Illum Sphere Preps New LP

Ryan Hunn, also known as producer and DJ Illum Sphere, will return to Ninja Tune with his second full-length, titled Glass.

Glass follows 2014’s Ghosts of Then and Now LP, but sonically moves further in the direction hinted by his Spectre Vex and Second Sight 12”s. The reduction in output over this time stems from a conscious decision to carefully signpost a change in direction. This same shift has also bled into his DJ sets, leaving him poised to delve into a new phase.

“I wanted to make an album very different to the first,” says the producer, “one with a different palette, pace and energy.”

Into The Valley Expands

After two successful years with Into the Valley festival, those behind the annual event will launch six new festivals—one in Sweden and five internationally. Today they have revealed the first three.

Into the Valley—that for two years has attracted visitors from all around the world up to Dalhalla in Rättvik—is now moving to the sunken prison of Rummu in Estonia, just outside Tallinn. In addition to this will be Into the Factory in Nynäshamn, Sweden; and Into the Castle in Cape Town. All together, six new festivals will be established up to 2019.

Into the Valley

In a major change in development, as mentioned above, Into the Valley moves from Dalhalla (Rättvik), to Rummu in Estonia, from June 29 to July 1, 2017.

Rummu is a mythical limestone quarry and also the site of an abandoned prison. Green fields and crystal clear water enclosing a small white sand beach surround the place.

The move to Rummu stemmed partly from the fact that the festival has outgrown Dalhalla in terms of accommodation for visitors—but also because those behind the project always had the ambition for it to evolve and change.

Into the Factory

Into the Factory will take place from the August 10 to 12, 2017, just outside Stockholm, in Nynashamn.

The site is called Stora Vika, and it’s an old abandoned cement factory, close to a stream in the middle of the forest. The place offers new opportunities since it’s isolated in the middle of the wild nature, yet close to both Nynashamn and Stockholm.

Into the Castle

Into the Castle, the final announcement at this moment, will take place from 26 to 27 January, 2018 in the Castle of Good Hope in Cape Town, South Africa.

The venue is an XVIIth century star fort built by the Dutch East India Company, and it’s the oldest existing colonial building in Cape Town, located right in the city.

The last three festivals will be added regularly and is tentatively planned to be implemented in Southern Europe, Asia and South America.

Early tickets will be available October 25.

Stream Marcel Dettmann’s DJ-Kicks in Full

Marcel Dettmann has mixed the latest edition of the DJ-Kicks series—and you can now stream the compilation ahead of its October 14 release.

While Dettmann is known for his sets at his residency at Berghain, his DJ-Kicks mix is crafted for listening, and displays a more reflective side of the DJ-producer. The mix explores a wide array of selections from various sub-genres; ranging from a new vocal-led Snuff Trax release, to rapping on Clarence G’s 1991 release “Cause I Said It Right,” recently reissued by Clone Records.

As Dettmann explains, this mix is a “lost and found story—I can draw from 25 years of collecting records, digging deep, revisiting, researching.” While he has previously spoken out about the need to escape home production and using different studios, “when it came to the DJ-Kicks mix, I was sitting for weeks in my music room at home listening to records, sometimes together with the kids, editing, researching, playing games… it turned out as a good combination to be at home with the family whilst working on this music project. I was listening to a lot of music which is great, music that I hadn’t listened to for ages and certainly wouldn’t have played in a club set.” The result is a mix “that doesn’t conquer itself to trends.”

Over the course of the mix’s duration, Dettmann reveals multiple new original productions; most notably a collaboration with Levon Vincent “Can You See.” The pair have collaborated before in the past, releasing”‘Vengeance” on Levon’s own Novel Sound label towards the end of 2015. The track sees the duo venture into darker territory; a stripped back, sub-bass laden affair, the quality of this production immediately stands out in the early stages of the mix.

Dettmann also collaborates with MDR affiliate Wincent Kunth on “Possible Step”: “[Wincent] is a close friend of mine, we had loads of fun producing this track but we never released it. But now felt like the right time and I couldn’t think of any reasons not to show it to the public.”

In addition to four brand new original Dettmann remixes and edits, there’s also an unreleased remix of his “Let’s Do It” from Ostgut Ton label mate Rolando.

Ahead of it’s October 14 release, you can stream Dettmann’s mix here.

Gemini Brothers feat. Shahin Badar ‘Thessali Noir’ (Justin Robertsons Deadstock 33s Dub)

Romanian duo Gemini Brothers are set to drop a new EP, titled Thessali Noir, on October 28 via Skint Records. The four-track EP features vocalist Shahin Badar on the title track, as well remixes from Justin Robertson’s Deadstock 33s and French artist FLVN, whose rework is available as a bonus on the digital release.

Not available on the official release is Justin Robertson’s Deadstock 33s Dub, another bonus cut made available as one of today’s XLR8R downloads. Donning his Deadstock 33s alias, the acid house veteran twists the title track into a squelching piece of warped disco.

Ahead of the October 28 release, you can download Justin Robertson’s Deadstock 33s Dub via WeTransfer below.

The 10-track album is heavily influenced by the natural world with its collection of hazy and hypnotic cuts and artwork. With his trusty Yamaha CS-50, a collection of found sounds, field recordings, mallet instruments, and guitar, Freese has crafted a beautiful sound world with transcendental qualities.

McAuley has been at the forefront of a freewheeling UK techno sound since his debut 12″ in 2007, and In Drum Play is likely to further cement his experimentalist reputation.
