Len Faki Launches Label and Figure Sub-Label

Len Faki is set to a sub-label of his Figure imprint and a new label, namely Figure Jams and LF RMX.

Figure Jams, a sub-label, is “all about bringing together artists whose work the label has already been following closely and feels to have a joint artistic vision with.” The aim to bring together “artists from a wider network whose music engages in a special kind of dialogue and has a joint artistic vision.” Each record on will be shared by two producers whose music engage in this “special kind of dialogue.” The first release, scheduled for June 12, will be a split EP from Fabrizio Lapiana and Amotik. Then, on July 24, Abstract Division and Patrik Skoog will pair up for Figure Jams 002.

The second label, LF RMX, will focus on remixes. Faki, a Berghain resident, has developed quite a reputation for his edits and LF RMX will be an outlet for this material. “LF RMX is a non-profit platform, through which I want to share some of the edited tracks I made originally for playing in my DJ sets,” Faki says. It’ll launch on July 3 with two takes on DJ Bone’s “Black Patterns,” followed by remixes of Stephen Brown’s “Deep In” later in the summer. All such label earnings will be donated fully to Straßenkinder e.V., a Berlin organization that contributes to the care of homeless children and child poverty.

Tim Hecker and Max Cooper Rework Ben Lukas Boysen

Max Cooper and Tim Hecker have reworked Ben Lukas Boysen on his new EP Golden Times 1—out on Erased Tapes, June 30, 2017.

Championed by many, including BBC Radio DJ Mary Anne Hobbs, as the standout track from his most recent album Spells, Boysen’s Golden Times 1 forms the very heart of his new EP with the same name. Boysen entrusted none other than Max Cooper and Tim Hecker to shape and lure the title track plus second single “Nocturne 4” into two entirely separate territories, yet never drifting too far away from their original soundscapes.

With “Evensong,” the composer himself contributes a previously unreleased piece.

Spells was somewhat of a conceptual release for me, so the choice of the remixing artists and where the original material could be taken was very important. Max and Tim, both being role models for me ever since I began listening to their work and who delivered this incredible abstraction, I felt were spot on for this release and were dream candidates to work with. Their ability to re-direct and even re-invent the original material, partially subtle, and with an almost brutish sense of imagination, honors the originals deeply.”
— Ben Lukas Boysen

“Ben has been one of my most listened to artists of the past year or so. His last two albums, in particular, have meant a lot to me and provided me with focus when I needed it. So I was excited to have a chance to remix his work. I felt like I couldn’t improve on his idea, but what I could do was take what was the core for me, and expand it. It was just a matter of running with the feeling I got from his original, sticking with his melodic forms and original instrumentation, and letting the growing intensity continue along it’s established path to the only possible end point of total annihilation in chaos and distortion. My version is almost a continuation of his original if it was allowed to blossom into a percussive format, rather than a traditional remix.”
— Max Cooper

Marcel Dettmann to Release ‘Dekmantel Selectors’ Compilation

The next Dekmantel Selectors compilation will be compiled by Marcel Dettmann.

According to the Dutch label, the compilation promises to “showcase another side” of the Berlin-based DJ-producer. Even Dettmann—who is well-known for being one of the most celebrated techno artists nowadays—had to start his musical journey somewhere. Long before Dettmann ever held court at Berghain (or its predecessor, Ostgut), he was just another young boy in Eastern Germany, whose earliest encounters with capitalism involved spending every penny he could scrape together down at the local record shop. In those days, it wasn’t techno that got him excited, but new wave, post-punk, industrial and EBM acts like Front 242 and Depeche Mode was what shaped him. “It’s music from my childhood,” says Dettmann. “It’s still relevant and still inspires me.”

That inspiration can be heard across his Dekmantel Selectors release, as Dettmann has put together what he describes as a “pre-techno compilation.” Much like the previous Selectors editions—which have come from the likes of Young Marco and Motor City Drum Ensemble—the compilation is not a mix CD, but a collection of tracks hand-picked by Dettmann from his own vinyl archives. Freshly remastered and occasionally reworked or re-edited by Dettmann himself such as Cabaret Voltaire’s “Low Cool” and A Thunder Orchestra’s “Diabolical Gesture”—the songs here are “vintage gems,” but they also represent a very personal journey into Dettmann’s past. “It was a great opportunity to dig deeper into my own musical outlook,” he explains. “The tracks come from a time before I became a DJ.” Simply put, the songs here are some of the building blocks upon which he’s built an incredibly storied career, and now he’d like to entrust them to future generations.

Maud Geffray ‘Sick of Love’

Following her 2015 single, “1994,” Maud Geffray returns to Pan European Recordings today with her debut album, Polaar.

Since 2003, the French artist has been a part of the Scratch Massive, putting out well-received albums and singles on labels like Pschent and Record Makers that fuse electro stylings with synth pop and chunky beats. Geffray’s solo work follows suit with moody synth-driven compositions that range from hazy downtempo to lurching groove-led club cuts. Polaar is at once introspective and confrontational, an album that is as suited to home listening as it is for the dancefloor.

In support of the release, Geffray and the label have offered up deep album track “Sick of Love” as today’s XLR8R download, available via WeTransfer below.

Premiere: COLOM81AN Shares Affecting New Track and Video

Back at the end of last year, XLR8R debuted a track by mysterious act COLOM81AN, who were pushing what they referred to as NuMood, a dreamy and hypnotic style of beat-driven music that they pair with poignant visuals chopped from well-known films. This combination proved to resonate with our readers, landing COLOM81AN in the Top Downloads of September and also the year-end round up for 2016.

For their latest outing, COLOM81AN turn their hand to Sade’s classic “No Ordinary Love,” transforming it into a woozy, romantic slow burner complete with fitting visuals from Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet. The track, which also features the crooning vocals of regular collaborator Synthia, once again shows COLOM81AN’s deft hand at crafting warm, beat-driven cuts.

You can check out the video for “No Ordinary Love” in full via the player above, with the track also available to download via WeTransfer below.

Watch a Video on the History of Sampling

Earlier this year, Point Blank held an event at its London studio complex in collaboration with Brownswood Recordings and Ableton, with sampling as the main focus.

The event included a sampling competition, artist workshops, and a panel discussion, as well as a session with Chris Read from WhoSampled.com, who discussed, in detail, the history of sampling.

In the below video, Read explores the evolution of musical genres, from jazz and rock to hip-hop and house, and examines how each of these genres has borrowed from one another right the way up to where we are today, whilst giving examples of contemporary musicians whose work has heavily relied on sampling.

You can find more about Point Blank and its course here.

Stream a New Mix from Sonja Moonear

Bjørn Torske and Prins Thomas Team Up for LP

Bjørn Torske and Prins Thomas, have announced a collaborative LP, titled Square One.

Both artists have been central figures in the Norwegian electronic music scene for many years, and have known each other for more than two decades—but this is the first time one of their collaborations has been released to the masses.

The LP stemmed from a plan for Torske to remix Thomas’ album Principe Del Norte, but it morphed into the idea of a collaborative album between the two at the suggestion of Smalltown’s Joakim Haugland. “We agreed to this, and went in [the studio] with no plan and just recorded by pure fancy,” says Torske.
