Kiefer Back on Stones Throw with “Imaginative” New EP

Kiefer is back with his second release of 2019, Superbloom, scheduled for September 20 release via Stones Throw

Kiefer considers Superbloom to form part of a cohesive whole with Bridges, which, released in April, saw him expand his musical palette beyond the piano, working with a number of analogue synths.

On Superbloom, he takes that a step further, with songs that he describes as “brighter, more imaginative, and vibrant.” He describes the EP as a “very active” work: “The first five tracks are invigorating, while the final two tracks act as a grand exhale following all that energy.”

Kiefer, who studied jazz at UCLA under musician Kenny Burrell—the program counts Kamasi Washington among its alumni—is now a mentor to musicians at every stage in their careers. Since the release of his last full-length, Happysad, and Bridges, Kiefer has also produced three beats for Anderson .Paak’s albums Ventura and Oxnard

Superbloom EP lands September 20, with “10,000 Days” streaming over at Bandcamp, and pre-order here

Download Jubilee’s Electrifying Set from Bass Coast 2019

You can now experience Jubliee‘s electrifying set from boutique festival Bass Coast 2019.

As anticipated, Jubilee’s set was one of the standouts from this year’s annual event, mixing her customary Miami bass, electro, and bass-heavy beats with the nostalgia of legendary cuts like the Todd Terry Club Mix of Everything but the Girl’s “Missing,” which opens this download. It’s 80 minutes that sucks you in and doesn’t let you go.

Bass Coast is a thoughtfully curated boutique music and art festival that takes place each July in Merritt, BC, Canada. The 11th edition was another stellar success, and details of next year’s edition will be announced soon. More information can be found here, with the mix downloading below, or here for EU readers due to GDPR restrictions.

YUNGMORPHEUS and Fumitake Tamura (a.k.a Bun) Team Up for Leaving Records Album

YUNGMORPHEUS and Fumitake Tamura (a.k.a Bun) will present Mazal, their first collaborative album, for Leaving Records, out August 9.

After meeting online through a mutual respect for each others’ work, the two linked up at a brief 2017 Low End Theory performance and then began trading files back and forth over the next two years. Mazal, its title taken from a Japanese word meaning “a mixture of things,” is the result, described by the Los Angeles label as “a cohesive yet varied album documenting stressful trials, psychedelic endeavours, and copious inhalations of marijuana.”

We’re told that Tamura’s experimental beats provide an “exquisitely warped” foundation for the project. Of his composition process, he writes: “I wanted to make music that I haven’t made before. For example, I would subtract some sounds to make the song unbalanced or unstable, and then I would look for new sounds to re-balance the track in a different way. Also, because the rapping is dynamic, I wanted to keep the beats minimal. I tried to make a new kind of feeling by balancing those two elements.”

YUNGMORPHEUS writes: “There’s a lot of different sonic textures in there that I usually don’t find myself gravitating towards, but it felt fire to step outside of a lot of unnecessary comfort zones.”

Vocals were recorded in Brooklyn and Los Angeles between 2016-2018 using a Tascam DR-40, and the lyrics are full of cutting observations on American life. The album’s first half is steeped in a persistent, paranoiac dread, while the back half tackles more earthly matters on funkier cuts like “General Barca” and the jazzy, tranquil interlude “Stay Twistin’.”

Mazal LP lands August 9, with streams available over at Bandcamp now.

Hélder Russo “Dreaming”

Hélder Russo‘s new EP is sure to move the coldest hearts. Emotionally-driven and transparent, the message behind Onírico is pervasive and evocative: dreamy atmospheres of love and caress, exotic rhythms, and tropical soundscapes.

Opener “Dreaming” is another exploration into Russo’s deep and uncharted territories. The washy pads, evocative of moving string ensembles, are laden with sub-bass notes and a Latin disco beat that make up an atmosphere that is as gentle as it is assertive, as spiritual as it is physical. It gets flipped by London-based Leonidas for an alternative reading.

The youngest of 10, Russo is part of a family rooted in Ilha da Praia in Cabo Verde. He is one of Portugal’s most authentic talents in the native electronic music scene, with a growing discography that displays a keen sense of sincerity, originality, and technical perfectionism.

In support of the EP, out now on Percebes Música, we’re offering “Dreaming” as one of today’s free downloads, available via the button below, or here for EU readers due to  GDPR restrictions.

Ross From Friends is Back with New Brainfeeder EP

Photo: Fabrice Bourgelle

Ross From Friends will release a new EP via Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder next month.

While the UK artist, real name Felix Clary Weatherall, dedicated his debut album, 2018’s Family Portrait, in part to his parents, new 12″ Epiphany is an homage to, and named after, his sister, “one of the most important role models I have,” he says. The three tracks are sleeker and tougher than Family Portrait, but with his signature warmth and personality.

Weatherall recorded the EP in the wake of the release of Family Portrait and constructed it with the dancefloor in mind. The move to a new studio—“I finally got a place with a window,” he says—coupled with the fact that he was also “getting into a lot of woodwork, DIY, and making a lot of the furniture in the space,” precipitated a different approach in process.

“I constantly wanted to take a step back and think about the structures in a more conventional sense. I spent a lot of time making it sound like it could be played in a club, particularly with ‘Phantom Ratio.’ I wanted to challenge myself to make a weird club track with that one.”

For the title-track in particular, he drew inspiration from sci-fi movies. “I was watching a bunch of these films like ‘The Thirteenth Floor,’ ‘The Matrix,’ and ‘Fifth Element,’ and I wanted the release to play on the idea of a desolate physical and social landscape becoming a utopia from a communal epiphany, or revolution.”

The artwork is by pro skateboarder, entrepreneur, and artist Chad Muska.

Epiphany is released on 12” and digital via Brainfeeder on August 16. Meanwhile, you can stream “The Revolution” in full via the player below.

Octo Octa to Release “Spiritual and Nature-Connected” New Album

Octo Octa (a.k.a Maya Bouldry-Morrison) will release her third studio album, Resonant Body, this September.

Resonant Body is the US artist’s “most spiritual and nature-connected” work. Bouldry-Morrison recorded the songs at her cabin in New Hampshire in order to channel the resonance of the forest, the beauty of the river, and the energy from the rituals she conducts within it. It was written and produced at the end of December 2018, after a year of near-constant touring, in order to process through art an intense and magical year of change.

The album is the second release on T4T LUV NRG, the new label co-run by Bouldry-Morrison and Eris Drew, following Drew’s June mixtape, Raving Disco Breaks Vol. 1. It draws on the same themes of togetherness (“Power To The People”), embodiment (“Spin Girl, Let’s Activate!”), love (“Deep Connections”), healing (“My Body Is Power”), and survival (“Can You See Me?”) that animated her For Lover’s EP via Technicolour, released earlier this year.

The artwork was created by Maya’s partner, Brooke, who painted two canvases after a magical day-trip Brooke, Eris, and Maya took earlier this year on the “Sweet Trail” in New Hampshire. 50 percent of the profits from the album will go to the Sylvia Rivera Law Project.

Resonant Body LP lands September 6, with “Spin Girl, Let’s Activate!” streaming below.

Joe Returns with Cómeme Debut

Joe will release a new EP on Cómeme

Joe is known for his idiosyncratic, floor-filling productions for Hessle Audio, particularly for tracks like “Slope” and “Tail Lift.” He began releasing in 2009, and has been sporadic with his outings since, all the while hiding his identity with a dimly-lit press shot, few interviews, and a nigh-on dormant Facebook account.

Get Centred is the UK artist’s first foray outside of a UK label. It sees him continuing to “surprise, delight, and ignite the dance” with a trio of tracks that are as unusual as they are elegant, and also “extremely playable,” the label explains. His last release came in 2017.

The EP is the latest addition to a new phase in Cómeme’s label history, initiated by the Solidarity Forever series and followed by releases from Katerina, Mujaji The Rain, Gladkazuka, and also label head Matias Aguayo’s Support Alien Invasion.

Ahead of the EP’s September 6 release, you can stream “Get Centred” below, on which Joe uses shifting arpeggios and trippy crescendos to cross the artificial barriers between body, mind, and soul.

Cameo Blush Debut Next on Nick Höppner’s Touch From A Distance

The sixth release on Nick Höppner‘s Touch From A Distance comes from Cameo Blush, the project of John Dunk from London.

Dunk is the saxophonist in Ross From Friends’ live set, and this is his debut solo outing.

Murky Waters is oozing with emotional depth and purposeful confidence. It takes cues from masters of abstract electronica like Isolée, Lusine, and Boards Of Canada, creating an audible allegory of longing and sensuality.

Cameo Blush is currently working on a live set which he will premiere at this year’s Field Maneuvers festival.

Touch From A Distance, launched in 2018, has put out releases from Brother Nebula, Desert Sound Colony, and Opal Sunn.

Murkey Waters EP lands August 16, with clips below.

Podcast 602: Microhm

Microhm is an alias of Leslie García, an experimental sound artist associated with Static Discos, where she released her debut album—oscillating between noise, minimal wave, ambient, and techno—last year. Raised in Tijuana, Mexico, she went on to study integral design, a strange hybrid of industrial and graphic design, but left the career early to begin working in the media arts domain.

Garcia’s work sits at the intersection between art, science, and technology. Alongside Paloma López, with whom she also works as Logar-Decay, she forms Interspecifics Collective (meaning “arising between species”), giving sonic shape to different species, from bacteria to human brain waves, to create unearthed ambient soundscapes. At Mutek 2017, Interspecifics performed “Space data and noise,” an eerie ambient arrangement of NASA radio transmissions and other sounds from space, and followed it up a year later with sounds from organisms and physical phenomena that typically go unacknowledged.

In contrast to García’s club-focused Latam Tapes DJ alias, Microhm is more experimental and wide-reaching. The project sees her developing electronic music from a perspective of abstraction and improvisation to create a changing and dislocated sound. Besides last year’s debut album, as Microhm she’s also released Inmaterial Energy Waves, a 25-minute live ambient mixtape aimed at exorcising negative energies.

Her XLR8R podcast, at one hour in length, was recorded live in her Mexico City studio. It’s choppy and in-your-face, made of “timeless” tracks and with a melancholic slant. In there you’ll find music from Microhm, plus Croatian Amor, Zuli, Jlin, and many others, some much lesser-known. “…it will be helpful if you listen to this with open hears, not trying to find something you are familiar with, but rather looking for the beauty of the unexpected unfolding in front of you,” García says.

What have you been up to recently?

I’m the in production process right now, working on new material as Microhm and also as Logar-Decay with Paloma López.

How did you find your way into music?

I started as a sound artist, making sound out of DIY instruments, soundscapes, code, and any experimental source I could find. I’m still producing this kind of work as part of the Interspecifics collective, using bio signals from living organisms, brain waves, and all kinds of signals that can be interfaced with electronic music instruments. But I’m also playing around with the rules and structures of mainstream music, trying to exercise intuition as a musician.

Where was this particular mix recorded?

This was a live session recorded in one shot at my studio in Mexico City, so it’s just what it is, no retouching, no fixing, just a serendipity of events. And some mastering by my friend Yaka.

What can we expect?

A lot of mashups, a broken narrative, and key mixing, but it will be helpful if you listen to this with open ears, not trying to find something you are familiar with, but rather looking for the beauty of the unexpected unfolding in front of you.

How did you choose the tracks that you included?

These are melancholic tracks, from different genres, but they maintain in many ways this feeling of something that is new but old at the same time; for me, these are timeless tracks.

Is there a wider vision behind it?

I was thinking a lot of the radio, but as a time-traveling machine, and going back and forward in time using this sonic tool that is capable of taking us to places that don’t even exist, but make us feel like they do.

How does the podcast compare to one of your club sets?

My club sets are more focused on beat-matching and maintaining the energy levels, although this depends a lot on the context. I use another alias for the club, Latam Tapes, which focuses on music produced under the umbrella of Latin American diaspora. This mix is more contemplative; it has different energy labels but is more focused on the concept and the narrative.

Speaking more generally, what are your larger goals in music?

I want to continue exploring the possibilities of creating new sounds, and the emotional psychoacoustic implications of music in the human cognition. Perhaps being able to produce something which can create an empathic response in the listener.

What’s next on the horizon?

The second release of Microhm on Static Discos, a new EP from Logar-Decay, and some presentations from Interspecifics in the VNM Festival in Vancouver, plus a series of presentations in Berlin for this winter.

I’m also part of Oris, a new all-female label from Mexico City that is about to release its first various artist, so you will hear fresh new music from us really soon.
