Barrientos “Los Suenos”

The flutter of tropical birds which opens this track serves as a fitting intro for “Los Suenos,” a tune from rising Glasgow producer Barrientos‘ recent Feel the Waves EP for hometown label Glasgow Underground. Built around a distinctly tropical groove—and chocked full of spoken Spanish samples—the tune rides atop waves of cool, tranquil synths with a careful array of looping melodies and airy, side-chained pads. It all results in a track that is both peaceful and calming, but also entirely appropriate for some dancefloor shine. The Scotish upstart’s Feel the Waves EP is out in 12″ format now.

HNNY Mys/Kela

For all intents and purposes, Stockholm’s Johan Cederberg (a.k.a. HNNY) is still relatively new to the game, with just a few 12″s on Swedish house imprints Studio Barnhus and Local Talk to his name. Let’s Play House seems to have a bit of a Swedish fixation of late, and it’s tipped Cederberg as another promising voice. The polished, pumping house originals on Mys/Kela fit in well enough with the label’s aesthetic, but the remixes, from Young Marco and Shakarchi & Stranéus, are what really make the package worth checking.

Even so, Cederberg’s “Mys” is an immediately imposing introduction. Its powerful R&B “ahhs” seem to signify, like the Soul II Soul acapella that opens Belly, that something major is going to happen. This sadly isn’t the case. Its pokey bassline is infectious enough, but beyond it, the vocals simply get rinsed out, as they’re repeated throughout the track with little in the way of development. Amsterdam’s Young Marco proves his talent yet again on the remix, though. The track’s tensely kinked rhythm is cut with a wonderfully plinky melody, and the vocals are only deployed when it all seems fit to burst. It’s a fine slice of the tropical-synthetic house he’s so good at; think of him as a kind of young Roman Flügel, set apart from his peers by his music’s simultaneous exuberance and control. Cederberg’s “Kela” is a solid slice of garagey house, replete with dusky organ, synth sax, and more soul vocals, but it’s not especially unique, especially in the wake of so much recent garage revivalism. Fellow Swedes Shakarchi & Stranéus reduce it to a low-key bounce, highlighted by blobby square bass and heady filter tricks. It’s a playful salvaging of a track that’s a bit too hung up on clichés to succeed on its own.

Serato to Discontinue Scratch Live, Moves Vinyl-Control Platform to Serato DJ

Serato has announced that it will no longer issue updates to Scratch Live, the company’s widely popular, decade-old software which has allowed for DJs to control their digital music libraries using the traditional tools of turntables and CDJs. While Serato plans to no longer update Scratch Live (or SSL), user support for the program will be available up until 2015, which includes fixing any major bugs or compatibility issues that may occur down the line.

Serato does not plan to leave DJs completely hanging, however, and has announced that DVS (the technology which allows turntables and CDJs to control Serato) will be available in new editions of Serato DJ, which existing SSL users can upgrade to for free. Two new mixers—the Rane Sixty-Four and Pioneer DJM-900SRT—will be available starting next month, complete with the capability of utilzing DVS to control Serato DJ. In the video below, the company’s CEO, Sam Gribben, explains the reasons behind the discontinuation and lays out the timeline for converting SSL users moving forward. (via FACT)

Watch Karizma Talk Inspiration Behind His New Album

Wall of Sound, the latest LP from Baltimore house stalwart Karizma, saw a release earlier this week via the R2 label, and to coincide with the record’s arrival, a brief video has surfaced in which the veteran DJ/producer discusses his inspirations and aims for the new double-disc album. Talking on camera, Karizma details his goals for Wall of Sound, describing it as a purposefully “ADD” record while also discussing the few key partners which helped him piece it all together. Furthmore, after giving the video a look, those interested can stream a 13-minute preview of the soul-drenched, 30-plus-track record below.

Cloud Boat “Amber Road (The Haxan Cloak Remix)”

Earlier this year, London duo Coud Boat released its expansive debut LP, Book of Hours, via R&S sub-label Apollo. Now, “Amber Road” has been plucked from that album’s tracklist and handed over to sonic sorcerer The Haxan Cloak (pictured above), who delivers a dark and brooding rework (we wouldn’t expect anything less). Almost doubling the length of “Amber Road” on his remix, the London sound designer/producer infuses the already gloomy original tune with an added edge, singeing the revolving drones and menacing pads with a fuzzy distortion before focusing on the churning rhythms of the percussive layers assembled below.

Listen to Another New Song from Oneohtrix Point Never

With less than a month before the release of his R Plus Seven LP for Warp, Brooklyn sound alchemist Oneohtrix Point Never has shared another uncanny production from his upcoming album’s tracklist. The skittering and astral “Zebra” clocks in at nearly seven minutes, and makes for one of the most linear and cohesive excerpts we’ve yet heard from R Plus Seven, which is out on October 1. Before then, Oneohtrix Point Never’s mercurial new track can be streamed in full via the player below.

Novation Introduces Launchkey Mini, Launchpad Mini, and Launch Control

Hardware brand Novation has introduced compact versions of two of its popular MIDI controllers, unveiling the Launchkey Mini and Launchpad Mini, as well as the Launch Control companion, this week. The three new units are clearly intended to serve as mobile control devices—the Launchpad Mini is even touted as being “for the iPad generation.” The trio of brief introductory videos included below give a good idea of what each forthcoming unit is capable of, while the more specific features of each product can be found on their respective web pages. All three units are expected to hit stores sometime later this month (October at the latest), and are rumored to be available to purchase for a street price of around $99.

After recently concluding his cassette trilogy, prolific Los Angeles producer and former XLR8Rpodcast contributor Jonwayne has announced plans to release his first proper album as an MC next month via Stones Throw. While no official tracklist has been shared for the man’s forthcoming RAP ALBUM ONE LP, the official release date for the record has been set for October 29. To hold Jonwayne fans over in the meantime, Stones Throw has shared a stream of twisted album cut “Reflection,” which can be streamed via the player below.

Kodiak “Dragon Drop (Eliphino Remix)”

London duo and verterans of Glasgow’s Numbers imprint, Kodiak is next to step up on Hot Haus—the vinyl offshoot of DJ Haus’ ceaselessly prolific Unknown to the Unknown label—with the three-track Dragon Drop EP (out later this month). Joining the recrod’s two original productions is this remix by fellow Londoner Eliphino, who refits the adventurous sounds of Kodiak’s version into a more focused package. Where “Dragon Drop” is laced with bits of footwork flare, Eliphino’s take leans more towards the steady pulse of house, infusing the slightly jacked beat with a thick, UKG-indebted bassline, a slew of atmospheric chords, and slow-brewing arpeggios which lift the tunes’ soul-drenched vocal chops to the forefront. The rest of Dragon Drop can be previewed after the jump.
