Video: Sound Pellegrino Thermal Team “Bass Face”

Top-notch DJs, in-demand remixers, and currently running one of the most forward-thinking dance music labels out there, Sound Pellegrino label dons Teki Latex and Orgasmic have built quite a reputation for themselves in the two years they’ve been active. However, the apparent absence of original material from the duo has been a little conspicuous. Enter “Bass Face,” the pair’s brand-new, debut single. Representing the first original release from the Sound Pellegrino Thermal Team (a moniker previously reserved for Teki Latex’s and Orgasmic’s back-to-back DJ sets), “Bass Face” is as cheeky a song as its name suggests. Teki Latex perfectly describes the premise in the press release: “Trapped in a mind-dimension strip club, controlled by a bionic wizard robot rendition of Jermaine Dupri, Orgasmic displays iPad lazers and 808-fueled riddims while I order my troops to show me their “bass face” if they want to get out of there alive.” If that isn’t clear enough, the duo went ahead and made a video that tackles the imagery perfectly, which you can check out up above. “Bass Face” is out now backed with a b-side homage to Larry David, called “Pretty Pretty Good.”

Martyn to Release New Single Via Brainfeeder

We couldn’t have predicted this pairing to save our lives, and yet, Washington, D.C. dubstepper Martyn working with Flying Lotus’ beat-centric Brainfeeder label makes an odd sort of sense to us. On August 1, the two electronic music powerhouses will join forces and drop a three-song digital single (12″ vinyl release is on September 5), which is apparently the first taste of Martyn’s forthcoming sophomore album for Brainfeeder, entitled Ghost People. Talking about the fresh sounds of his new music, the producer says, “People just like a certain sound and then they want more of that. But then when you give them more, they suddenly think you’re boring or one-dimensional. The best way to handle it is to not really listen to people, and just dictate what you want to do. Everyone has their angle, and puts on their mask forward. People use a shell to show who they want to be.” We’ll be able to hear Martyn’s new angle shortly, but until then, you can check out the artwork and tracklist for his “Masks” / “Viper” single below.

Stream Brian Eno’s New Album

Legendary electronic music pioneer Brian Eno has released his second LP for the Warp imprint, Drums Between the Bells, today, and has gone ahead and made a stream of the whole album available online. Eno’s newest effort matches his penchant for crafting unique audio landscapes with the words of accomplished poet Rick Holland (both pictured above) over the course of 16 total tracks. You can hear the results in their entirety over at Wired now.

Kompakt Announces Details For Total 12

It’s that time of year again: the days are getting longer (at least here on the West Coast), the summer tours are starting to shape up, and, yes, Kompakt has finalized the tracklist for its annual compilation of the best previously released and unreleased gems from its talented family. The 12th Total compilation, due August 16, looks a lot leaner than its predecessors of the past few years, claiming only 12 (coincidence?) titles to its name, making it the first version of the comp to come as a single CD (or double-LP) since 2003’s Total 5. Still, as can be expected from the series, most of the Kompakt heavyweights are accounted for with contributions from Matias Aguayo (pictured above), Superpitcher, Gui Borrato, Wolfgang Voigt, Michael Mayer, Gus Gus, and The Modernist finding their way onto the newest edition. You can check the artwork and full tracklist below. (via Resident Advisor)

Listen to Untold’s and Samuel Chase’s Debut EP as Dreadnought

It was just over a month ago when we reported that UK bass music badman Untold had unveiled a new collaboration with Samuel Chase (of Samuel and the Dragon), called Dreadnought. Well, it didn’t take too long for the four selections that make up the pair’s debut to become available for you to stream in all their dirty, experimental-pop glory. You can listen to the complete Caroline EP, which saw a 12″ vinyl release last week, below. (via FACT)

Podcast 205: Nguzunguzu

XLR8R has been gleefully following the exploits of globally minded bass outfit Nguzunguzu for quite some time, but it appears as though 2011 might be the year when the LA-based duo comes into its own. Today marks the release of the Timesup EP, which is not only the pair’s latest collection of energetic, R&B-flavored tunes, but also the first salvo from the newly christened Fade to Mind label, an imprint headed up by Kingdom that Nguzunguzu also has a hand in running. (In case you missed it, go here for all the details on Fade to Mind and go here to listen to a couple of selections from the Timesup EP.) In the past few years, Nguzunguzu has shown a particular talent for assembling DJ mixes—people are still talking about the “Moments in Love” mixtape—so we figured now would be the perfect time for the pair to put together the latest installment of the XLR8R podcast series. The mix leans heavy on Nguzunguzu’s own productions, but weaves in inventive efforts from like-minded producers such as Night Slugs’ Bok Bok and Jam City, along with Fade to Mind cohorts Kingdom, Total Freedom, and Rizzla. Add in a few cuts of warped R&B, polyrhythmic tropical bass, and leftfield grime, and you’ve got another top-shelf Nguzunguzu DJ session.

Marco Del Horno and T.Williams “Brown Leather Chair”

This track stems from a collaboration between Marco del Horno and T.Williams, two burgeoning UK producers who at one time had plans to craft an EP together. Unfortunately, the EP never came to fruition, but now the pair has decided to give away the sole track which resulted from their partnership rather than let it gather virtual dust in some hard drive. The intriguingly titled “Brown Leather Chair” sits nicely between the producers’ respective styles, blurring the details as to which artist we can attribute the dark, pumping drums or chopped and glitched chords to. One thing Horno and Williams seem to collectively acknowledge is that a song like this is most potent when left to its rhythmic elements, which may explain why each drop placed throughout “Brown Leather Chair” seems to lead us right back to the track’s powerfully deep, brooding drums.

Deepchord Hash-Bar Loops

What is there to say about Deepchord that hasn’t already been said? For close to three decades, the producer and mastering engineer behind the now-solo affair, Rod Modell, has been ably mining the depths of techno’s core sounds through a dubwise filter, and he reliably brings up gold. Hash-Bar Loops, his latest LP, is, no exception.

Modell’s gifts are many. He’s an expert arranger and programmer, so when the dubby, static-filled “Stars” blends painlessly into the more thumping “Sofitel,” the listener feels less like they’re sitting through a track-to-track-to-track relay and more like they’re experiencing the hazy Amsterdam stay that supposedly inspired Modell to make the record. But that’s also partially due to the lo-fi, live-sounding vibe that threads each of these 12 tracks together, and it’s a welcome change from dub-techno’s often austere, clinical approach to production. Modell’s bass sounds aren’t meant to bash you over the head or wallop you in the chest, and it’s a testament to his years of studio wisdom that he employs his low-end with such gorgeous restraint. On “Tangier,” a subtle, icy synth provides a light rhythm, but the kick drum sounds more like the gentle chug of a train passing than something intended to stir a heaving dancefloor. Sure, you could crank these up, make your speakers ache, and test the limits of your bowels, but on a chill ride like this, why would you want to?

Marble Announces Forthcoming EP From Canblaster

The Parisian party wunderkind Canblaster has been tapped by the still-fresh Marble imprint to deliver the label’s sixth release in the just over three months since its founding. Totem, which marks the third EP from the burgeoning 21-year-old producer, will include three new expertly crafted originals in the vein of sparkling house Canblaster has come to be known for (including a collaboration with fellow Club Cheval cohort Sam Tiba), alongside one re-edit from label co-founder Surkin. No audio available to share yet from the upcoming release, but those expecting bubbling, dancefloor-oriented vibes are definitely on the right track. You’ll find Totem‘s artwork and tracklist, along with snippets of three tracks, below.

01 Stoned Totem
02 Air Totem
03 Delphes (feat. Sam Tiba)
04 Totem (Surkin “Gravity” Edit)

Miracle Fortress “Raw Spectacle (Pantha du Prince Remix)”

Montreal’s Miracle Fortress (pictured above) makes perfectly pleasant pop music, with songs that combine the seaside breeziness of the Beach Boys with the radio-friendly synth-pop stylings of Bronski Beat and other like-minded ’80s groups. We’re not complaining about any of those things, but it all adds up to a formula that isn’t exactly what XLR8R tends to cover. Enter German producer Pantha du Prince, who has applied his trademark melodic techno approach to “Raw Spectacle,” giving the track just enough dancefloor oomph to land in our downloads section. The remix keeps the song’s woozy vocals largely intact, but Pantha du Prince dials down the synths and inserts a steady techno pulse, creating a sort of Balearic pop tune that is undeniably pleasing to the ear. The original “Raw Spectacle” first appeared on the Was I The Wave? full-length, which came out a couple of months back, and those looking for even more Miracle Fortress music will be happy to know that he’s made two non-album cuts available for free download, which you can grab after the jump.
