Funkstörung Reunites, Announces New LP

Nearly a decade has passed since Funkstörung released its last studio album, The Return to Acid Planet, but German producers Christian de Luca and Michael Fakesch have finally emerged with news of a forthcoming, self-titled LP which will arrive via Monkeytown this summer. Describing the production process for Funkstörung, the veteran duo explains, “By now we don’t have to prove to anyone that we know how to program complex beats, breaks, and glitches (which became obsolete with new technology anyway)… to us it was more important to write good songs.” In addition to the announcement, the producers have shared a free download of edited album cut “Laid Out,” which features a breathy vocal contribution from Funkstörung’s “good friend” Anothr — a mysterious artist from the duo’s hometown of Rosenheim, Germany.

While we await for the full details of the upcoming Funkstörung LP to arrive, and ahead of the record’s official release on July 31, an edit of the pair’s “Laid Out” production can be streamed and downloaded below.

Ozy “Alltaf Eins (El Fog Remix)”

A seasoned dub-techno producer who has been releasing music since the late ’90s, Icelandic artist Örnólfur Thorlacius (a.k.a. Ozy) has landed with a new LP via the nothings66 imprint. Incorporating a number of cold, textured originals alongside remixes from the likes of Laurel Halo and Miles Whittaker, Thorlacius’ new Distant Present LP serves as the producer’s first full-length effort since 2002. To celebrate the record’s release (it is out now in Japan and officially arrives in the US, UK, and Europe on March 25), Ozy and nothings66 have gathered a few additional remixes such as this one from Berlin-based sound artist and vibraphonist El Fog. Taking on “Alltaf Eins”—a cut from Ozy’s 2002 LP, Gray Area—El Fog creates an hypnotically immersive expedition, burying precise sub-bass pulses and bits of microscopic percussion beneath richly detailed layers of electronic abstraction. El Fog’s rework of “Alltaf Eins” is available to grab for free below, where a sampler of Ozy’s new Distant Present album has also been included.

Drew Lustman Announces Upcoming Album for Planet Mu

After releasing a follow-up EP to his notable 2014 album as FaltyDL, In the Wild, a few months back, prolific Brooklyn producer Drew Lustman has today shared details of another project which will soon release a new LP via Planet Mu. Operating under his given name, Lustman says the forthcoming album will focus on music that he “would DJ with or play to friends without the pressure of the conceptual weighing him down,” and with a genre palette that spans hardcore and soul. Titled The Crystal Cowboy, the LP will see Lustman returning to his early label home with 11 new tracks, and with New York rapper Le1f serving as the record’s sole guest vocalist on “Onyx.”

Wallwork & RZR “Ibada Funk”

Over the past eight months, the UK pair of Wallwork & RZR have maintained a regular presence in XLR8R‘s Downloads section, and right on schedule, the duo has returned to the fold with “Ibada Funk,” a bonus cut from the group’s upcoming Don’t Panic EP. Slated to arrive via newly launched East London label Nervous Horizon, the record appears set to find Wallwork & RZR continuing to craft mangled pieces of full-bodied club music, an artistic aim “Ibada Funk” certainly signals is alive and well for the pair. Riding a heavy-handed skip for most all of its five-minute run, the production laces its booming kicks and sharpened snares with layers of more cosmic sonics: slowly revolving pads, spacey chords, and distant FX fill the spaces left empty between the track’s formidable rhythmic structures. In addition to offering “Ibada Funk” here, Wallwork & RZR have also shared a preview stream of its forthcoming Don’t Panic EP (which features a remix from Deft) below; the record will serve as the Nervous Horizon imprint’s inaugural vinyl release when it lands on March 16.

Kid606 to Release Ambient Album

Longstanding sonic experimenter Kid606 has announced plans to release an album’s worth of ambient material via his own Tigerbeat6 imprint in the coming months. Over his career, the Venezuela-born producer has often been associated with hyperactive breakcore, glitch, and gabber-influenced fare, but his forthcoming Recollected Ambient Works Vol. 1: Bored of Excitement album is said to be inspired by the Berlin School of electronic music, taking cues from masters of atmospheric compositions such as Manuel Gottsching and Tangerine Dream.

DIVA and Iron Galaxy Prep New 12″ as N / Y / X

The Obsession label has announced the debut release from a new collaborative project between Matt Didemus (a.k.a. former XLR8R podcast contributor DIVA, who also serve as one half of Junior Boys, the proprietor of the aforementioned imprint, and is also pictured above) and his fellow Canadian Adam Hodgins (a.k.a. Iron Galaxy), a former Bubblin’ Up artist.

Operating together as N / Y / X, the two-track “Love Haze” b/w “Kalamazoo” 12″—which was apparently “the result of a 10-day jam session in Utrecht”—finds the pair firstly turning out a strain of techno that skillfully blends heavy rhythmic elements with linear, propulsive grooves, and then hitting on more restrained, pastoral territory on the record’s b-side. Preview clips of the 12” can currently be heard below, while the record’s artwork and tracklist has been included below ahead of the effort’s March 23 release date.

Kelela Reveals Upcoming ‘Hallucinogen’ EP; Hear a Track Now

Ascendant Los Angeles-based vocalist and Fade to Mind affiliate Kelela has quickly followed up news of the forthcoming deluxe edition of her Cut 4 Me mixtape with details of a new EP, Hallucinogen. The upcoming six-track effort is said to be made up of tracks originally recorded for Kelela’s imminent debut LP, but which ultimately “found a natural synergy with one another.” Furthermore, the record is said to explore “the light and darkness of love and sexuality,” with each song representing different stages in a relationship.

Leading the EP will be “A Message,” a track produced by Arca which can be heard in full now via the video below. Kelela’s Hallucinogen EP is set to drop on May 5, with her proper debut solo album slated follow this fall. In addition to the video for “A Message” and the forthcoming EP’s tracklist, Kelela’s upcoming European tour dates have also been included below.

Teleskop “WMAP (Kask Remix)”

Amsterdam label Legendary Sound Research will drop a new EP from Croatian artist Teleskop next week (March 9, to be precise). Joining two originals from the budding talent on Entropolis will be a pair of remixes from Dutch producer Magensii and Estonian talent Kask, whose take on Teleskop’s “WMAP” production is featured here. A swinging, soulful affair streaked with bubbling arpeggios in its original from, Kask buries “WMAP” beneath layers of warm analog distortion and moody, wide-spanning pads, making the track more suited for the dark corners of the dancefloor than Teleskop may have originally intended. Having already contributed an EP to the Dutch label’s growing catalog, Kask is set to return to Legendary Sound Research on the imprint’s next outing; in the meantime, the producer’s remix of “WMAP” can be grabbed for free below.

Actress Announces Upcoming DJ-Kicks Mix Album

!K7 has announced that the 49th edition of its venerable DJ-Kicks mix series will come from revered UK artist Darren Cunningham (a.k.a. Actress). Though XLR8R did manage to enlist Cunningham for a rare podcast a year ago, the producer’s DJ-Kicks outing will serve as the London artist’s first official commercially available mix.

Set to feature cuts from the likes of Autechre, John Beltran, and Gherkin Jerks, Cunningham has this to say about the hour-long offering: “When I’m selecting music I’m not always thinking about the music alone. I’m thinking about the names of the artists, tracks, and labels, and what they mean to me. I often base my tracklisting purely on how well the track titles work together in a poetic sense. I’ve tried to keep space between tracks, allowing them to speak. I tried not to force BPM shifts and to let the programming remain choppy and quick.”

Actress’ DJ Kicks mix will be available in both digital and CD format, while nine of the mix’s tracks will also be available in unmixed form on a vinyl release. As is traditional with DJ-Kicks mixes, Actress’ installment will also feature an unreleased track by the artist himself; entitled “Bird Matrix,” the production was apparently recorded just after the completion of Cunningham’s fourth album, Ghettoville. The artwork and tracklists for both the mix and the companion vinyl can be found below ahead of their May 1 release date.

Premiere: Watch a New Video for Sam Prekop’s “Weather Vane”

Last month Sam Prekop returned to Thrill Jockey with The Republic, his second LP of sprawling modular constructions for the label. With nine of the record’s (mostly) ambient expeditions having been originally crafted to serve as the score for a video installation by David Hartt (also titled The Republic), the visual artist has here returned the favor, stitching together a number of disparate pieces of video to serve as the visual accompaniment to Prekop’s “Weather Vane” composition. A bubbly, meandering endeavor, “Weather Vane” twists and turns for just under four minutes as a sequence of black-and-white images join the track’s hypnotically unhurried run.

In addition, Prekop has also passed along the details for a slew of upcoming tour dates which will find him bringing his modular constructions to life alongside fellow The Sea and Cake member Archer Prewitt; those dates have also been included below.
