Phonogenic “Mizumono”

As a solo artist and as part of collaborative outfits, Finnish-born producer Tuomas Salmela has released material on an impressive number of dance music labels (his discography boasts the likes of 2020Vision, Turbo, and Rekids, to name a few). Next, Salmela is set to land on the Turquoise Blue imprint with the Hobo Dots EP, which will find the artist operating under his Phonogenic alias (a project which is also set to release a full-length LP later this year). Ahead of the EP’s release next week, Salmela has passed along “Mizumono,” a bonus cut from the Hobo Dots sessions. Stretched across a brisk seven minutes, the production is squarely focused on the dancefloor; a handful of squiggly synths and atmospheric textures are sprinkled throughout the track, but it is really the tune’s sludgy bassline and sharp rhythmic components that do the heavy lifting here. Salmela’s free offering can be grabbed below where a preview stream of the man’s upcoming EP (which features a collaborative remix from The Mole and Hreno) can also be found.

Oneohtrix Point Never Preps Record Store Day 12″

NYC-based artist and former XLR8R podcast contributor Oneohtrix Point Never will release the Commissions II 12″ on Record Store Day next month. A companion to his first Commissions EP (released last year), the forthcoming 12″ will consist of three efforts composed by the artist born Daniel Lopatin for various projects. The record’s a-side selections “Bullet Hell Abstraction I” and “Bullet Hell Abstraction III” are said to be “inspired by the video game soundtracks of celebrated Japanese artist Manabu Namiki,” and come from Lopatin’s performance of the full Bullet Hell Abstraction composition commissioned for RBMA’s recent Tokyo session; the b-side affair, “Suite from Magnetic Rose,” stems from the artist’s re-imagined soundtrack (performed live) to Koji Morimoto’s historic anime film, Magnetic Rose.

The Commissions II 12″ will see its official release on Record Store Day, April 18. In the meantime, the artwork and tracklist for Oneohtrix Point Never’s upcoming record have been included below.

Galcher Lustwerk Launches New Label, Details Upcoming EPs

White Material affiliate Galcher Lustwerk has announced plans to start his own label. Operating under the name Lustwerk Music, the imprint will launch in June with the release of two four-track EPs by the Brooklyn-based DJ/producer himself, with Parlay and I Neva Seen gathering together retooled tracks from Lustwerk’s excellent 2013 mixtape, 100% Galcher. The glimmering, slow-burn house of Parlay‘s title track can be previewed in full via the player below ahead of the records’ June 8 release date; the tracklists for both forthcoming EPs have also been included below.

Download James Holden’s Group Humanizer Max for Live Patch

Seasoned electronic producer and Border Community head James Holden has taken it upon himself to give Ableton users a new way to infuse their tracks with the subtleties of human timing, offering his Group Humanizer plug-in as a free download. The Max for Live patch is said to be based on research from Harvard scientists (specifically that of Harvard scientist Holger Hennig), which helps the Group Humanizer “automatically shapes the timing of your audio and MIDI channels, injecting the organic push-pull feel you can only get from human performance.”

In a post on Ableton’s website, Holden explains further: “The Harvard scientists focussed on one aspect of musical performance—the fine (millisecond level) details of timing when two people play together. What they found was that the timing of each individual note is dependent on every single note that both players had already played—a minor timing hiccup near the start of a piece will continue to affect every single note after it, up to the last notes. And when you play a duet every note your partner plays affects your playing, and every note you play affects your partner: a two directional information transfer is happening.”

And so, Holden has developed a Max for Live patch to allow elements in one’s production to emulate the kind of minute inconsistencies unique to human timing. Best yet, the UK producer has offered his creation for free, making the Group Humanizer plug-in available to download here. Holly Herndon Reveals Sophomore LP, Shares New Track

Holly Herndon has revealed the details of her forthcoming sophomore LP, Platform, which will see a joint release via 4AD/RVNG in May. Made up of 10 new songs, Platform is said to find the multifaceted vocalist/producer/electronic composer opening up her creative process to include collaborations with “vital artists and thinkers from Herndon’s creative circle, including radical Dutch design studio Metahaven and digital DIY artist Mat Dryhurst.” Furthermore, the LP is intended as a, well, platform to “underscore the need for new fantasies and strategic collective action… leading by example to tackle a host of topics ranging from systemic inequality, surveillance states, and neo-feudalism.”

Serving as the first taste of Herndon’s upcoming full-length effort (out on May 18) is “Interference,” the record’s scattered—but pristinely produced—lead track. The video for the LP’s first single can be watched below, where the full tracklist for Herndon’s forthcoming Platform LP has also been included (the record’s artwork is on view above). Shlohmo Drops New Video for “Beams”

After sharing a video for his forthcoming LP’s first single, “Buried,” last month, LA beatmaker Shlohmo has dropped a new clip for the record’s second single, “Beams.” Serving as the Dark Red LP’s dramatic, crashing album closer, “Beams” is here accompanied by a flurry of hand-held footage aimed at capturing what a press release describes as “the rawness and nostalgic carelessness we associate with being young.” The full video for “Beams” can be watched below before Shlohmo’s new full-length record lands on April 17 via True Panther/Wedidit.

TK Disco to Release Todd Terje Edits of KC & The Sunshine Band

Henry Stone’s’70s disco label TK Disco has announced it will release two 10″s of Todd Terje‘s KC & The Sunshine band edits on Record Store Day. The two releases will feature the original track on the a-side (“I Get Lifted” on the first 10″; “I’m Your Boogie Man” on the second), and Terje’s edit on the flip. Both edits have seen the light of day before on unofficial releases, and Terje’s version of “I’m Your Boogie Man” can be heard below ahead of the April 18 release date. (via Resident Advisor).

Fluida “Deep Down (Dub)”

If we new anything more about Fluida other than the fact that it is a project with an upcoming EP for Southern Fried, we’d gladly inform the XLR8R faithful. However, we really don’t know much about Fluida. We do know the project will drop what appears to be its debut EP, Red Spiral, on April 13, for which the un-dubbed version of “Deep Down” will serve as the three-track record’s closing cut. Featured here, the dub version of the tune is nevertheless a rather enticing affair, one that lays out in the more sun-soaked ends of house, folding many layers of hand-played percussion and soft Balearic touches into its breezy six-plus-minute runtime.

Hudson Mohawke Announces New Album for Warp, Shares Teaser Video

Hudson Mohawke has revealed plans to return to Warp with Lantern, an album the producer himself says, “is everything I’ve been working towards.” The 14-track LP is set to arrive in June and will bring with it a handful of featured artists, including likes of Miguel, Antony, and Jhené Aiko, among others. “I wanted to make a classic—at least for me and my friends,” Mohawke further explains of the album in a press release. “I never wanted to be any genre. I wanted to be my own thing. Everything.”

Ahead of Lantern‘s June 16 release, Mohawke has revealed the upcoming LP’s full tracklist and shared a brief teaser video for the record, which can be found below. In addition, a slew of the globetrotting DJ/producer’s upcoming tour dates have also been included below.

Premiere: Listen to a New Remix from Dauwd

Late last year, Ólafur Arnalds and Janus Rasmussen came together to release a full-length LP as Kiasmos via the Erased Tapes imprint. A self-titled affair, the pair will soon revisit its recent album for a Record Store Day 12″ that will focus on LP cut “Looped” as well as two reworks, including one from Kompakt/Ghostly affiliate Dauwd (pictured above).

“The parts had so much texture and warmth that working with them in my own space was quite inspiring,” Dauwd says of the original “Held” in a press release. “I tried to respond impulsively to the parts and allow anything to happen.” The resulting remix sees the UK talent refitting Kiasmos’ production into a more club-minded framework while still retaining the restrained atmosphere and rich tones of the original. Dauwd’s remix of Kiasmos can be streamed in full below before it lands as part of the Looped 12″ on Record Store Day, April 18. (It should also be noted that Dauwd’s Jupiter George EP is set to arrive via Kompakt later this month, on March 23). In addition, Kiasmos is set to embark on a North American tour throughout May and June, the complete dates for which can be found on the flier below.
