Berlin Community Radio Winds Up Crowdfunding Campaign

Berlin Community Radio finishes up a 12-day crowdfunding marathon today, which—if successful—will help the station remain active for another year. Established by Anastasia Filipovna and Sarah Miles (pictured above) in 2013, BCR hosts regular transmissions from familiar faces on XLR8R such as DJ Richard, Terekke, and former contributor Palms Trax, and features guest appearances from the likes of Ital, Anthony Naples, Huerco S., and Loefah. As an independent operation without corporate sponsorship, BCR launched a campaign to raise funds at the start of 2015, and is currently the leading contender in a media grant contest sponsored by the city of Berlin, which would award Filipovna and Miles €5000 to sustain operations throughout this year and into the next. Voting is open through midnight CET on March 12 and no registration is required—just click the heart beside Berlin Community Radio to enter. Gacha to Release Debut LP via Apollo, Shares New Track

After delivering two EPs for the R&S sub-label, Gacha will return to the Apollo imprint in May with his debut LP, Send Two Sunsets. “The album is a collection of tunes built over the years rather than an album with a concept that you try understand over time,” Gacha (who also produces under the name Bakradze) explains in a press release. “The tracks are all from the last three years, and I feel they capture everything that happened around me during this period of my life. Some of the tracks were recorded when I was just starting to make music and some are new songs with a more improvisational process behind their creation.”

The resulting nine-track album appears set to present a wide range of moods and production styles, with the focus often being on rich, blissful electronics with occasional jaunts to the dancefloor included throughout. To that end, Gacha has shared a full stream of appropriately titled LP cut “Bliss,” an airy composition which features the hushed vocals of Natalie Beridze. “Bliss” can be streamed below ahead of Send Two Sunsets‘ official release on May 5; the complete tracklist for Gacha’s upcoming debut LP has also been included below.

Lauer Readies New Album for Permanent Vacation; Stream a Track Now

Longstanding Frankfurt producer (and, as half of the Tuff City Kids outfit, a frequent Gerd Janson collaborator) Phillip Lauer (or simply just Lauer) will issue his second full-length album, Borndom, in the coming months. The 13-track record follows behind Lauer’s impressive string of releases dating back to the early aughts for labels such as Running Back, Beats in Space, and the imprint which will release his forthcoming LP, Permanent Vacation, among others. With a style “rooted in pop music and mixed with the reactance and sound aesthetics of punk, while wearing dancing shoes,” Lauer’s Borndom LP promises to be a melodically rich affair that seeks out many different paths to the dancefloor.

Ahead of the album’s May 8 release date, Permanent Vacation has let loose a full stream of LP cut “ESC,” a new wave-indebted cut flush with classic synth tones and thick vocal layers from Jasnau. Walls Announces Third and Final LP

Walls (a.k.a. Sam Willis and Alessio Natalizia) began a three-album cycle in 2010 with a self-titled LP of fleeting drones; in 2011, they followed it with the IDM and krautrock-leaning Coracle. Now, the European duo have shared details of Urals, which will serve as the project’s third and final record. According to the album’s press release, Urals will see the pair “inverting their signature sound into a new, more intense dimension,” the result of a four-year period of studio experimentation. Mastered by Spacemen 3’s Sonic Boom, Urals will be released via Walls’ own Ecstatic imprint on May 4; until then, the full tracklist and album art can be found below.

Future Times Preps New 12″s from Japa Habilidoso and Mosey; Preview Them Now

The DC-based Future Times label (ran in part by Maxmillion Dunbar) has announced plans to issue two EPs from label newcomers Japa Habilidoso (a.k.a. Guerrhina) and Mosey next month.

Brazilian producer Japa Habilidoso (who also runs the 40% Foda/Maneirissimo label) is set to offer two new tracks on his Funk Do Sindicalismo EP, with the label describing the a-side effort as the “most punk shit that Future Times has so far had the pleasure of releasing,” while the b-side “rides rugged piano loops and a collage of voices and noises to perfection.” Also set to appear around the same time as Habilidoso’s record for the label is Tuff Times, a three-track effort from a newcomer by the name of Mosey, whose productions are touted as having “an intangible, melancholy lift to them, [making them] primed for fans of lovers rock techno and 16-Bit new wave.” Both the Funk Do Sindicalismo and Tuff Times EPs are slated to land in April; in the meantime the pair of forthcoming records can be previewed below.

Watch a Gruesome Video from Powell

Recent XL signee Oscar Powell (a.k.a. Powell) celebrates the release of his “Sylvester Stallone” b/w “Smut” 12″ today with a highly uncomfortable video for the single’s title track. Directed by influential designer and filmmaker Trevor Jackson, the video follows a Clockwork Orange-style torture sequence, by which the young producer is shackled and forced to watch invasive television clips. Eventually, his body can’t handle the pressure, resulting a rather intense physical reaction. Powell’s XL debut is out now, while the video for the record’s a-side effort, “Sylvester Stallone” can be watched in full below.

Max Cooper and Tom Hodge Announce New Collaborative EP

UK artist and recent Essential Mix contributorMax Cooper (pictured above) has announced plans to issue his second EP with pianist/film composer Tom Hodge, who together released the Fragmented Self Pt. 1 EP in 2013. Titled Artefact, the new collaborative release is said to feature songs inspired by “the power of treasured objects and sounds to evoke involuntary emotional response,” as well as Cooper’s 2012 visit to the Teotihuacan pyramids in Mexico, and a piece called “Resonant Expanse” that showcases Hodge’s piano arrangements and Cooper’s intricate sound editing. Currently, the first part of the pair’s “Teotihuacan” composition (which will not appear on the upcoming EP) is available for free download via Cooper’s website. The pair’s Artefact EP will be released via the FIELDS label on April 20; in the meantime, the artwork and complete tracklist for the upcoming record can be found below.

Josef Gaard “Elysea”

“Elysea” is a somewhat deceivingly human-sounding title for this machine-made track from Seattle’s Josef Gaard. One of four tunes set to be included on the artist’s forthcoming Obsidian Falls EP for the Blankstairs label, “Elysea” is a piece of atmospheric techno that piles many layers of reverberant metallic clangs and echo-drowned textures across its plodding thump. From the onset, Gaard utilizes what sounds like the hum of a hard-working engine to churn above the track’s thick kicks, gradually dubbing out the engine’s rattle as he streaks a wide array of elongated textures atop his production’s efficient rhythmic core. Gaard—a resident of Seattle’s Secondnature crew—will issue his Obsidian Falls EP in both digital and vinyl formats on March 31; in the meantime, his “Elysea” production can be grabbed below.

Listen to the Title Track from Tessela’s Forthcoming ‘Bottom Out’ EP

UK producer Ed Russell (a.k.a. Tessela) will soon return to Belgian outpost R&S with the Bottom Out EP. After first announcing the record back in February, Russell has today shared a stream of the effort’s title track, which patters ahead with taut drum synths as flangers sweep across the stereo field. Bottom Out will also feature a remix treatment from Livity Sound co-founder Kowton, as well as a hectic, percussive collage called “Total Music” when the EP drops on March 24. Until then, the record’s title track can be streamed in its entirety below.

Premiere: Stream Matrixxman’s New EP for Spectral Sound

Next week sees prolific San Francisco-based producer Matrixxman return to Ghostly’s Spectral Sound imprint for the second time with StuxNet, a four-track EP that can now be streamed in full ahead of its release.

Fueled by crunchy hardware rhythms and lurching acid lines, the original efforts featured on StuxNet are said to be split into two distinct halves: “StuxNet Part I” burrows squirming synth tones and distant atmospheres beneath a restless procession of thick drum-machine percussion, while “StuxNet Part II” takes shape as a more muffled endeavor, its groove built around a slightly less erratic chain of drum-machine kicks and snares. On the flip side, the reins are handed over to Hieroglyphic Being and Silent Servant, who each take on separate tracks from Matrixxman’s Amulet EP (his 2014 release for Spectral) and add their own distinctive touch to the proceedings.
