Jeff Mills to Compose at The Rembrandt House During ADE

Jeff Mills, one of the founding fathers of techno, is set to compose three new tracks inspired by illustrious Dutch painter Rembrandt. The 1632 oeuvre Philosopher In Meditationwill serve as the main inspiration behind the project.

“The surroundings where artistic creations are made can be as important as the narrative of the art itself. Atmosphere can often have direct impact on how the message is being conveyed. These sacred places are often kept in modest conditions, revealing a reflection of the artist’s true character. It is here where dreams and visions are born and come to life – where the message is officiated by the creator and the only true criticism is made before it is exposed to the world,” said Mills. “The sound scaling and field recording is nothing new, but in this case, its really unprecedented because what I’m going to achieve is a live recording using the ambience of the room. So, I’m not recording in the space, but will use the natural acoustics for the recording.”

Following his session at The Rembrandt House Museum, Mills will reflect on the experience at an ADE MusicTalks event at Flemish Cultural Centre De Brakke Grond.

This event will be part of the Amsterdam Dance Event’s 20th anniversary celebration and will mark the first time The Rembrandt House and the music conference collaborate together.

Retreat Imprint Returns with Two Big Summer Releases

Following a one-year break, Hauke from Session Victim and Quarion’s Retreat imprint returns with two big releases for summer.

First up is the Busted Moniker EP from Quarion. With four tracks that showcase a jazzier, somewhat wilder side of the Retreat co-founder, Busted Moniker EP has the stamp of a producer on top of his game, squeezing out all of the funk from his machines and letting loose without too much over-thinking.

Ahead of its August 17 release, the Busted Moniker EP can be steamed in full below.

The second EP, entitled Two Man House Band, by Session Victim will follow in September.

Various Artists Space Trix Vol 1

The first thing that you notice with Space Trix Vol 1—at least if you’re an old-school physical-format fan, or just like to have really cool stuff laying around the house—is its distinctive presentation. Shell out for the limited-edition box set, and you get more than just a fancy package (though you get that, too): The delivery system is a USB stick, ensconced in the belly-pack of the cutest little photopolymer-resin cosmonaut, designed by Swedish digital artist Andreas Olsson, that you’ve seen all year. That’s not to mention a nifty little booklet and a sticker. Which is all well and good—but what if, like most of us, you’re the downloading type? (Or what if the box sets are out of stock, as they were at press time?) What about the music itself?

First of all, it sounds great. The tracks, from Matthew Dear, Ghostly International’s Heathered Pearls, Mike Slott and Claude Speed, among others, were edited and remixed by the somewhat mysterious sound artist CJ Mirra, who…well, we’ll let him explain. “It’s a compilation of tracks (some new and some reworked) mixed binaurally in true 3D sound, especially for listening on headphones. All the artists sent me the stems and I played them back through various amps and speakers (for Matthew Dear’s track I did this in a forest) and recorded it with binaural mics in my ears. When you listen back to that recording it is like you are hearing exactly what I heard with the sound coming from above and below, in front and behind.”

The aural quality is indeed fantastically immersive, at least if your phones are up to the task. But, of course, none of the above matters a whit if the songs are crap. Happily, they are not—instead, the mostly beat-free Space Trix Vol 1 is awash in gorgeous ambiance, much of it managing the neat trick of merging minimalism with rich lushness. The set kicks off in elegiac fashion with somber, swelling tones of “Keep Me Here” from Slott, one of the most subtle and thoughtful members of the LuckyMe camp. It’s a fitting opener: The descending waves of sounds are simple and welcoming, building anticipation for what’s to come. Neon Jung‘s “Looking Sideways Through Time” posits itself as shaded pageantry, an army of synthetic horns heralding a somber, stately affair; Kirk Spencer adds a bit of new-age sheen to the set via “Upsides,” but rather than coming off as cloying, the song’s hyper-melodicsm and grand gestures signify a sort of melancholy optimism. Mirra’s own “Fusa,” with its cavernous organs, has the feel of a beatific hymn, while Heathered Pearls “The Worship Bell” shimmers and shivers with uplift and, perhaps, a touch of menace. Dear’s “Around A Fountain,” meanwhile, is probably the most propulsive of the bunch, with clattering, train-track rhythm providing the base for transcendent coos and Dear’s own obscured, chanted vocals. The album closer, an excerpt of binaural-sound artist Dallas Simpson‘s “Websters Raft” is the most demonstration-disc-esque cut of all the album’s tracks—it could be (and, actually, may be) a field recording of someone floating on a woodland lake while fiddling with bits and pieces of whatever’s on hand. It’s a great showcase for what 3D recording is capable of—and while it’s far from the most musical track on Space Trix Vol 1, it’s certainly preceded by plenty of breathtaking moments.

Premiere: Hear a Track from the New Avalon Emerson EP

Producer, DJ and software developer Avalon Emerson has announced a new EP on Shtum, the Dresden-based imprint.

“Constantly My Cure (Vocal Mix)” features vocals by Avalon herself that ride on an unstoppable acid-driven bassline. “Constantly My Cure (Plan Around Me Dub)”, offers an instrumental redux that’s less ambiguous in its intentions — this one’s aimed straight for maximum dancefloor effect. “Sword and Rose Forever” shows once again that she knows how to create relentless club music imbued with beautifully bittersweet atmosphere. The EP closes with the punch of “Hurdy Gurdy DJ Tool.”

Once again, the illustration on the B-side label is by Aram Haydeyan.

Ahead of the EP’s September 25 release, “Constantly My Cure (Vocal Mix)” can be exclusively streamed in full below.

Tracklist:

A1. Constantly My Cure (Vocal Mix)

A2. Sword And Rose Forever

B1. Constantly My Cure (Plan Around Me Dub)

Jacques Renault Talk System EP

Serving as a prelude for the September release of his long-awaited debut album Zentrum, the Let’s Play House label cofounder Jacques Renault returns with the heavy-hitting, four-track Talk System, boasting two originals, a remix from John Barera & Will Martin, and another from London’s Sisterhood. The title cut unfolds at a leisurely pace, with Renault adding in dashes of hissing snares, a humming baseline, and sweet falsetto wisps to build a chugging groove. Recent XLR8R podcasters John Barera & Will Martin inject the original track with a dose of dancefloor panache, using hype, old-school vocals and a riding groove to build what ends up being the high point of the release.

The EP’s second track, “Psyched Up,” lives up to its title, with Renault using stripped-back stuttering drum patterns, a gentle piano riff, and a healthy dose of acid to a mesmerizing, head-bobbing result. The Sisterhood duo, Harry Benson and John Malcolm Moore, take the cut and smooth it out a bit, adding a softer touch to the melody.

Luc Angenehm & Christian Bachmann “Golden Road (Original Mix)”

Berlin-based imprint Save Us—who’s artist roster includes Jonas Saalbach, Andrea Ljekaj, Cosmic Cowboys, and recent XLR8R podcast alumni Yokoo—has provided us with an exclusive download of rising artist Luc Angenehm & Christian Bachmann‘s “Golden Road.” Across its seven-and-a-half minute run, Angenehm and Bachmann patiently inject layers of glistening synths, organic, flickering percussive textures and a haunting strings into the track creating a gorgeous, floating piece of house music. “Golden Road” is a perfect preview for what’s to come from Angenehm’s LP, Miss Jean, which will land on Save Us later in the year, backed by remixes from Bedouin and Just Her. “Golden Road” is available for free download below and keep an eye on Save Us for Miss Jean.
