Across 14 beat-driven tracks, Woland takes the listener on a deep, and at times dark, journey that touches on everything from futuristic dub to dusty beats, outsider techno, and jungle. Close Reading is a brilliantly composed nod to Woland’s diverse influences, one that opens up more and more with each listen.

Close Readingdropped on Friday on limited cassette, housed in silk screen-printed sleeve, as well as a digital download. In support of the release, Astral Black has offered up LP cut “0141-S.F.S.G” as today’s XLR8R download, available via WeTransfer below.

Premiere: Hear a Stunning, Synth-Heavy Cut from Jex Opolis

On April 14, Jex Opolis will release his debut album, Ravines, on his own Good Timin’ imprint.

Ravines follows a decade of dancefloor singles—all but one of which have dropped via Good Timin’—and was conceived at Jex’s home studio in Brooklyn, with live instrumentation added at NYC’s famed Oscilloscope Laboratories alongside engineers Andre Kelman (Phoenix, the Beastie Boys) and CZ Wang (Mood Hut). The album also finds Jex exploring melody and more pop-focused structures, as he explains: “Working on this record was about redefining my craft. Like a kid exploring the forest—building new structures, finding new textures. Having fun but also spooking yourself a little.”

Like its cover artwork by Elvis Barlow-Smith, Ravines is a multi-colored collection of warped pop cuts that interpret everything from disco to jazz, funk, and house.

Ahead of the April 14 release, you can pre-order Ravines via the Good Timin’ Bandcamp page, with LP cut “Après-MIDI” streaming in full via the player below.

Pivovar Shares Track from New EP

At the end of last week, Queens-based producer Pivovar released his latest EP, Home, on King Deluxe.

Home follows a string of standout releases on King Deluxe, outings from Your Gay Thoughts, Evy Jane, Flatland Sound Studio, and Pivovar’s genre-hopping collaboration with Jacob 2-2. Like his previous release, Home is an EP that dances through textures and beats; from the deep futurism of opening cut, “Reliquary,” to the footwork-inspired “Render From Memory” and the deep grooves of the EP’s title track, it’s a release that, although coherent, shows that Pivovar has a deft touch no matter what style he takes too.

You can purchase home now via the King Deluxe Bandcamp page, with “Reliquary” streaming in full via the player below.

Floating Points Soundtracks Short Film

Sam Shepherd (a.k.a Floating Points) has soundtracked a 27-minute film, titled Reflections—Mojave Desert.

According to reports, the film, which was directed by Anna Diaz Ortuño, features all-new material from the London-based DJ producers. All five tracks were recorded by Shepherd and his band in the Mojave Desert as they prepared for their 2016 tour of the US.

“Whilst we were out playing and exploring the area around us—the sound reflecting from the rocks, the sound of the wind between them, complete stillness at night and packs of roaming coyotes in the distance, it became apparent that we could use this as its own unique recording environment,” Shepherd explains.

The release is also said to be the first in a series of planned Floating Points releases made in different spots around the globe.

Reflections—Mojave Desert is scheduled for June 30 release via David Byrne’s Luaka Bop and Shepherd’s own Pluto label, as both a short film and a soundtrack.
