Prins Thomas Principe Del Norte Remixed

Prins Thomas has been on a run as of late, to put it mildly. In the past two and a half years, he’s unleashed four high-profile and well-received albums: 2014 saw the Rainbow Disco Club Vol. 1 ‎mix on Endless Flight and Prins Thomas III on his own Full Pupp; the sprawling Paradise Goulash set came out on Eskimo Recordings in 2015; and an LP of (mostly) ambient, kosmische-tinged workouts, Principe Del Norte, popped up on Smalltown Supersound in the waning days of this past winter. So how do you try and top that?

In the man born Thomas Moen Hermansen’s case, you don’t—you enlist an A-list array of electronic-music notables—Hieroglyphic Being, Ricardo Villalobos, Gerd Janson, the Orb, Young Marco and I:Cube among them—to do the heavy listing for you. (Psyche-rock combo Dungen is an outlier among the remixers, while Thomas himself contributes one rework and three all-new originals.) While Principe Del Norte Remixed probably won’t erase the memory of its predecessor’s slow-drift, dim-the-lights charms, it’s a notable addition to Thomas’s ongoing string of successes.

As with any remix project, it’s tempting to perform a side-by-side, track-by-track comparison, determining just much of the originals’ DNA is still intact, or how much new information was gene-spliced into the tune. Take the Gerd Janson remix of “A1,” for instance (you’ll recall Principe Del Norte’s prosaic nomenclature): the Running Back label boss takes Thomas’s oscillating synth patterns, strips them down, then adds a staccato bassline and a percolating buoyancy—basically transforming the cut into an sturdy and emotive house tune. On the other hand, aural experimentalist Sun Araw reconstructs the gentle bass throbs, delicate fret work and pastoral feel of “B” into a different, oddly affecting beast entirely. The low-end pulses now stumble rather than pulse; the guitar now appears as ruptured twangs; a circus of blurts and cascades alter its essence completely.

But it’s best to appreciate these interpretations as stand-alone pieces. Hieroglyphic Being contributes a pair of pressurized versions of “D”: his first features what sounds like a pops orchestra warming up for a big show as a freight train speeds nearby and clattering percussion keeps time, while his Beat mix drops the orchestral warm-ups for some frenzied looping of the orchestra itself. With its creepy-crawly pacing, horror-film organs and harmonizing clarinet runs, Dungen’s version of the same track has little in common with Hieroglyphic Being’s, yet somehow ends up in a similarly tension-filled place.

Villalobos gives us two takes of “C”—and as you might expect from the Chilean iconoclast, they’re a pair of drawn-out, pared-down, tightly-coiled percussion workouts, with rubbery thumps syncopating with metallic clangs and snatches of melody. They’re both a bit on the barren side, but it’s a desolation that’s brimming with a weird sort of vitality. I:Cube’s remix of “C” also is full of life, though its exuberance is of a distinctly pastel tint: its pleasingly plodding gait, big snare, poignant melody and ’80s vibe give it the feel of a particularly sinuous Simple Minds instrumental, perhaps lifted from a long-lost John Hughes masterwork.

The album’s three Thomas originals, “I,” “J” and “K,” are all worthy listens: the first two are distinct variations on a streamlined cruise down a rain-slicked street, while “K” is a acidic tech-funker worthy of Hardfloor, albeit a Hardfloor with a loose-limbed approach to drum patterns.

But the best of the set might be one of the Orb’s two adaptations, specifically the epic Heaven or Hell remix of “H.” A cavernous, multi-part Tenaglia-esque epic, loaded with thudding drums, walloping bass and swirling filigree, it’s the toughest track that the Orb has laid down in years. It’s also one of Principe Del Norte Remixed’s best moments—and in this LP’s wide-ranging embarrassment of riches, that’s saying a lot.

Photo Gallery: DVS1 presents 20 Years of HUSH, The Wall of Sound with Jeff Mills

As announced last month, Zak Khutoretsky (a.k.a. DVS1) recently embarked on a European tour that will run the course of October and November. The series of gigs were plotted in celebration of HUSH’s 20 years (the umbrella for his sound company, illegal parties and record label), promising “special events dedicated to his life-long pursuit of the beat & rhythm.” The full tour schedule can be found here.

The first stop—taking place on October 1—was hosted by Harbour Union at Maassilo, Rotterdam. On the bill were DVS1 himself, Serge, Dasha Rush (live), and Jeff Mills for the Wall of Sound—a four-metre high, 12-metre wide musical construction in collaboration with Danley Sound Labs and RF Shows. The aim was to replicate those soundsystem found at those illegal parties of the ’90s US Midwest rave scene.

A photo gallery of the setup and the wall itself can be viewed below.

Gerd Remixes Gewelt on Taub Recordings EP

Rising Belgian producer duo Gewelt have released their latest EP via Taub Recordings.

I’m Left/She’s Right will be the pair’s second on Taub Recordings, after the widespread success of their debut EP, Charity, last year. The house-oriented production team is quickly becoming known for the combining of styles and genres, mixing everything from house and techno to disco and funk into their tracks.

Across the four-track release—which includes two Gewelt originals—you can expect warm melodies, vintage textures, and classic 303 sounds. Dutch house icon Gerd, under his NY Stomp alias, steps up for remix duties, contributing two cuts that the label claims are “an homage to the 90’s New York/New Jersey house scene.”

I’m Left/She’s Right is available digitally worldwide today. You can stream previews of EP in the player below. Buy it here.

Premiere: Hear DeWalta Remix Chris Carrier’s Monsieur Georget

Zeal Recordings‘ first release will drop from Monsieur Georget, an alias of renowned French producer Chris Carrier.

A master of the house genre, Carrier is most known for crafting raw, groove-led releases on labels such as Robsoul, One Records, OFF Recordings, Silver Network, and his own Adult Only, Chronobrain, Combustible, Taka, X86, and Sound Carrier.

His latest, titled Le Village Flottant, falls under Monsieur Georget, a moniker Carrier uses for his more off-kilter, minimalistic cuts. The EP will feature three originals and a remix from German favorite DeWalta, with all four cuts exhibiting the undeniable charisma both producers are famed for.

Le Village Flottant will be released on October 17 and, in the meantime, you can stream DeWalta’s dubby remix via the player above.

Christian Jay up Next on Idle Hands

Fresh off releasing a standout cut on Banoffee Pies’ Black Label Series, Christian Jay preps to drop his debut 12″ on Bristol label Idle Hands.

Like previous Idle Hands releases from I.A. Bericochea and Matt Karmil, Jay’s Contrail / 117 is a classy minimal house 12″ for the heads. Both tracks exhibit shuffling, expertly programmed drum patterns and chirpy synths. A lot of minimal can be passed off as being bland and soulless, but Jay has a way of injecting emotion into his grooves, in turn immersing the dancing into his colorful, groove-led world—these are tracks tailor-made for adventurous dancefloors.

Ahead of the release next month, you can stream a cut from the LP via the player below.

Mitch Murder ‘Prime Operator’

The latest release to land on Norwegian label DX Seven Collective will be from leading Swedish producer Mitch Murder.

Murder has been an associate of the imprint since 2012 when he dropped his first single via the label. Now with six albums and numerous EPs under his belt, Murder will present The Real Deal EP, a collection of synth throwbacks, harking to the golden days of Wall Street.

The five tracks on the EP were “written with the intention of re-creating that ’80s Wall Street feeling; the feeling a stockbroker gets when scoring a deal.”

Like the artwork, the tracks are multi-colored retro outings—synth tracks that bleed fun. With the EP acting as a time machine, Murder attempts to transport you to a vibrant scene in ’80s New York and does so with style.

Out on October 21, you can download EP cut “Prime Operator” in full via WeTransfer below.
