On October 28 Cantaloupe Music will release a collection of remixes of “Timber,” a composition for six wooden 2-by-4s by Michael Gordon.

When Michael Gordon’s “Timber” premiered in 2009, it raised the bar for percussion performance. Now, newly recorded by Mantra Percussion and reworked by a number of producers, Gordon’s deep exploration into the possibilities of rhythm gets the full electronic treatment on Timber Remixed. 

The release features the studio touches of Squarepusher, Oneohtrix Point Never, Tim Hecker, Hauschka, Johann Johannsson, Ikue Mori, and many more.

The double-CD set includes Mantra’s live performance of “Timber.”

Mylko ‘Untraveled’

High school friends Jose Pablo Ibarra (“Jopa”) and Patricio Dávila Sanchez (“Pato”) began their careers as drummers but banded together and formed Mylko three years ago after working separately with an array of independent artists. Their debut album, Contrast, will arrive via Reverbatim Records on September 30 and focuses on the duo’s personal trials, tribulations, and heartaches.

The band names Cornelius, Bibio, Flying Lotus, and The Chemical Brothers as artists who have inspired and shaped its sound and style, which becomes obvious as you traverse through the eight tracks on Contrast. Today’s XLR8R download—available via WeTransfer below—is “Untraveled,” one of the album cuts that show that the band has taken those influences and twisted them into its own version of pop-leaning electronics.

yoyaku meets Arpiar

Arpiar‘s Raresh and Praslea will join Varhat (partner in yoyaku) and e-Tronik in Varhat’s hometown of Strasbourg on October 7 to play a 500-person party in a private venue.

These first three names should need little introduction—all three sit close to the forefront of today’s minimal scene—and it is a special occasion to have them all in one small location. E-tronik, who also plays, is lesser known but widely respected in underground circles. He is perhaps best known as founder of Ephémère.

Place of venue will be revealed by email on the day of the event.

Watch a Stunning Animated Video from Fiona Soe Paing

Fiona Soe Paing‘s debut album, Alien Lullabies, will drop via Colliderscope at the end of this week.

The album contains 12 unsettling electronic soundscapes that sonically detail Paing’s sprawling alien world. That world is further brought to life via the Alien Lullabies live show, a haunting cinema hybrid with projected 3D animation by collaborator Zennor Alexander—who created an animated fairytale to accompany the album. Alexander’s abstract visuals are the perfect accompaniment to Paing’s otherworldly music. It’s an ambitious project that excels in its delivery.

To preview the upcoming release, Paing has passed on the video premiere for “The Ballad Of Two Sisters,” a track based on an old murder ballad called TheTwa Sisters—which has also been recorded by artists such Bob Dylan and Tom Waits. The Cruel Sister tells the story of two sisters who share the same lover. One of the sisters is jealous of the other and drowns her in the sea. When the body washes ashore sometime later, her bones have been formed into a harp, with her golden hair as the strings. The wind blows through the strings of the harp, playing the song that tells the story of the murder. It’s an affecting story that Paing details with pained vocals and moaning sound design alongside Alexander’s alien interpretation.

One Track Brain ‘Temple’

After two really well received releases by Lockyear and Aggborough, it’s now up to One Track Brain to deliver the eighth instalment on his own OTB records. The music evokes a strong imagery using unusual melodies, organic sound sources and the relentless support of hypnotic grooves.

The Private Sky EP is scheduled for September 16 release—but offered as a free download today is “Temple,” the A2 of the upcoming four-tracker. It’s a cut that sucks you in; while the air is hot and trembling, the chords unexpectedly pull you in and your thoughts begin to wander.

Just like the previous OTB record, 88888 designed an art stamp that will be used to produce the vinyl sleeves by hand, making each piece unique. For this one they drew inspiration from Calder’s moving structures.

VRAC Returns to Subtil Records

VRAC (a.k.a Andrei Ciubuc & Vlad Radu) are set to return to Berlin’s Subtil Records.

The release features two tracks, titled “Repattern” and “Default 44.” Both are characterized by a mesh of hypnotic drums, clicks as well as dark synth-lines, skillfully arranged into an ambivalent atmosphere.

Pangaea Shares ‘Send It In’ from Upcoming Album

Hessle Audio will soon present the debut full-length from label co-founder Kevin McAuley (a.k.a Pangaea), titled In Drum Play.

The ten tracks cut deep into stripped-back techno structures, yet remain infused with the ravey intensity and rogue experimentalism that has placed his works among the most acclaimed to emerge from the UK in the last decade.

Since his debut 12” in 2007, Pangaea’s music has existed in a continual state of metamorphosis. From the ghostly flex of his early singles into the rhythmic vortices of his self-released Hadal EPs, and now the mesmerising dance of In Drum Play, it’s evolved into a freewheeling strain of ruffneck techno, with one ear jacked into sound system culture; the other in the nocturnal psychedelia of UK pioneers like Surgeon. His DJ sets have developed in parallel, becoming fast-paced voyages at the interface of loopy techno and more exploratory UK styles, an aesthetic captured on his 2014 mix for the Fabriclive CD series.

As its title suggests, In Drum Play is a product of that feedback loop between the studio and the club. The funky intensity of tracks like “Rotor Soap,” “More Is More To Burn” and “DNS” emerged from a desire to write music that mirrored the late night dancefloor environments that McAuley has been DJing within. Crafted around sharpened motifs that burrow simultaneously into mind and body, they rank among his headiest and most forceful music to date.

Wata Igarashi Mood of the Machines

Generally whatever Bryan Kasenic’s Bunker New York label does, it does well. From its roots in the city’s underground party scene, a label was founded back in 2014 that has racked up a total of 20 releases to date. The theme is a clear one: club-ready techno of the highest order, the kind you might expect to hear at the infamous events of the same name. On only a few occasions have the artists that fill its catalog (who would also feature in the lineups of the affiliated party series) provided more than one release, covering a broad, ever-tasteful spectrum of styles and productions.

The next comes from one of Japan’s freshest talents—Wata Igarashi. Despite having made his debut release only three years ago, it’s tough to imagine today’s techno landscape without him. His mastery of the genre matured over several decades: a skate punk youth, an adult life composing music for television, and an abiding intimacy with his instruments all factored into his well-received arrival on the global scene back in 2013.

In a comment on the release, Igarashi made the point that his fellow countrymen have a penchant for refining things; Mood of the Machines is no exception. Its four cuts share the same hallmarks of his previous works—quick-paced, raw, yet somehow elegant production—though that is where their closer similarities end.

“Part I” pulses with the steady palpitations of a plumped-out bassline, gently nuzzled by precise, energetic percussion. “Part IV” relies on an alien-sounding acid hook, while the hypnotic “Part III” is more akin to trance. The most ominous of the lot is “Part II”—crawling Mills-esque bleeps ring, an austere kick pounds, and a cosmic synth swoops in and out. It’s a mood that you experience in the darkest hour on the Berghain floor, completing an emphatic Bunker New York debut in which Igarashi puts no foot wrong.

Aphex Twin Heads to the US for the First Time in Eight Years

Aphex Twin will perform in the US for the first time since 2008.

Richard D. James (a.k.a. Aphex Twin) last gig in the States was at Coachella back in 2008; the British musician has now revealed that he will be heading back this December, to play at Houston’s Day for Night Festival. The event’s full lineup and tickets will be released tomorrow, Thursday September 15.

The news comes after a busy period for James: after years keeping quiet, he has released four new EPs (including the recent Cheetah EP on Warp) since 2014’s full-length Syro.

Max Greening is a sound designer and composer from Vancouver, Canada, who releases music under his given name and Flatland Sound Studio. As Flatland Sound Studio, Greening creates wildly tripped-out tracks that are truly hard to define. You’ll find splatterings of footwork, 8-bit, grime, bass, and juke—and every conceivable sub-genre in between—all tied together with his mind-bending sound design.

Greenings latest release as Flatland Sound Studio is Ocean Radio Planet, a full-length album made entirely from samples that will be released via King Deluxe on September 16. It’s an ambitious piece of work—an album full of ideas and immense depth. To give you a taste of Greenings’ sound world, King Deluxe has offered up the closing track, “Wave Arp,” as today’s download.
