM, and Resonate Festival. He has also performed at Arma17, Nuits Sonores, Volksbuhne, Centre Pompidou, and Panorama Bar/Berghain as a part of Soundwalk Collective.

Naturally, he doesn’t do podcasts, but here he’s made an exception, compiling a 60-minute recording of some of his favorite unreleased productions. It’s dark, intricate, and trippy, with an exceptional range of sound—a club-ready mix with a hypnotic groove, but one that works the mind and the body.

When and where did you record the mix?

I recorded the mix in my home studio pretty late at night around the early part of October.

How did you choose the tracks to include? Are they all your unreleased productions?

They’re all unreleased at the moment, which was one of the first ideas for choosing the tracks. From there, I started to select the ones that were kind of neglected. They’re like plants you know: the more you watch their behavior, the better you can care for them.

Was there a particular idea or mood you were looking to convey?

Not really, I just followed the mood that existed in each piece with another track that either carried the story over or created a nice counterpoint. Because I play live, I rarely get a chance to DJ, especially my own tracks.

What equipment did you record the mix on?

The tracks are all unreleased so I mixed it with my studio setup.

You’ve had a busy year for productions. What’s next on the horizon?

I have a pretty steady schedule of solo and collaborative releases on the horizon. I’m working on some new alias productions. One of which is an ambient album that I’m shopping around at the moment.

Jordan Rakei Drops Dancefloor-Ready Ninja Tune Edit

Jordan Rakei has dropped a new dancefloor-focused Ninja Tune edit.

When Jordan moved to London from Brisbane two years ago, he struck up a friendship with Bradley Zero (founder of the South London club night and record label Rhythm Section) who encouraged him to try his hand at making some uptempo, dancefloor-facing music. This was an entirely new venture for Jordan who had, until that point, been experimenting on a hip-hop/soul tip and honing his songwriting skills. He made four raw, instinctively soulful house tracks and, delighted with the results, Bradley released them on a Rhythm Section 12” titled Joy, Ease Lightness in December 2016. Jordan created a new moniker for this offshoot project: Dan Kye.

It was a natural step for Jordan to return to “Wallflower” in Dan Kye mode and re-imagine the title track. The result is a characteristically warm, bumpy, four-to-the-floor dub, which can be streamed in full below—and is available now via Ninja Tune.

Pessimist, Lucy, Matrixxman, and More Remix Perc

Perc will soon release two remix packages featuring reworks by Pessimist, Lucy, Matrixxman, and more names.

Earlier this year, Perc’s third album Bitter Music was released, pushing his sound to further extremes than ever before. It’s now set to return with two EPs of interpretations from a diverse selection of remixers, most of whom are new to Perc Trax—including Pessimist, Lucy, Matrixxman, Dax J, and more.

This first EP of remixes takes in Head Front Panel‘s constantly building, pulsating version of deep album moment “The Thought That Counts,” before Hodge’s take on “Chatter” and a broken version of album opener “Exit” by rising Blackest Ever Black artist Pessimist. Rounding off the EP is an experimental take on “I Just Can’t Win” by Dale Cornish.

The second EP opens up with Dax J who serves up a take on “Unelected.”On the B-side, Lucy layers shifting textures over popping kick drums for a version of “Wax Apple.” Closing these seven remixes is Matrixxman.”

Marco Shuttle Lines Up Oscillate EP

Marco Shuttle will soon release a new EP, Oscillate.

The two-tracker will be the 12th release on Eeerie, the Treviso-born artist’s label—and his first release since his Systhema LP landed on Spazio Disponibile earlier this year.

We’re told to expect a return to a more “groovy and floor-friendly” sound but one that maintains the Italian’s signature deep approach.

Oscillate EP will land on December 5, with clips streaming below.

Lucianblomkamp ‘Sick of What I Don’t Understand’

Last month, Lucianblomkamp released part one of his new album, Sick of What I Don’t Understand.

Dropping via Good Manners Records and Different Recordings, the Australian producer’s third album is themed around difficult transformations and self-realisation, essentially commenting on and documenting the processes Lucian went through to reach the next level in his musical ambitions. It’s documenting a journey of getting to a point where he feels he can express his whole self through his music, as he explains:

“What I get out of music and what I aim to get out of making music has varied a lot over the years. When I was younger, I had a much more black and white idea of the music I wanted to make and what purpose I wanted it to serve. While I was without a doubt living through the emotions heard on previous releases, there was a lot I wasn’t expressing artistically. I feel everyone creates art based on their surroundings and circumstances, so with that in mind, there was a lot of regret knowing that there was so much creatively left unsaid. Although, over time and through particular collaborations, I’ve begun to feel far more comfortable expressing other sides of myself. The 3 parts to ‘Sick of What I Don’t Understand’ essentially document this change over time. Part 1 is the beginning of this transition.”

In support of the release, Lucian has offered up the beautiful ambient title track as one of today’s XLR8R download, available via WeTransfer below.
