Robert Hood Announces ‘Paradygm Shift’ Album on Dekmantel

Robert Hood will release a new album on Dekmantel—his first since 2012.

Paradygm Shift serves as a milestone for the Dutch imprint as it marks their 50th release. It is, according to the label, “a return to the distinguished style that defined Hood’s music in the early ’90s, and is the culmination of a three EP series. The label describes it as a “mature brother to his classic Minimal Nation, highlighting his more evolved, technical craftsmanship.”

“The idea behind it is just a shift in our focus. We can become complacent; we are so comfortable with our surroundings. I think this is the time for electronic music to find a new mindset”, says Hood about his concept. “I felt it was necessary to reiterate as an electronic music artist who is bringing minimalism back in the forefront, and not to get lost in the melody. I want to get back to the simple repetitive programming that I’m known for, and to me, it was returning to that and shifting the listeners’ focus.”

Weekly Selections: Air Festival 2017, Desert Hearts, Job Jobse at Spotlight

This weekend marks the third edition of Air Festival—one of the newer and more exciting destination festivals that have started to pop up in Asia in recent years. The event will run for three full days this weekend, and will take over a pristine, sun-soaked spot on the island of Gili Air in Indonesia complete with white sandy beaches and crystal clear surf. The lineup includes a wide range of established and rising selectors, with the clear highlights being Rampa of Keinemusik, Audio Werner, and Brouqade founder Dana Ruh. Dave Aju of Circus Company affiliation will also perform at the festival, along with a host of local and international talent from the likes of Peak & Swift, Tiago Oudman, Mimi Love, and many more. For more information and tickets, click here.

Desert Hearts, the now (in)famous West Coast party crew and record label, will hold their spring festival this weekend, returning to Los Coyotes Indian Reservation in Southern California after a yearlong hiatus. As usual, the festival is set to create a uniquely hedonistic and communal vibe by offering almost 80 hours of nonstop house and techno at just one stage. This year, highlights of the lineup include DJ sets from the rising All Day I Dream contributor Öona Dahl (check out the premiere of the title track from her latest EP via XLR8R here), DEEP LA founder Marques Wyatt, Hot Creations mainstay Detlef, and legendary west coast selector Doc Martin. The sunrise DJ set from TÂCHES and the live performance from Berlin-based producer Monolink should also impress. The event is completely sold out, but more information can be found here.

And on Friday night in Los Angeles, renowned queer techno series Spotlight will return to a TBA warehouse location for an evening of quality underground sounds and debauchery. For this weekend’s edition, organizers have locked in the Amsterdam-based De School resident Job Jobse for headlining duties. Chris Cruse, Spotlight’s founder, will play an opening set at the party, which will last until 6AM or later. As usual, no information about Spotlight can be found anywhere online, and the RSVP is already full.

TenGrams ‘Please, wash my brain again’

Tomorrow, N.O.I.A. Records will release Outerspace Blues, an eight track album from Italian duo TenGrams.

TenGrams is made up of brothers Alessandro and Davide Piatto, two artists who collectively share a deep history with dance music—Davide runs the N.O.I.A. label and was a part of one of Italy’s first live electronic acts Klein + M.B.O. Alessandro and Davide recorded Outerspace Blues between the end of 2015 and the summer of 2016 on vintage synths, drum machines, and samplers, with a “no rules or music trends” policy.

With influences such as sci-fi movies, krautrock, and techno, Outerspace Blues is a cosmic collection of tracks that run the gamut from ambient to electro, house, and techno, with a journey-like feeling running throughout.

In support of the album, N.O.I.A. Records has offered up LP cut “Please, wash my brain again” as today’s XLR8R download, available via WeTransfer below. With its stunning synth lines and chunky low-end, it’s a track ripe for the dancefloor.

Outerspace Blues is out tomorrow, March 31.

Please, wash my brain again

Premiere: Hear Minimal Violence’s Remix of Space Dimension Controller

Tomorrow, R&S Records will welcome back Jack Hamill to its fold with his new Space Dimension Controller EP, EXOSTACK .

EXOSTACK follows a handful of EPs on Royal Oak and an album on Ninja Tune, and will be Hamill’s first EP for R&S since 2013’s Welcome To The Microsector-50—it also marks a return to the funk-filled, astro-boogie off which he built the Space Dimension Controller moniker.

Alongside the two originals, the EP features a remix from Swedish artist Kornel Kovacs, who delivers a chunky house rework with jacking drums and shimmering chords. As a digital bonus, Vancouver duo Minimal Violence supplies a stripped-back tribalistic take on “SDC,” with gritty, rolling drums and soaring strings providing the peak-time energy.

Ahead of tomorrow’s release, you can pre-order EXOSTACK via Bandcamp, with Minimal Violence’s remix streaming in full below.

Melisma and Cure Music Team Up for Off Week

Melisma and Cure Music will present a collaborative event at this year’s Off Week in Barcelona on Friday, June 16.

Melisma is run by Dani Casarano while Momo Trosman runs Cure. Felipe Valenzuela is involved in both projects.

The lineup, below, consists of those label heads and many of those affiliated with the labels, including Afriqua and Momo Trosman, both of whom have featured on XLR8R recently.

Afriqua
Topper
Alberto?
Giuliano Lomonte
Momo Trosman
Felipe Valenzuela
Dani Casarano
Andreazza (Warm Up)

The venue for the event is Club Belafonte, a new club located in the city center.

More information, including tickets, can be found here, with a Q&A with the label founders below.

After doing separate parties for previous Sónar seasons, you guys are teaming up this year. Why the change?

We usually try to make collaborations with other labels or collectives for Sónar time. The premise is always to meet with those who share the same perspectives on music. It’s just about bringing together friends with similar concepts. And, of course, Sónar is always interesting because most of our friends and artists from the scene are there.

Belafonte is a new venue in Barcelona. Can you tell us more about it?

There are various activities linked to the club, even of different musical styles. The owners are very cool, we had a long relation with them since Chile and the Golden times, so we feel at home. Is a very friendly vibe. The capacity is for 400 max.

What’s happening with Cure and Melisma. Any big announcements coming up?

Cure music is preparing the fourth release that will be out in a couple of months. The main track comes from the American duo Omni A.M. It’s a remaster from one of his hidden underground classics from the beginning of 2000. This is accompanied by two remixes, one from the collaboration between Mike Shannon and DeWalta; the second one comes from Spacetravel.

Melisma is mainly launching music from the label owners. The next upcoming release is a double maxi collaboration between Felipe Valenzuela And Dani Casarano.

And there’s some upcoming info and surprises for Sónar from both labels together. We will talk about that later on.

Ninja Tune Preps Forest Swords LP

Forest Swords, (a.k.a Merseyside-based producer Matthew Barnes) will soon return with a new full-length record on Ninja Tune.

Compassion is the follow up to 2013’s debut Engravings, and lands after the label announced they had signed a new track, “The Highest Flood,” earlier this month.

The release is 10 tracks long and will be followed by a set of projects across multiple mediums by Forest Swords’ own Dense Truth, a new experimental studio and record label, including a series of music videos.

“Like many, with all that’s been going on since I started making the record, I’ve struggled to see any kind of light at the end of the tunnel,” says Barnes, “so I realised there’s some sort of power in trying to create our own instead. I’m inspired by the ways we’re communicating now, for better or worse, and thinking about new channels we can distribute ideas. The idea of looking for flexible future ways of expression and language, that bends to our needs quicker, really excites me”.

Barnes launched the record with a unique experiment in new ways to disseminate music, personally sending album tracks through messaging app WhatsApp to anyone who asked.

04. Exalter
05. Border Margin Barrier

Stroboscopic Artefacts Welcomes Lady Starlight

Lady Starlight will debut on Lucy‘s Stroboscopic Artefacts with the Untitled EP.

The American DJ and performance artist is known to employ DJ tools, audio hardware, and her own body in live exhibitions and collaborations. Recently, she’s been performing as an opener for Lady Gaga’s massive “ArtRave” tour and also in live collaborations with artists like such as Surgeon, Regis and Truss. Her first record, Untitled, “delivers her passion for the essentials of techno,” says the label.

The label describes the release as “hard-hard-hitting and authoritative,” though “full of smoothly subtle transitions, and their overall heaviness and density actually helps the spirit and imagination to soar freely.”

Untitled is scheduled for May 19 release.

Exercise One Prep Palinoia EP

Exercise One, no strangers to the world of techno, will release a new EP for Eric Cloutier‘s Palinoia imprint.

The label describes the four-tracker as “grounded in the history of techno yet looking towards the future.” These hardware-based jam sessions “were fleshed out to provide not only peak-time floor workouts but are equal parts heady grooves.”

Tracklisting

01. Heptagon
02. Prism
03. Nitrogen
04. Thirty Fou

Prism EP is scheduled for May 27 release, with clips streamable below.

Premiere: Stream a Cut from Alejandro Mosso’s Hivern Discs Debut

After a decade releasing club-savvy music, Argentinian producer Alejandro Mosso will debut on John Talabot’s Hivern Discs with Gaia, a double 12″.

According to Mosso, the release is the best expression of his move towards a richer, “more profound” sound. Gaia is still conceived with the dancefloor in mind, and many of the tracks have bee staples in John Talabot’s sets as well as in those of Hivern’s core members. But Mosso explains that it is music that shows a desire for telling stories: “I prefer to refer to them as songs instead of tracks, as they all have a certain narrative,” he says.

In advance of the EP’s April 7 release, “Dryads” is streamable in full below.

Tracklisting:

A1. Rhea
A2. Uranus
B1. Ares
C1. Naiads
