Podcast 415: Kollektiv Turmstrasse

We’ll get right to the point: This week’s podcast is pure class. It’s an elegant, even romantic affair, one that manages to convey a wide swathe of emotions despite (or, perhaps, because of) an overarching aura of restraint. But what else would you expect from the German twosome known as Kollektiv Turmstrasse? The duo of Christian Hilscher and Nico Plagemann has been exploring this binary universe—a push-pull world of cool, near-ethereal moderation wedded to rich, lush passion—since the late ’90s, with a slew of sumptuous, meticulously produced singles (and a pair of full-length releases) coming out on the likes of Connaisseur, Diynamic and the duo’s own Musik Gewinnt Freunde. That’s not to mention an never-ending string of often-gorgeous remixes, for everyone from Duke Dumont and Hot Chip to, earlier this year, Super Flu and WhoMadeWho. Nowadays, Hilscher and Plagemann are known as much for their soaring live sets as anything else—if you happen to be in the Munich area, they’ll be playing at Contact Festival on Saturday, December 5—but they’re still pretty darn skilled in the DJing arts as well, as you’ll discover when you hit the PLAY button on this set of sometimes stately, always impassioned selection of tunes. And in what must be a first for XLR8R, one of the tracks features Jennifer Lawrence on vocals! (It’s a heavily reworked ditty from The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1, in case you were wondering.)

Anonym “Flash Master G And The Furious Bassheads”

As his name suggests, the artist known as Anonym has remained anonymous for the entirety of his musical career which spans over decade. What is known about this mysterious producer is that he hails from Detroit, a city which most of his sonic inspiration stems from, and that he has worked closely with the Museum of Moving Images in NYC where he has provided the scoring soundtracks for many of the works that have previously been on display. Releasing music through labels such as Archipel, Bloop, Pariter, Bass Culture, and his personal imprint Anonymous Release, Anonym’s sound and persona has a loyal connection with all things underground.

Having recently relocated to Amsterdam, Anonym has just released his latest four-track EP, XXX – The Private Selection, via Vakant Records and has been kind enough to gift XLR8R the track “Flash Master G and the Furious Bassheads.” The track is an eleven-minute club journey that gradually emerges from a clattering, electric rhythm and heavy, droning synths. The track ultimately comes to tell the distorted story of a DJ who runs up tabs with big time drug dealers due to his massive hankering for “gobs of cocaine.” You can download the track in the player below and be sure to check out more from Anonym by visiting his Soundcloud page here.

Premiere: Hear a Track from Bas Ibellini’s Upcoming EP on Tuskegee

At the end of the week, Bas Ibellini will return to Tuskegee for Friendship, his first full-length EP on the label.

Friendship will follow on from releases by The Martinez Brothers, Soundview (a.k.a. Jesse Calosso and Phil Moffa), Kool D, and Trouw resident William Kouam Djoko, presenting four thumping house tracks from the rising London-based producer. Joining Ibellini for two of the EP’s cuts is extolled Candian producer SLF, who provides his touch to the psychedelic, acid-soaked title track and the frenetic closer, “Elef Be.” For the first of his two originals, “Start Don’t Stop,” Ibellini employs beautifully spacious percussion and warped samples for the EP’s deepest cut, before “Happy Go Lucky” ramps things up with its swirling synths and swinging, skittering hats.

The EP will land on vinyl on December 4, with a Beatport release following close by on December 18. Ahead of those two dates, the groove-led EP cut “Start Don’t Stop” can be streamed in full below.

Watch a Music Video from Rex The Dog

Released today via Kompakt Records is the latest 12″ from electro-hound Jake Williams (aka Rex The Dog), titled You Are The Blade. When this voltaic veteran was first signed to Kompakt back in 2004, he initially kept his identity a secret while operating under his “Rex” persona. To this day, Williams stands by his loyal animated companion—a character which he draws himself. He and Rex continue to produce music with thick, simple 808s and high-powered modular synth arrangements that result in a heady, acid sound that is all their own.

Having gathered support from the likes of John TejadaThe Black MadonnaNick Höppner, Busy P, and many more, it is safe to say that this one will be pumped out on dancefloors around the globe. You can watch the music video for the track “Musik Hypnotises” below.

Verboten StageONE to Host Black Coffee, Matthew Dear, Art Department and More at Art Basel, Miami

A staple of the underground music scene in New York City, Verboten has been delivering quality music to the residents of the Big Apple for over a decade before touching down in its permanent residency in Brooklyn and in turn hosting some of the biggest and most anticipated shows in the five boroughs. The end of September saw the completion of Verboten’s third edition of the wildly successful StageONE summer series, bringing in acts such as Jamie xx, Maya Jane Coles, Moodyman, David August, DJ Koze, DJ Tennis, and many more.

With the winter cold rolling in and the plausibility of throwing an outdoor event being slim, Verboten has decided to migrate down south for a special, electrifying edition of StageONE in Miami for Art Basel. The sunshine state will see an huge incursion of new and exciting parties that will feature great talent such as the Touch of Class warm-up party and the Bardot & III Points party with James Murphy and Jacques Renault. It is safe to say that the StageONE day festival will be one of the greatest musical highlights of the week, featuring a list of heavyweight talent that would be foolish to miss.

The starting lineup includes Nicola Zanatta, Kevin Castro and Cuartero who will be followed up by a DJ set from the exalted musician and Verboten resident DJ Matthew Dear, South Africa’s electronic gem Black Coffee, and Jonny White of Art Department.

The event will take place from 1 pm – 2 am on December 5 at a pop up location in Miami on 540 Nw 23rd street.

You can purchase your tickets to this event via XLR8R.

Premiere: Hear Two New Remixes from Stanislav Tolkachev

On December 1, London techno label Weekend Circuit will welcome back Alderaan for his latest EP, Static/Golden Ratio, which also lands backed by two remixes from Ukrainian producer Stanislav Tolkachev on the b-side.

Hypnotically rolling in its original form, “Static” is taken even deeper into the depths by Tolkachev, whose two reworks perfectly straddle the balance between hard hitting grooves and trippy atmospherics. Tolkachev focuses on a chugging, galloping beat for his “Waiting For You” mix, interspersing swirling synth textures and metallic fills across its five-and-a-half minute run time. For the second of his two mixes, Tolkachev goes even deeper, pushing his signature atmospherics to the forefront and propping them up with an endlessly rolling, syncopated rhythm to close out the release.

Static/Golden Ratio can be preordered here ahead of the December 1 release date, with both of Tolkachev’s remixes streaming in full below.
