Learn How to Use a Modular Synth Using Arturia Modular V

With the introduction of fixed-architecture synths, modular synthesizers experienced a decline in the ’80s—modular synthesizers had been commercially manufactured over ten years before by the legendary Bob Moog and Don Bulcha, who ceased production in 1981 and 1984—however, this made them much more sought after pieces of gear years later. Eventually, companies like Modcan and Doepfer introduced new modular systems in the ’90s, beginning a resurgence in popularity for modular synthesis—this can also be attributed to it becoming much more affordable.

In modular synthesizers, modules controlling different parameters can be moved around and mounted in endless combinations. You can arrange amps, envelopes, LFOs, filters, effects and more to your liking, experimenting with different combinations giving you a truly unique sound.

In the latest tutorial video from Point Blank, you can learn the basics of modular synthesis and get an inside look at the Arturia Modular V, an emulation of the Moog Modular—the synth that started it all.

Gypsy Mamba ‘Stale Crumbs’ (feat. Makan Negahban)

Last month, Alpha Pup released Magnetic Syndromes, the stunning sophomore record from California artist Gypsy Mamba. The new LP follows last year’s Da Feenux, Gypsy Mamba’s debut on Alpha Pup, with a collection of typically raw and uncompromising cuts.

Magnetic Syndromes is the sonic description of Gypsy Mamba’s life, and all life for that matter, full of unpredictable changes, inner conflicts, and the fight between the darkness and the light. With guest spots from Makan of Bür Gür and Kelley Mak, the LP showcases a more complex side to Gypsy Mamba’s sound, fusing frenetic cuts with more subdued outings in a flowing, complete journey.

You can pick up Magnetic Syndromes now via the Alpha Pup Bandcamp page, with LP cut “Stale Crumbs” downloadable via WeTransfer below.

On the solo front, Lucretio—who is the founder of Machines State and co-founder of Restoration Records, Appointment, Parassela, and Muscle Records—released two records last year on Crime City Disco (Classiq Ep) and Picnic34 (Tempesta Di Valvole), and his first of 2017, The Lisbon Treaty, will launch new vinyl-only imprint Paramount City Records with four varied, analog-driven cuts.

Stream a Track from Sigha’s Upcoming Album

Later this month, Token will release Metabolism, the sophomore full-length from James Shaw (a.k.a. Sigha).

Metabolism will be Shaw’s third release on Token—the two previous releases were singles titled Christ Figures and Our Father—and follows on from outings by Tadeo, Antigone, Inigo Kennedy, Sterac, and Ø[Phase].

The LP presents a production aesthetic and sound that Shaw has been developing over the last few years, one that marries powerful, cerebral rhythms with abstract and highly refined synth work. Each sound occupies its own space on Metabolism; the elements are meticulously placed but seem to take on a life of their own, twisting and turning over each other in dynamic streams. Shaw’s sound design is an undoubtable key to the power of this release and upon each listen, his sonic world only seems deepen.

Ahead of the February 24 release, you can stream LP cut “Black Massing” in full below.

Premiere: Hear a New Track from Chasindub

Late this month, Phonogramme will release Dan Gheorge’s (a.k.a. Chasindub) Still Here EP.

Gheorge’s latest four-tracker follows in the vein of the sound he has been perfecting over the years, one that touches on deep house, breaks, electro, and techno—think airy pads, groove-led low ends, and hooky synths and vocal chops.

Laurent Garnier Readies New EP

French legend Laurent Garnier has some new music on the way—namely the two track Tribute EP on Kompakt Extra.

The story behind the release, in Garnier’s words, is as follows:

“One Saturday in February I was having an amazing night playing at Oval Space in London. In the middle of my set, I dropped “1-4 Doctor C’est Chouette.” A fan came up to the DJ booth to ask me what I was playing. When I told him it was one of my new tracks, he replied—to my surprise—’There’s so much melancholy in this track, what were you thinking about when you made it?’ His question struck a deep chord: he had understood what I was feeling when I made the track—isn’t that what music is all about? But did I really have to tell him the story? It wasn’t the place or the time to get into a deep conversation, so I simply smiled at him to thank him for his enthusiasm.

“There are times in our lives when we should dedicate a little something to people or places that are important to us. This is what this record is all about: just to say I love you, I miss you or just simply thank you.”

Tracklisting:

A1. 1-4 Doctor C’est Chouette
B. From the Crypt to the Astrofloor

Tribute EP is scheduled for April 14 release on Kompakt Extra, with a preview available here.
