Radian Readies New Album

Vienna’s leading experimental outfit Radian will release a new album this fall, entitled On Dark Silent Off.

Radian is the trio of Martin Brandlmayr (drums, electronics), John Norman (bass), and Martin Siewert (guitars, electronics), who have been influenced by and shaped the city’s vivid scene of electronica in the early 2000s. The album features guest performances by saxophonist Mats Gustafsson, and marks the first Radian album since guitarist Martin Siewert joined.

Though performing as a somewhat traditional ensemble live, the group utilizes a number of techniques both in the studio and on the stage to manipulate their sound into a uniquely effected and electronic sound, molding the most minute noises into loops and patterns that are equal parts gritty and danceable. While the album features live instrumental performances, these instruments are scrutinized and reconfigured through the lenses of vintage amplifiers, sequencers, and pushing digital outboard recording gear beyond their limits.

On Dark Silent Off has been in the making since 2010, with each piece being crafted and re-constructed over time. Debut track “Scary Objects” began its life as a live score to a Ben Russell film as part of his Trypps series.

Radian’s recording/creative process takes a central role in shaping the pieces. It is a two-fold process of creating material through improvisation, sound experiments and processing on the one hand, and a routine of carefully selecting and editing this material on the other.

In advance of the LP’s November release, “Scary Objects” is streamable in full below, with pre-order available here.

Smalltown Supersound Prepares Prins Thomas Remix Album

Prins ThomasPrincipe Del Norte album has been remixed.

The Full Pupp label head released the LP via Smalltown Supersound earlier this year; it has now been announced that an album of remixes from it will be released next month. Contributions come from Ricardo Villalobos, The Orb, Gerd Janson, Hieroglyphic Being and more. The album also includes three new original tracks by Thomas.

“Although I’ve remixed artists far and wide throughout the last decade (roughly 300 remixes and counting!), I’ve largely gone un-remixed myself,” explained Thomas. “I’m super psyched about presenting these versions to you; they’re melodies and bits from my own mind taken in new directions by a talented bunch of producers.”

Marquis Hawkes Reveals EPs on Aus and Houndstooth

Marquis Hawkes has shared details of two new EPs.

First up is I’m So Glad, a four-tracker on Fabric-affiliated Houndstooth that features vocals by Jocelyn Brown and remixes by Catz ‘N Dogz and Paul Woolford. It is hot on the heels of his recent full-length, Social Housing, which also dropped on the London-based label.

I’m So Glad is out now and can be purchased from Bandcamp. Stream snippets below. Doornroosje will follow on September 23. Pre-order it at Deejay.de and check out its title track at the bottom of this page.

Weekly Selections: The Social Festival, Israel Vines in SF, Piknic Electronik

This weekend marks the 2016 edition of The Social Festival, a house and techno-focused event taking place at the Kent County Showground over Friday and Saturday. The festival has invited a wide range of UK-based and international DJs to play across it’s six separate stages, with the obvious highlight being a back-to-back set from legends Sasha and John Digweed on Friday at The Barn. Other exciting performances not to be missed include a rare set from UK drum & bass DJ Clifford Joseph Price (a.k.a. Goldie), who will play alongside a host of his contemporaries like Roni Size and High Contrast on Saturday at Bamboo Village. Also make sure to check out the XLR8R curated Stables area, which will feature sets from George Fitzgerald, Bicep, Monkey Safari, Gerd Janson, and many more. For more information and tickets to the festival, click here.

On Saturday night in San Francisco, renowned promoters As You Like It will return to Monarch for a nightlong showcase of eclectic electronic sounds. Unfortunately, headliner and Geigling contributor Vril will not be making the party due to visa issues, but a performance from Interdimensional Transmissions mainstay Israel Vines will be sure to keep attendees moving until the early hours of the morning. Vines will play alongside Patrick Gill of Deeplabs and AYLI’s own MOSSMOSS.

And on Sunday, Piknic Electronik returns to the Parc Jean-Drapeau with a top-notch soundtrack for the evening. For the 19th edition of the season, organizers have booked Kompakt artist Weval for a headlining performance. Weval will play alongside up-and-coming Russian selector Julia Govor, among several other local Quebec DJs. This one’s not to be missed. For more information and tickets head to Picnik’s Facebook page.

Circling Vultures Prep EP on Secret Studio Records

The latest offering from SF-based imprint Secret Studio will arrive courtesy of Circling Vultures, a project fronted by Chicago natives Justin Long (Hugo Ball), and Ken Zawacki (Dar Embarks).

Circling Vultures’ sound is rooted in the hedonistic Midwestern rave scene of the ’90s, formed over a long history traversing the hedonistic spaces of that time—it’s a hardware-driven sound with a DIY punk ethos.

The duo’s forthcoming record—which follows up co-productions from D’Marc Cantu, D-Wynn, and Honey Soundsystem’s Jason Kendig, as well as an EP by Josh Elle—presents that sound in perfect chaos with three acid-drenched tracks of varied intensity. The EP will be released on vinyl, limited to 300 copies, all of which receive an instant digital download on purchase.

SCS06 will drop early October via Secret Studios. You can pre-order the record via the label’s Bandcamp, with snippets of all three tracks streaming below.

Watch a Tripped-Out Video from James Supercave

Psych-pop band James Supercave released Better Strange back in February of this year. Released on Fairfax Recordings, the album received critical acclaim from Noisey, Nerdist, and KCRW Radio for its abstract brand of pop.

The latest asset to drop from the album is the video of LA producer j.franxis‘ rework of Better Strange‘s title track. Like the track itself, the video is a tripped-out appropriation by James Kid, who reworks visuals from Half Wet by Sophie Koko Gate. As you’ll see in the above video, it’s an hallucinogenic ride through animations and real-world overlays that encapsulate James Supercave and j.franxis’ weird and wonderful worlds.

James Supercave is also embarking on a three-date tour, the dates of which you can find below.

Tour dates:

September 10 – Palm Springs, CA @ The Ace Hotel
September 12 – Oakland, CA @ Starline Social Club w Bells Atlas
October 8 – Pasadena, CA with Chairlift & Atlas Genius

H.O.S.H. & HearThuG ‘Technicolour’ (Kev Obrien ‘Scenic Route’ Remix)

H.O.S.H. and HearThug‘s “Technicolour” was released on Kev OBrien‘s Stranjjur Imprint back in 2012. At the time of release—and in the years since—the record caused quite a stir the world over via critics and DJs alike: it was named as track of the month in DJ Mag, SoundEffect Mag praised it as “One of the top tracks of 2012 by far,” and it was a fixture in the sets of Ibiza stalwarts such as Solomon and Soul Clap.

Just before the label took a two-year hiatus, OBrien turned his hand to the seminal track and gave it a fresh, deep overhaul. Leaving its hair-raising moments intact, OBrien reworked the cut with a driving low end that gives it a peak-time twist. Unreleased up until now, it’s sure to reignite the flame the original track first lit back in 2012.

As a proper goodbye to the label, OBrien has planned a two-part compilation that will feature several new remixes of tracks from its catalog, as well as reissues and several more unreleased cuts that were ignored the first time around. The compilation will see the light of day later in the year and, in the meantime, you can download Kev OBrien’s remix of “Technicolour” via WeTransfer below.
