Half Nelson ‘Temptation’

London’s Breaker Breaker label continues to build steam behind releases from RGL and the rapidly ascending Ross From Friends with a fresh 12” courtesy of Half Nelson.

Utilizing a meld of hardware, old tape recorders, and original instrumentation, the Bristol-based producer readies the inaugural release on this newly formed alias, titled First Step. According to the label, the First Step EP “smothers burly drums with woozy sampling that work together to build a trippy, floor-ready sound.”

Deena Abdelwahed ‘Ena Essbab’

Tunisian experimentalist Deena Abdelwahed creates a singular strain of music built from traditional, mutated rhythms and hypnotic sound design. To a lot of our readers, she’ll be a new name, but even though she is relatively new to the scene, her music has been supported and praised by some of experimental music’s key artists, including Acid Arab, Morphosis, Bachar Mar-Khalifé, and Débruit; and once you hear Abdelwahed’s new release on InFiné, titled Klabb, you’ll soon realize why.

Across four tracks, Klabb pushes a varied and forward-thinking sound, one that aims to deliver a message with its sonics. Opening cut, “Jalel Brick Rrumi,” for example, uses vocal samples taken from Tunisian activist Jalel Brick to convey a reference to Tunisian youth who have had to learn to use new lexical techniques to overcome everyday frustrations of the system; whereas, “Ena Essbab” (which means ‘Because of me’ in English) is inspired and composed for the queer community.

Alongside the release of the album, Abdelwahed will be playing alongside Alessandro Adriani, Natalia Escobar, Dis Fig, Illum Sphere, and Laura Clock at the opening of Berghain’s new floor named Säule—meaning “pillar” in German.

In support of the EP, InFiné has offered up “Ena Essbab” as today’s XLR8R download, available via WeTransfer below.

You can pick up Klabb via Infiné’s Bandcamp page.

Weekly Selections: Rapture Miami, Rhythm Rapport with Losoul, M.A.N.D.Y. at Dialogue

Thursday marks the premiere edition of Rapture Electronic Music Festival. The one-day event–arguably the most exciting new party to pop up among the deluge of electronic music happenings during Miami Music Week and Winter Music Conference–will take over a protected and serene section of Virginia Key Beach near Miami. Rapture’s inaugural event will feature four separate beachside music stages, state-of-the-art sound, and an incredible selection of artists to choose from. Highlights of Rapture’s musical offerings include DJ sets from American masters Carl Craig and Dennis Ferrer, live performances from French production whiz Rodriguez Jr. and M-nus affiliate Gaiser, and a rare stateside appearance for Eastenderz boss East End Dubs. Minimal gurus Petre Inspirescu, Rhadoo, and tINI will also perform, among many other top-notch selectors. Although the event is expected to sell out, a very limited number of passes are still available for purchase; get them here. More information on Rapture can be found at the festival’s Facebook page.

On Saturday night in Los Angeles, underground promoter Rhythm Rapport will return following the success of their party last month with Melliflow label head Vera. For this month’s edition, organizers have recruited minimal house expert and Playhouse mainstay Losoul for a headlining DJ set at a proper TBA warehouse location. Also on the bill is Euphoria Records contributor Adam Collins, and Amoeba Music’s Jordan Heyser. Presale tickets are available by going here.

Veteran party crew Dialogue will also return to LA’s warehouse district on Saturday night. For this weekend’s event, Dialogue has booked Get Physical bosses and this week’s XLR8R podcast contributors Philipp Jung and Patrick Bodmer (a.k.a M.A.N.D.Y.). The world renowned house and techno duo will play a special extended set at the party in celebration of the release of their album, Double Fantasy. Dialogue’s own MD have been locked in for support. Tickets for the party can be found here.

Stream the New Album from David Douglas in Full

On March 24, Atomnation will release the sophomore album from David Douglas, titled Spectators of the Universe.

The new album from the Dutch producer and video director follows on from 2014’s Moon Observations LP, continuing his multi-colored, polyrhythmic journeys into sound. The album plays with “psychedelic and experimental elements, weaving organic textures alongside more robotic landscapes,” while also retaining his knack for pop-infused hooks.

Listeners may be familiar with Douglas’ intriguing and eclectic sound world from last year’s single “Lucine,” a cut from the forthcoming LP, which was also followed by a stunning reinterpretation by Alex Smoke.

Ahead of the release later this week, which you can pre-order here, you can stream the album in full via the player below.

Niels Broos ‘HAL’ (feat. Jameszoo)

Red Bull Music Academy alum and keyboardist Niels Broos released the Niels Broos EP last month on LA-based imprint Alpha Pup. The release is Broos’ first solo title and collects music recorded over the last two years. The writing process began in a transitional period of his life after relocating to the city of Utrecht, with Brainfeeder artist Jameszoo joining him for the recordings—adding to the body of work they both laid out on Jameszoo’s debut album, Fool.

To celebrate the release, and to give you an idea of the genius of their work, Alpha Pup has offered up “HAL,” a mind-bending cut featuring Jameszoo. The recording process of the track is as singular as the music itself, as Broos explains:

“Finishing “HAL” took me the longest. I think I made over 20 versions of it. I had this idea of making a tune that consists of one big buildup, with a lot of carefully placed layers of sound that build up really slowly throughout the track. Around the time I was working on this one, Mitchel (Jameszoo) and I did a long modular recording session. He helped set up this insane studio in his hometown in Den Bosch, which is filled with old analog radio testing equipment. It’s based in an old synagogue, that has been turned into a venue. Mitchel and his friend Rikkert also host the yearly electronic music festival FAQ there. First of all, it’s an incredible sight. Picture a full wall of NASA looking equipment with units you’ve never seen in any modular Instagram video. And it sounds amazing. It’s able to make frequencies you won’t even hear and it scares you sometimes when working on it because it can get really gnarly on the ears. But at the same time, the sound is so incredibly rich and warm you find yourself listening to the weirdest noises for hours.

Mitchel cooked up some nice patches on it and it resulted in a four-hour long recording. It took me some time to pick out the sounds for the track but it was an almost serene experience listening to the whole recording a countless amount of times. The modular formed a completely new layer on the track and after that, the track finally felt near complete. The biggest challenge in making this tune was also to keep it open and not make it too busy arrangement wise. I had to really resist the act of playing a solo or another theme on the last part. It turned out to be my favorite track on the EP. It needs some time to grow on you, though. Listening on a good pair of headphones or a really great sound system is recommended. “

You can download “HAL” (feat. Jameszoo) via WeTransfer below, with the EP available to purchase in full via Alpha Pup’s Bandcamp page.
