Astronautica “Glass”

As Astronautica, Los Angeles native Edrina K. Martinez has been busy as of late adding to the vibrant tapestry that is her hometown’s electronic music scene. Stylistically, Martinez looks frequently to her immediate surroundings for inspiration. From the slow-motion haze of her self-titled debut to the lush guitar work of her performance at last years’ Low End Theory Festival, Martinez recalls the work of fellow L.A. beat makers while avoiding cliché with fresh instrumentation.

For today’s XLR8R download, Martinez has offered up “Glass,” a cut off her Alpha Pup released Gemini. In exchange for the guitars and filtered vocals of other LP tracks, she presents an instrumental mood piece accented by reverb-heavy synths and laid-back percussion.

Gerd Janson Has Signed Up for the First Ask the Experts of 2016; Send Him Your Questions Now

Our monthly Ask the Experts column has taken a little break over recent times, but now that the summer is upon it, it’s once again time to enlist the services of an artist to help enlighten the XLR8R readers.

The concept is simple: our readers send in questions about whatever they want (production methods, DJing, gear, travel, artistry, etc.) and the artist selects a handful of their favorites to answer. In the past, the results have often been the best when the artist is someone with a real wealth of experience, and that’s something Gerd Janson has in abundance.

Most of the time, the inquiries we receive tend to focus on production and what happens in the studio, but our readers should feel free to ask about whatever they like. It can be something specific about Gerd’s career, or something more general about his influences or artistic approach. All questions should be sent to [email protected]; we’ll pass them along to Gerd, and at the end of the month, we’ll publish his answers.

Output to Host Crosstown Rebels Wizardry Experience

Influential Brooklyn nightclub Output has announced plans to host the premiere edition of Crosstown Rebels’ Wizardry experience, set to take place over 16 hours on July 3. Inspired by label boss Damian Lazarus’ renowned Get Lost Wizardry Afterhours sessions, the new Wizardry experience will treat guests to an all day, all night takeover of Output’s main room and rooftop. Aside from a highly anticipated back2back2back main room set from DJ Tennis, DJ Three, and Lazarus himself, the Wizardry experience will feature daytime rooftop performances from Lum, NU, and David Terranova, as well as a special sunset live show from NYC-based producer Jaialai.

Ryogo Yamamori “Hebiichigo”

Japan’s dear relationship with techno has produced some of the most skilled figures on the circuit at the moment: DJ Nobu, Wata Igarashi and Go Hiyama are just a few of the names getting booked to ply their trade on the international stage, as well as holding it down with equal consistency in the studio. It’s an underground scene that fosters real talent.

Ryogo Yamamori fits neatly into that tradition. Sitting at the helm of his Tokyo-based label 951beat, he’s also put material out on the likes of Ovum and Purebox, which has been turning heads for a few years now. Citing key players such as Underground Resistance, Jeff Mills and Derrick May as his original inspiration, he’s been producing for almost two decades now since he first put foot in the studio back in ’99.

His latest EP, a two-tracker entitled Yureru, dropped via 951beat in late April, and is a good example of what he can do. Today, we offer one of its cuts—”Hebiichigo”— for download. Rife with trance-inducing, almost drone-like synth action, it’s an unrelenting five minute techno workout that just keeps building and building.

Scratcha DVA Looks Back to UKG Classic in New Remix

London DJ-producer Leon Smart/Scratcha DVA has revisited Seven Wonders’ UK garage anthem “Crazy” for an atmospheric rework. Smart, who will broadcast his last Hyperdub Rinse.fm show on June 12th, returns frequently to the garage aesthetic as a focal point for his radio broadcasts, mixes, and original work. Smart brings a variety of soulful vocal edits and subdued percussion to the original, instilling it with a unique blend of patience and brightness.

Stream Machinedrum’s Contribution to the Charity Driven Compilation Album ‘Malawi’

For the first time ever, the International Library of African Music has given the organization Beating Heart unprecedented access to an archive of over 35,000 recordings that were made across Africa between the 1920s & 70s. The archive was originally recorded by ethnomusicologist Hugh Tracey who made it his life’s mission to preserve the music of Africa for future generations. Beating Heart is an organization that was conceived to commission artists to remix what is now being called the largest archive of African field music in the world. The money raised from the organization’s album, Beating Heart – Malawi, will go directly to help communities where the music was originally recorded.

Beating Heart – Malawi is the first in a series to be released by Beating Heart, and features Rudimental, Luke Vibert, Machinedrum, Throwing Shade, Kidnap Kid, My Nu Leng, Clap! Clap!, and more, who have all given their time for free to create this special album that will kick-start the roll out of a new development model that will provide nutrition and income now and in the future.

Ollywood and Chris Pedley, founders of Beating Heart, comment: “The Beating Heart program reminds us of music’s unique ability to bring cultures together. It’s a great privilege to rework High Tracey’s extensive musical archive alongside contemporary musicians. It’s even sweeter that in doing so we can assist communities where the music originally came from.”

NA Envisions Pixelated Dystopia for New Video

Daniel Pineda, Fade to Mind DJ and half of production duo Nguzunguzu , has released visuals for a track off his latest solo EP as NA. Pineda takes an eclectic mix of influences into his solo production, and spins everything from reggaeton classics to DJ Mustard‘s rap hits at Fade to Mind’s L.A. club night.

The video, which features glitchy, otherworldly shots of industrial backdrops and masked factory workers, seems to tackle many of the dystopian themes covered by past solo releases and work with Maroof. Download Cellar, a follow-up to 2013’s Xtreme Tremble, on 12″ via the Fade to Mind store, or on digital via Bleep.

Exclusive: Stream an Axel Boman Track from Correspondant’s Forthcoming Compilation

In celebration of Correspondant‘s 5th-anniversary edition of its annual compilation series, the Parisian imprint has provided XLR8R with an exclusive stream of Axel Boman‘s contribution to the album, titled “The Chains of Liberty.” Following launch in 2010 by Jennifer Cardini, the label has grown steadily through an eclectic mix of releases from the likes of Roman Flügel, The Hacker, and Man Power. With cuts from longtime contributors Red Axes alongside those from newcomers Jonathan Kusuma & Autarkic, the forthcoming compilation, titled Correspondant 04, seeks to encapsulate that growth.

Since 2010, a breakthrough year in many regards for Axel Boman, the Swedish DJ-producer has been working nonstop co-founding his Studio Barnhus label, crafting a number of celebrated house releases, and importing his anthemic sets to some of the globe’s largest clubs and festivals. With “The Chains of Liberty,” Boman returns to the understated, head-bob-inducing production style that has helped him garner acclaim throughout his career.

Marcel Dettmann Drops New EP

Marcel Dettmann has released his first solo EP since 2013, via his own self-titled imprint.

Marcel Dettmann Records has been busy recruiting new faces recently: the latest release follows a four-tracker by Berlin-based Pablo Mateo as Wrong Copy earlier this year, as well as records by the likes of Giegling-affiliated SaPa and Canadian producer Ryan James Ford last year. For its most recent release, the label head himself has stepped up, with four characteristically tough slices of techno, his first solo EP since 2013.

Beastie Boys “BB01 (MANIK 13 Colonies Edit)”

During the summer of 2015, the established NYC producer MANIK took the XLR8R downloads section by storm with his three Janet Jackson edits, two of which evidently took the #10 and #1 spot on our Top 100 Downloads of 2015 roundup. Now that the summer has returned, MANIK has offered up yet another secret weapon of his that is bound to go over swimmingly. After showing some robust charting with his latest EP on Josh Wink‘s Ovum Recordings and Steve Bug‘s Poker Flat imprint, the artist has a new Bpitch Control EP coming in September and a forthcoming Discogs Podcast next month. It’s safe to say that MANIK’s level of production and mounting acclaim show no signs of slowing down.

The edit that MANIK has graciously offered up this month is a jazzed-up and syrupy rework of the famed Beastie Boys track “Paul Revere.” Taking the original track’s signature inverted sound and injecting it with an adrenalin induced house beat, MANIK rehashes the track so it can seamlessly slip out onto the dancefloor.
