Matthewdavid Launches New Age Cassette Series and Vinyl LP Project

Leaving Records head Matthewdavid has announced the launch of Matthewdavid’s Mindflight, a project focused on new age compositions. The new endeavor will officially take hold when the first release of an ongoing cassette series arrives in the spring, followed by an eventual Matthewdavid’s Mindflight LP in the fall. The forthcoming releases appear set to include solo productions alongside a number of collaborative efforts, with the likes of Jimmy Tamborello (a.k.a. Dntel), LA artist/musician Mitchell Brown, and cosmic soundscaper Diva Dompe, and Stones Throw affiliate Mndsgn having added their talents to a handful of efforts.

Further details of the Matthewdavid’s Mindflight project’s release plans are expected to arrive in the coming weeks; in the meantime Matthewdavid’s 10-minute collaboration with Mndsgn, “Mindflight 2,” can be heard below, while the solo “Mindflight 1” can be streamed here. In addition, Matthewdavid’s Leaving label released a three-hour collection of productions from SP-MOLD over the weekend, which can be downloaded for free here.

Premiere: Hear Avalon Emerson Remix HNNY

Increasingly active Swedish producer HNNY will return to New York’s Let’s Play House imprint next month with the Solsidan/Alby EP, a four-track effort that will include a remix from rising Berlin-via-San Francisco artist Avalon Emerson (pictured above). Set to appear alongside two HNNY originals (and an additional remix from Cómeme affiliate Ana Helder), Emerson’s rework of lead EP cut “Solsidan” sees the producer/DJ refitting the breezy, jazz-flecked track into a more heavy-handed affair, chopping the tune’s breezy guitar strums and wordless vocals to fit between a clutch of thumping kicks and charging rhythmic assemblages.

Avalon Emerson’s “Second System Mix” of “Solsidan” is streaming in its entirety below ahead of the Solsidan/Alby EP’s full release on April 20 via Let’s Play House.

Octave One Readies New Album, Burn It Down

Detroit’s Octave One—the partnership of brothers Lenny Burden and Lawrence Burden—has revealed details of an upcoming album. In 2012, the two techno veterans issued a retrospective compilation, and 12″s from the pair have flowed steadily via labels such as Tresor and their own 430 West since the early ’90s— but it’s been almost a decade since their last proper full-length. The new album, entitled Burn It Down, reportedly arrives at a point where the two artists are “searching out new forms,” and assembles material aired during live shows in recent years. “As individuals and as musicians, we have grown with time and through our travels,” Octave One says. “Our music reflects that. Our work this time around has taken a lot longer to produce, but we feel it represents, more than anything else we have done to this point, our complete idea as an album project.”

Burn It Down is described as a hardware-heavy affair that encompasses everything from “triumphant diva house” to “sci-fi, slo-mo techno,” and is due out via 430 West on May 26. Until then, the record’s artwork and complete tracklist are on view below, where an updated list of Octave One tour dates has also been included.

M/D/G “Wah Fruits”

Earlier this year, Japanese label Flau launched a vinyl-only sister imprint, raum, with a 12″ from Stefan Jós. Now, the new label is set to drop its second effort later this month in the form of a self-titled EP from M/D/G, a Kyoto-based artist also known to operate as Madegg. Pulled from the record is the lop-sided soul of “Wah Fruits,” a collaged—at times sputtering—piece of refracted house music which serves as an intriguing first taste to the collection of raw, twisted productions M/D/G will have on offer when his new record drops on March 23.

Alva Noto Details Upcoming LP for Raster-Noton

Accomplished German sound artist Carsten Nicolai will return to his own Raster-Noton imprint next month with Xerrox Vol. 3, the third installment of his Xerrox album series and the first LP under his Alva Noto moniker since 2011. Nicolai (who also makes up half of the Diamond Version group and has turned in some notable collaborative efforts alongside Ryuichi Sakamoto over the years) launched the Xerrox series in 2007, followed by a second volume in 2009. According to Nicolai—speaking in a press release—the forthcoming Xerrox Vol. 3 LP is his “most personal album so far,” going on to explain that the record is largely inspired by his memories of films from his childhood and also serves as “a soundtrack to a film that actually does not exist in reality.”

The third volume in Nicolai’s Xerrox album series will see its official release on April 6. Before the record arrives on Raster-Noton, the upcoming LP’s tracklist has been included below, and clips from the album can currently be previewed here.

Premiere: Stream DJ Deep and Roman Poncet’s Hydraulic Pressure EP

Sure, DJ Deep has been been one of the leading lights of France’s clubbing firmament for two decades—but he’s certainly not one to sit back and smell les fleurs.

Last month, the producer, once known primarily as a house acolyte, released a trio of rubbery techno tracks on the L.I.E.S. label’s sterling Rébeval EP; hot on its heels, a collaboration with fellow Frenchman Roman Poncet resulted in Extraction, a three-tracker of steely, loop-driven cuts for the venerable Tresor imprint. The pair, together known as Adventice, are already back for more, and once again, tough late-hour techno is the order of the day. Like Extraction, the aptly named Hydraulic Pressure EP is full of pumping rhythms and skeletal brawn, with the release’s B2 cut—the gorgeous “Artesian Well”—supplying a bit of chilled release. It’s an utterly confident set of tunes, swaggering its way to a dancefloor near you.

Burnski “Requiem”

Seasoned UK selectors Burnski and Jon Woodall will this month launch a new label endeavor, Constant Sound, with the release of the former producer’s Your Love 12″. In part an extension of Woodall’s efforts as booker for and resident DJ of Leeds’ long-running Back to Basics weekly (a party Burnski is also closely associated with), the imprint’s inaugural release comes led by Burnski’s “Your Love” production, and backed by a pair of remixes from Steve O’Sullivan and Trus’me. Accompanying the release is “Requiem,” a bass-loaded bonus cut which further showcases Burnski’s talents as a capable producer of full-bodied house music. The track is available to grab as a 320 MP3 below and as an AIFF here; in addition, a preview stream of the Constant Sound imprint’s inaugural release has also been included below.

Legowelt Reveals Upcoming EP for Technicolour

Following behind recent releases from Hieroglyphic Being, BNJMN, and Kutmah, London label Technicolour will next add an EP from Dutch synth specialist Legowelt to its growing catalog. The forthcoming Anaconda Flow EP will offer four new productions from Legowelt, whose largely unparalleled work ethic has already resulted in records for Unknown to the Unknown and Crème Organization this year. On his next outing, the Dutch artist appears set to continue exploring his unique brand of psych-tinged, synth-soaked dancefloor workouts, but—as a stream of the record’s lead track seems to indicate—perhaps in a slightly darker shade than Legowelt has made use of across his recent EPs.

Cobblestone Jazz Returns to IIWII on Upcoming 12″

Cobblestone Jazz, the acclaimed Canadian futuristic jazz ensemble staffed by Mathew Jonson, Danuel Tate, and Tyger Dhula, released three EPs on IIWII (a.k.a. Itiswhatitis) in the early and middle ’00s. Since then, the outfit has released material almost exclusively via Wagon Repair, but with Jonson having taken over IIWII a couple of years back, the group are now poised to return to the imprint with a 12″ by the name of Northern Lights. An expansive two-tracker that clocks in at nearly 25 minutes, it is the product of recordings that were apparently “done in one pass over a three-day period in 2013, and edits were culled this past winter.” No previews are currently available for the 12″, but the upcoming record’s artwork and tracklist have been included below ahead of its April 27 release date.

The Cyclist Preps New EP for Music Is for Losers; Preview It Now

Following the release of his sophomore LP, Flourish, via All City late last year, The Cyclist will return with six new fuzzy, mangled house constructions on the Hot House EP next month. Arriving in vinyl and digital form via upstart London label Music Is for Losers (and in cassette form via 100% Silk), Hot House appears setmto find continuing to make use of both lo-fi hardware to help craft his brand of distortion-lined club tracks.

Scheduled to land on April 6, a preview stream of all six Hot House cuts (and the record’s accompanying tracklist) can be found below.
