Premiere: Hear a Track From Merveille & Crosson’s Latest Collaboration

On June 2, Cesar Merveille and Ryan Crosson will return to Visionquest with Dreamstate, their latest collaborative outing.

Visionquest founder and A&R Ryan Crosson and Parisian artist Cesar Merveille, as solo artists, have dropped releases on the likes of Cadenza, Desolat, Little Helpers, and MDRNTY, before launching their Merveille & Crosson project in 2011 with their debut album, DRM, on Visionquest. The album enjoyed wide-spread acclaim and spurred on a fruitful partnership that has also included a stunning Resident Advisorpodcast.

On Dreamstate, the pair present three intricately programmed cuts that aim straight at the dancefloor in their typically off-kilter style. From the deep and wonky title cut to the tripped-out glitches of “Time Constraints” and the driving groove of “Guns,” Dreamstate is a welcome return from the pair and a standout addition in Visionquest’s recent output.

Ahead of next week’s release, you can pre-order Dreamstate here, with “Guns” streaming in full via the player below.

Download a Trippy New Mix from Topper

Topper is an Italian DJ-producer and a real favorite among those on the XLR8R payroll. He had been so for some time, after several impressive performances in Berlin, but it was his set at Sunwaves 19—back in 2016—where he really blew us all away with a psychedelic set that maintained a loose and steady groove. In truth, we’ve been looking to feature him in the magazine ever since.

The Berlin-based DJ has called the German capital home since the early 2000s. Having relocated from Turin, Italy—where he grew up in a “hippie-kind of the environment,” listening to Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, and Pink Floyd—he discovered works of a more psychedelic natural through his father. It was during this period where he felt like he was “born for music,” he says.

Today, he’s a regular fixture at many of Berlin’s musical hotspots and resident at Club Der Visionaere. He has, he explains, been “experimenting with sounds” for much of the past 15 years, and has since discovered the “the hidden shapes of electronic music” while performing with several Berlin crews at several underground parties all around the city. He is also working hard in the studio preparing material for labels including Noisy Glance, Goodvibe Records, and Sleep is Commercial.

Today, however, Topper presents a 70-minute mix recorded from a recent six-hour summer stint at Berlin’s Club Der Visionaere. It’s dark, it’s trippy, and it’s groovy—all the elements that drew his work to us in the first place.

XLR8R is co-hosting a party with Cure Music and Melisma where Topper will be playing on June 16 in Barcelona, Spain. Also included in the lineup are Afriqua, Felipe Valenzuela, Alberto?, and more. More information and tickets can be found here.

Topper will also be playing for Toi Toi’s seventh anniversary at Off-Week alongside Ion Ludwig, Audio Werner, Jan Krueger, and more. More information and ticket can be found here

Novation Releases Circuit 1.5

Novation has released the latest Circuit firmware.

The new version of firmware, Version 1.5, brings three new features, including fractional gate (the gate length for a note no longer has to equal one step, it can be shorter or longer), synth patch preview (which allows you to audition synth patches in a similar way to drum preview), and the addition of being able to turn MIDI CC send and receive on or off to prevent any unwanted parameter changes.

You can check out the features in real time in the video below and find out more here.

Lithe ‘Fervent Gum’

On June 27, Melbourne-based label Enhancer Records will drop its sophomore release, Lithe‘s Fervent Gum.

Operating in a musical space that counts the likes of Cut Hands, The Haxan Cloak, HEALTH, and Forest Swords as contemporaries, Lithe makes powerful and carefully crafted sonic tapestries in which haunting melodies collide with splintered percussion and fragile textures.

Fervent Gum finds Lithe reflecting on “the journey of migrating from Townsville to Melbourne: arid Australian landscapes, sleepless nights in a freezing car, and visits from aboriginal spirits.” The resulting output is jarring, dissonant, abstract, and haunting, an emotive EP of sprawling complexities.

The EP will be available both digitally and as a limited-edition rubine red cassette of 100 units, with design from the Ukrainian designer Anton Leggo.

You can pre-order the release here, with the EP’s title track available as a download via WeTransfer below, along with the track’s video.

Premiere: Hear a Track from Shanti Celeste’s Stunning New EP

This Friday, Bristol imprint and record shop Idle Hands will release a new EP from one of the label’s core members, the quickly rising house producer Shanti Celeste.

Following on from a slew of impressive releases on labels like Secretsundaze, Peach Discs, and Future Times, this latest two-tracker sees Celeste return to her Bristol roots and Idle Hands, her hometown vinyl outlet and the platform for her 2014 standout record, Days Like This.

Make Time / Thoughts both showcases the evolution of Celeste’s production aesthetic, while also paying homage to her hometown’s signature sound. While “Make Time” sounds very familiar, incorporating the rough yet soothing deep house with which Celeste has become known, “Thoughts” sounds quite new; its hypnotizing synths and downtempo atmospherics are at once groovy, elegant, and one-of-a-kind.

Ahead of the release, you can pre-order Make Time / Thoughtshere, with “Thoughts” streaming in full via the player below.

Confidence Man ‘Bubblegum’ (Jono Ma More Cowbell Mix)

Earlier this year, Australian four-piece Confidence Man released their latest single, “Bubblegum” on Heavenly Recordings. It was a fittingly colorful track from an act that have built their name from energetic live sets and tracks full of an unbridled sense of fun.

Now, the band have unveiled a slow-burning remix from Jono Ma of Jagwar Ma. The remix follows Andrew Weatherall’s acid-soaked interpretation with a psychedelic mix of tripped-out percussion and body-moving bass, with a healthy dose of cowbell added in for good measure, as Jono Ma explains:

“The original has all the peaks and troughs of a late ’90s breaks banger a la Fatboy Slim. Lord Sabre had already acidified the funk on his version, so I felt it was my duty to focus in on the more subtle body rubbing elements of the track; namely the bongos, the bassline, and all those bubble pops. Annoyingly, I was late submitting the remix, it took me weeks to realise the track still needed more cowbell! I’m an eeeediot!”

You can download the remix via WeTransfer below.

Lapalux Shares Haunting Track from New LP

Lapalux has shared “Flickering,” a new track from his forthcoming third album for Brainfeeder, Ruinism.

“Flickering” features vocals by Icelandic singer Jófríður Ákadóttir (JFDR) of the bands Gangly, Pascal Pinon, and Samaris.

“Stu [Lapalux] and I got together in London when I had just run out the door in Iceland with my laptop and passport—and literally nothing else—so I was in a perfect state of chaos, freedom, and exhaustion,” says Jófríður. “The tune came together quite quickly, the only rule I got from Stu was that it couldn’t be about “love.” I really like the result, it has a perfect balance of that melancholia-but-you-still-keep-on-going feeling.”

Ruinism is set to be released worldwide on June 30, with the single available now.

Rampa Returns to Innervisions
