Alex & Digby Announce Debut LP

Alex Smith & Digby Smith (a.k.a. Alex & Digby) are set to release their debut LP, titled For My Process.

According to the Berlin-based pair, the 10-track LP was recorded during a “very personal” period and this is reflected throughout the release. Judging by the snippets, which are streamable below, the album explores the same minimal soundscapes as all their previous material.

Scheduled for late June release, the album lands at a particularly exciting time for the duo: having released their first material in 2014, the duo’s profile has continued only to grow, culminating in a series of high-profile gigs this summer—including Gottwood, Houghton, and Cocoon Ibiza.

For My Process LP is scheduled for June 19 release on the duo’s own Flash As A Rat label, with snippets streamable below.

Darse ‘Ruin’

Music lover before synth fanatic, Darse approached the DJing world at the age of 13 after “living an experience from which he felt the need to share it with the world.”

At the age of 16, he began to play techno music in Insomnia, one of the most famous clubs in Italy, but he realized very soon that he was more attracted by the world of production. He then left the clubbing world behind and started working for six years in his studio. He also developed a strong passion for other electronic music, building himself effects pedals, modules for his modular system, and a little instrument “similar to a piano.” His production processes also encompass sounds originating from nature and “everything that surrounds him.”

These cinematic atmospheres and dark pads are present in both his productions and his DJ sets. Indeed, the latter is “significantly influenced” by the sounds that he develops in his studio during the production stage.

He marked his debut in 2015 with his first release on the BeFree label, following this up with a remix of Love Over Entropy & Rudy—”an important springboard,” he says. After that, he started to collaborate with the Aquiver duo for the Amidst Many Faces EP released on Ardor Records, and then with Il Tempio Degli Illuminati on Ellora.

The next offering from Darse will be a more dancefloor-orientated track on the Afterlife’sRealm Of Consciousness Pt.II compilation, to be released on June 16.

Now, however, he is sharing “Ruin” as one today’s free downloads. The track “represents a life period where everything seemed to lead to failure and destruction.” It is described as “the victory of people that never back down in spite of everything,” and was produced using sounds of nature with the help of a fountain, a piece of paper, and Darse’s recorder.

Download a New Mix from Garo

Denislav Velev, better known as Garo to friends, is one of the key architects behind the blossoming Bulgarian music scene. Having founded the Red House parties in Sofia, Garo went on to hold a residency at Surrcasm, a party devoted to supporting and developing the best of Bulgarian underground talent and held other residencies which saw him support diverse international talent such as Ion Ludwig, Maayan Nidam, James Dean Brown, San Proper, Awanto3, and many more. It was a period which proved to be pivotal in defining the smooth, layered sound he exudes today.

Having outgrown the scene he helped to create, in 2013 Garo moved to Berlin lured by the endless possibilities the city could offer for his own personal and musical development. A true vinyl junkie, Garo is often to be found head buried in the bins of Berlin’s record stores and flea markets, digging for dusty gems and rare pearls. Such dedication and diligence towards unearthing obscure treasures allied to his own rich cultural heritage have endowed Garo with that much sought after ability to effortlessly and naturally blend classic and contemporary alike, across a wide range of genres spanning from mature house and Detroit techno to trippy experimental sounds. “Every track has its moment,” he says. “What matters most is the groove.”

Ahead of his performance at this year’s Meadows in the Mountains—where he has long been a resident—he has shared a recording, which is available to download below. Also on the lineup Youandewan, Valentino Kanzyani, Bruno Schmidt, and Shanti Celeste—to name just a few. This year’s edition takes place from June 9- 11 in the Rhodope Mountains, Bulgaria, with more information available here.

When and where was the mix recorded and could you tell us about the idea behind it?

As the proposition from Meadows in the Mountains to record this resident mix for XLR8R came at the last minute before flying to Sofia for my gig there in Studio EW, I said why not provide the live recording of my set. Unfortunately, due to some unforeseen technical issues with the recording, I decided to re-record (part of) it again once I got home.

How did you choose the records to play?

The records chose themselves in the moment, inspired by the company of dancing and smiling friends underneath the sun in the garden of Studio EW, full of love. I spent a good month beforehand at home in Berlin picking out the records to put in my bag, however.

Can you tell us a little about what Meadows in the Mountains means to you?

I have been lucky to have been involved as a Meadows resident since five years, almost from the beginning. It has been wonderful to see how it has grown in that time from a small event to an established festival talked of in small circles around the world. I was born and grew up in the Rhodopian mountains where the festival takes place so it has a very special place in my heart and I look forward to playing there every year and seeing so many familiar faces from previous years as well as many others who come to my home from all around the world. Every time I come back with great impatience, and this year promises to be bigger and better than ever. I hope this mix gets you in the mood to join us in the meadows, on the mountain, in the fresh air and Bulgarian sunshine.

Gas, Rabih Beaini, Lawrence English, and More Added to Semibreve 2017.

As announced, Semibreve is set to return to Braga, Portugal for its 7th edition between October 27 and 29, 2017.

Having already announced Deathprod, Valgeir Sigurðsson, Fis, and Kyoka, the organizers have now announced several new names—namely Gas, Rabih Beaini, Lawrence English, Laurie Spiegel, Beatriz Ferreyra, and Sabre.

Wolfgang Voigt’s legendary Gas project needs little introduction, and it will be presented live in a special audiovisual show focusing on the new record Narkopop.

Rabih Beaini is a lone voice in electronic music. Few people thread as challenging and intriguing live shows as him, where dark wave, krautrock, post everything, and techno all sit together in haunted hardware harmony. Unfamiliar and unmissable, the Lebanese artist’s productions sound as live and alive as anything he does in the club, making him in a class of one.

Lawrence English is composer, artist, and curator based in Australia. His recent albums Cruel Optimism and Wilderness Of Mirrors revel in “extreme dynamics and densities” and resolve into an “overriding aesthetic of harmonic distortion.” He is also one-half of HEXA with Jamie Stewart and enjoys ongoing collaborations with John Chantler (as Holy Family), Liz Harris (as Slow Walkers) and others.

Electronic pioneers Laurie Spiegel and Beatriz Ferreyra will also be part of the program. Beatriz Ferreyra is an Argentinian electro-acoustic composer. She worked at O.R.T.F. (French National Television), as a member of the Group of Musical Researches (G.R.M), under the leadership of Pierre Schaeffer (1963-70), and contributed to Pierre Schaeffer’s book “Traité des Objets Musicaux”(1966). For Semibreve, she will perform through a multichannel diffusion system.

Composer Laurie Spiegel’s music draws on her classical training, pre-classical flute, and folk banjo roots, but she is also a computer programmer, software designer, and visual and video artist and often-published theorist. She is known worldwide for her pioneering work with several early electronic and computer music systems. In Semibreve, Spiegel will present an installation of her new score for the video piece “Maya Deren: Prelude to Generating a Dream Palette by Peter Schmideg.”

Sabre is the Portuguese duo of Bruno Silva and Carlos Nascimento in sidereal rotation through house and techno conducted by the psych vision of the kösmiche and from some more spiritual free jazz.

Lineup

Deathprod
Valgeir Sigurðsson
Fis
Kyoka
Gas
Rabih Beaini
Lawrence English
Laurie Spiegel
Beatriz Ferreyra

More names will be announced soon.

This year’s edition takes place from October 27-29 in Braga, Portugal. More information, including tickets, can be found here.

Fortune West ‘Deep Forest’ (Rumtum Remix)

We last heard from Philidelphia PA-based producer Fortune West back in February when he offered up his stunning cut “The Ghost” as the day’s XLR8R download. That cut was pulled from hiss standout EP How Did We Get Here?, which was released on Abandon Building last month, fusing sun-soaked pop elements with more beat-driven downtempo and electronica.

The latest asset to arrive from the EP is Rumtum‘s remix of the closing track, “Deep Forrest.” Staying true to the track’s original feel-good form, Rumtum ups the energy with a more driving 4×4 rhythm and razor-sharp, shimmering synth lines for an interpretation that fits snuggly with the rest of the EP.

You can grab the remix via WeTransfer below, alongside the video for the original, with the full EP available here.

Highlights of the bill include headlining performances from Bob Moses, Kaytranada, and Bonobo, while artists from the likes of tINI, Leon Vynehall, Israeli progressive house icon Guy J, and Joel Mull will all perform at the infamous Woogie stage. New Barcelona Club Red58 Announces Off-Week Lineups

New Barcelona club Red58 has announced its schedule for this year’s Off-Week, running in parallel with Sónar Festival.

The week tends to be dominated by large-scale events—with the likes of IR at Monasterio, Innervisions, and Sónar itself among the headline-stealing shows. Tucked away off Plaća Catalunya, Red58 plunges deep underground and puts on a series of lineups worthy of any of its larger competitors.

First up, the clubs own label, Budare, are putting on a night curated by residents Moreon & Baffa. Topping the bill is Mark Ambrose, supported by SAKRO & Miguel Puente, Caceress, and Morgan Hyslop.

On Thursday, Soviet-inspired dub techno label Berg Audio take over with XLR8R favorite Andrey Pushkarev headlining. Diego_Krause, Traumer, Andre Kronert, & Code Deploy will also be playing.

On Friday, French label Yoyaku will present a showcase with Varhat, Janeret, Oshana and our pick for upcoming artists in 2016, Zendid.

Saturday, Barcelona-based record store and label Subwax brings S. A. M., Julian Perez, Moreon & Baffa, Romar, Jimi Subwax, Baldo, Marvu & Omar M to the club.

Closing out the weekend is another local affair with Kommuna taking over. Having hosted parties from Checkpoint to abandoned castles and known for their popular YouTube channel CMYK, they have invited eli verveine, Laurine, Domenico Rosa, CMYK, Omar M, and “a very, very special guest.” Their parties have a dedicated local following, making this a more than appropriate way to wind the weekend down.

Early bird tickets start at €10 and are available from XLR8R below.

Akkord Prep New EP for Houndstooth, Share Track

In July, Akkord will return to Houndstooth with their first original music since October 2015.

The two-track 12”, titled RCVR / XTMR, features all the Akkord hallmarks, namely brutal, grit-filled percussion, steely synths, and visceral sound design, a welcome return from the Manchester duo.

Alongside the release, the duo have also announced a string of dates, including their first London date in 19 months at The Pickle Factory, June 29, alongside Houndstooth artist Guy Andrews, as well as the Mary Anne Hobbs-curated Manchester International Festival on July 8 alongside Clark.

RCVR / XTMR will drop on 140gm vinyl on July 7 and can be pre-ordered here.

Peru’s Deltatron Shares Bass-Heavy Track From New Album

Terror Negro Records label head Deltatron is prepping the release of his new album, Ego Trip.

Featuring collaborations with Dave Nada, Lao, Turbo Sonidero, Alpha S, Principe Q, and DJ Krizis, Ego Trip began its life three years ago, before Deltatron attended the Tokyo edition of Redbull Music Academy. At the time, Deltatron was absorbed in cumbia and Peruvian rhythms, but following the academy, he infused the album with many different “ghetto beats” with a bass-heavy focus.

Alongside the album announcement, Deltatron has shared a stream of album cut “Causa,” a track featuring Chilean Discos Pegaos label head Alpha S. The pair met in Lima when Alpha S played Deltatron’s Versus party, before going on tour together to Bolivia. As you’ll hear below, the track is a mind-bending fusion of Latin rhythms from two rising artists in the scene.

You can stream “Causa” in full below, with more on Deltatron and Terror Negro Records here.
