SND’s Mark Fell to Release Sophomore Solo Album

One half of UK experimental minimalists SND (pictured above), sound artist Mark Fell (on the right, above) has announced his forthcoming follow-up album to 2004’s solo release Ten Types of Elsewhere, entitled Multistability. The 17-track full-length record will be released on December 7 through the austere Raster-Noton label, and covers some fairly heady ideas. Fell’s record is said to be “primarily an exploration of erratic and non-regular rhythmic pattern… combining meticulous synthetic chordal layering with convoluted, chaotic yet fundamentally engaging temporal structures,” as well as a practice of the property from which its name is taken (a.k.a. “Systems that are neither stable nor totally instable, but that alternates between two or more mutually exclusive states over time.”). Until we get a chance to hear what that means for Fell’s music, check out the tracklist for his Multistability album below. (via FACT)

Banjo Or Freakout “Since We Last Met”

Earlier this summer, recent DFA signees ndf released the warm night air that was “Since We Last Met,” a “12 single graced by a Ricardo Villalobos remix on the flip. The track is a vivid portrait of summer love and such a strong single that a well-structured album is surely in sight. In the meantime London-based artist Banjo Or Freakout has offered a reminder of ndf’s potential, covering “Since We Last Met” with more of an indie aesthetic than an electronic one. Banjo Or Freakout’s piano version of the melody is particularly notable, bringing the subtleties of the original to the foreground. Synth and vocal layerings surround the rest of the song, keeping all the nostalgia of the original without being repetitive.

Bubblin’: John Talabot

Who:John Talabot
Where: Barcelona, Spain

This young Spaniard’s true identity remains a mystery—the name John Talabot was borrowed from his former school—but there’s no question that the producer’s work is top-shelf. The slow-motion house of “Sunshine,” bearing traces of disco and Detroit techno, first put him on the map in 2009 and even won over the Pitchfork crowd, a process bolstered by the single’s 2010 reissue with remixes from Blondes and his friends from Delorean. Artists like Glasser and The xx have taken notice and enlisted Talabot for remixes, his own acid-flavored “Mathilda’s Dream” 12″ recently dropped on Permanent Vacation, and a follow-up on Young Turks is in the works, as is a full-length album.

Teleseen “By Many Names”

Brooklyn’s Teleseen has been involved in a number of endeavors in recent years, including recordings for documentary films and a project called Majoni with South African dancehall vocalist Teba and UK producer Dorian Concept. After the release of two full-length albums in the last four years, Teleseen has readied a new EP, Mandrake, for release on November 19. The EP finds Teleseen builds on his love of reggae with dubwise explorations into house, dancehall, and Afrobeat. We have the track “By Many Names” here for download, a dubby piece of tropical synth humidity that bubbles and froths.

yuk. “greenflash(ritual)”

A lot of phrases get thrown around haphazardly within the electronic music spectrum, collage artist being one of them, but in the case of LA-based Chad Valencia (a.k.a. yuk.), it fits perfectly. On “greenflash(ritual),” Chad shows his ability to create distorted ambient sound collages with a gritty sizzle that holds all the different elements together, utilizing no computers in the process. The track begins as a slowly bubbling mash of noise with sounds trickling up from beneath the dense layers until, a little past halfway through, a lazy and distorted rhythm begins and pushes methodically alongside a swirling vocal sample. yuk.’s newest release, a d w a, where you’ll find “greenflash(ritual)” alongside 11 others, including one featuring XLR8R favorite Teebs, can be found digitally via LA’s tape-music mecca Leaving Records. Looks like the original pressing of 100 cassettes from the My Hollow Drum imprint has already sold out, but luckily there’s probably enough tape noise on all these tracks that we’ll be able to get the same feeling from the mp3s. Genesis P-Orridge Leaves Throbbing Gristle

Pioneering industrial group Throbbing Gristle suprised a lot of people when they reformed to play live and record new material a few years back, and now comes the sad news that one of the members, Genesis P-Orridge, has decided to no longer perform with the group. With a string of dates left for the group in Europe, this weekend’s show in Prague has been cancelled, but the remaining three members will be performing at the upcoming Genderbender Festival in Bologna, Italy and at the Casa Musica in Portugal under the name X-TG. The remaining members, Cosey Fanni Tutti, Peter Christopherson, and Chris Carter, had this to say about their upcoming performances: “We hope fans will appreciate and enjoy this new project and the trio is looking forward to performing exciting new and radical electronic musics together.” For more info check the Throbbing Gristle site. Watch the Video for Katy B’s “Lights On” feat. Ms. Dynamite

Having hopped the dubstep wagon earlier this year with songs like the Benga-produced single “Katy On A Mission,” Katy B‘s new mission appears to be pop stardom. This new one, called “Lights On,” made by Rinse FM boss Geeneus, also features a turn from UK urban princess Ms. Dynamite. The song is clearly in debt to the break-out success of Ms. Dynamite’s collaboration with producer DJ Zinc on “Wile Out,” and her verse here is a clear highlight, as her double-time rhymes and vocal confidence offers a potent mixture of Jamaican dancehall styles and American pop hooks.

Panasonic Discontinues the Technics SL-1200 Turntable

Over the past year, forums have rumored about the imminent death of the historic Technics 1200 turntable, but now Panasonic has officially driven the knife into the heart of the proverbial DJ coffin. Officially announced October 20 and published yesterday in The Tokyo Reporter, Panasonic said that it will discontinue the production of the Technics SL-1200MK6 analog turntable, the SH-EX1200 analog audio mixer, the RP-DH1200, and RP-DJ1200 stereo headphones. This should hardly come as a surprise to DJs who have watched the analog age increasingly replaced by a digital one, and there’s no official word yet about the fate of the other 1200 models, but it’s not looking good for the turntable that has long been celebrated as the industry standard.
