Stream Two New Videos from Matmos

In support of the release of the Plastic Anniversary LP, out now via via Thrill Jockey Records, Matmos has revealed two music videos from the project: “Thermoplastic Riot Shield” (directed by the band) and “Breaking Bread” (animated and directed by Robert Syrett).

Each sound of this the album is made exclusively with plastic, and it serves as a follow-up to 2016’s Ultimate Care II, on which all the sounds were generated by a washing machine. It’s also a celebration for Drew Daniel and M.C. Schmidt’s 25th anniversary, and features Greg Saunier, Mitchell Brown, Harry Walker, Jon Leidecker, Brooks Kossover, Eric Holdhusen, Jeremy Carnagey, Port Nugent, Bret Allen, Ethan Potthoff, Wyatt Scott, and Montana’s Whitefish Highschool Bulldogs.

The animation of Syrett on the “Breaking Bread” video takes focus on the album’s main subject matter of environmental destruction, with Matmos shooting with a singular angle for “Thermoplastic Riot Shield” that centers around the police riot shield used to create the song.

L’Impératrice “Some Paradise”

Charles de Boisseguin and his L’Impératrice band will release their debut album, Matahari, next month—”kind of a tribute to the night in its nocturnal way. We really tried to create an atmosphere of the night,” he says.

Boisseguin started the band as a solo project but over the years it has blossomed into a six-piece that’s now crafted a seamless collection of French electro-pop disco songs for their debut.

If the album has an air of that French charm it’s not only because of the band members’ nationality but also because of the surroundings Boisseguin grew up in—being born in Paris but growing up near Versailles, in St Germain en Laye. “This city has played a role in our musical style because of all the artists who emerged from there: Air, Phoenix, Etienne de Crécy, Alex Gopher, and Daft Punk. They created what we know as the French Touch, which I grew up with as a kid,” he explains.

Whilst the album succeeds in capturing a nocturnal quality—its shimmering synthesisers and dancefloor-ready grooves scream nightclub—and a feeling of coming to life, it also possesses a radiating pop essence that seems to exist outside of a time and place—where night creeps into morning and the day soon bleeds back into night.

We’re told that the album shifts between the tone of a long-lost 1970s disco masterpiece and a futuristic exploration of electronic pop. The band claims that “albums that sold 500 copies in the 1970s are the records that interest us most,” but we’re told to expect a debut destined for much wider appeal.

Matahari lands April 12 via Microqlima, and in support of the release you can download “Some Paradise” in full via the WeTransfer button below, or here for EU readers due to temporary GDPR restrictions.

L’Impératrice will perform on May 2 in London, with information and tickets here

Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder Signs Salami Rose Joe Louis

Credit: Cinque Mubarak

Salami Rose Joe Louis is the latest signee with Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder label, launching with new single “Nostalgic Montage.”

“Nostalgic Montage” is sonically minimal and lyrically pensive, presenting dreamy vocals, angular guitar, dynamic bass, and hazy keys for a walk through experimental dream pop. We’re told that it serves as a precursor to forthcoming music on Brainfeeder later this year.

The California artist has previously released two albums on Hot Record Société, in 2016 and 2017.

Coinciding with the release of the new single, she has also announced that she will open up for The Cinematic Orchestra on the group’s headlining Europe/UK tour this month.

“This is truly a dream come true on every level,” says Salami Rose Joe Louis. “Many of the artists on Brainfeeder have been my musical heroes for years and to join a collective comprising of such visionaries is an ultimate fantasy. I greatly admire the fearlessness and creative integrity of the artists on Brainfeeder: they are willing to take risks, ask important questions, and let their freakiness shine through, which to me is paramount and inspires a generation to challenge the script.”

Disasterpeace “Mycellium” (Derek Piotr Remix)

Derek Piotr has remixed Disasterpeace‘s “Mycellium.”

The original track is taken from Disasterpeace’s Hyper Light Drifter album, out now on Bludhoney Records. Richard Vreeland, the LA-based man behind Disasterpeace, reached out to Piotr about a remix, and he chose “Mycellium.”

“He considers the track more of a Piotr production at this point, and less of a straight remix,” Piotr explains. “He give his blessing and says further, “…it’s not even discernible as being related to the original, it’s a totally new thing in my opinion. It’s your track now.”

You can download Piotr’s remix via the WeTransfer button below, or here for EU readers due to GDPR restrictions.

The seven-track LP is the Montreal-based multi-disciplinary artist’s sophomore album, after 2017’s Tereza, which also appeared on Infinite Machine. We’re told that it “activates a new topology: that of the parasite,” and is composed in three distinct and interchangeable (in)acts: I. Tereza + Molloy; II. Zabriskie + Équilibre de la terreur + Xen; III. Limite I + II

It follows W3C’s Event Horizon and Tomás Urquieta’s Dueños de Nada on the Chilean label.

Benoît Pioulard and Ann Arbor’s Sean Curtis Patrick Team Up for Collaborative LP

Seattle’s Thomas Meluch (a.k.a Benoît Pioulard) and Ann Arbor’s Sean Curtis Patrick have released their first collaborative ambient LP, Avocationals

Out today on Portland’s Beacon Sound across vinyl and digital formats, the album derives its tonal representation from the many shipwrecks that occurred in the Great Lakes during the 20th century and the spirits of those who passed with them. It’s said to explore a hazy world with experimental aesthetics at every root, and features synthesizers, reel-to-reel tape machines, field recordings, guitar, and processed vocals.

The album was mastered by Rafael Anton Irisarri at Black Knoll, NYC, with the vinyl run limited to 300. The graphite, charcoal, and collage cover art has been contributed by Sean Curtis Patrick’s father, Lynn Curtis Patrick, titled “The Sinking Of The Bradley” (1983).

Benoît Pioulard and Sean Curtis Patrick add: “An avocational is an amateur diver who assists in rescue, investigation, and salvage relating to watercraft disasters. Thousands of freighters and small ships sank during the mid-20th century golden age of shipping on the Great Lakes; this album is about nine of them.”

Pioulard, who weaves natural sounds and textures of decay into his vague-pop songs, has contributed albums to Kranky, Beacon Sound, and Morr Music.

Sean Curtis Patrick is a visual artist, photographer, adventurer, and musician. In 2018, he directed and soundtracked a documentary about the devastation of Puerto Rico after the hurricanes of 2017.

Gold Panda Drops New Album as DJ Jenifa

Derwin Dicker—Gold Panda—has today released a new album, Jag Trax, as DJ Jenifa, a new music project.

The release is comprised of nine hip-hop- and house-influenced cuts, all largely based around single looped samples, kick drums, and an MPC. The tracks initially came to be during the productive writing spell that also produced his third album, 2015’s Good Luck And Do Your Best

“When I did the last record in 2015, I made a track for a laugh,” says Dicker. “I make lots of tracks just for me, I suppose. I made a track about Chelmsford, where I was living at the time. It was about going out there in a white shirt, blue jeans, brown shoes which is like a dress code you need to get into clubs ‘cos you can’t go in with a hoody. I say clubs, I mean like, an O’Neils or some kind of Wetherspoons-style nightspot which is open till 3am. Those kind of places that exist in suburbia.

“So I made a tune called ‘Dresscode’. It appeared at the end of the ‘In My Car’ video [from Good Luck And Do Your Best] and then I realised I had loads of these tunes just lying around and put them together.”

The record garners its name from Dicker’s mode of transport at the time, also featured in the video for ‘In My Car.’ “It’s called Jag Trax because I bought an old 2003 S-Type Jaguar. It’s kind of like driving a luxury armchair. I bought it from my neighbour. I would make these tracks that I could just play loud in the Jag, like when I was driving to Luke Abbott’s studio to mix Good Luck And Do Your Best. They were songs that I could just bang out on the motorway and make the journey go quicker.”

As for DJ Jenifa, the  name is from a De La Soul track from 3 Feet High and Rising called “Jenifa Taught Me (Derwin’s revenge).” “I’ve always been into that album. It’s a sample-heavy record, and this too is done in a hip-hop spirit, I suppose,” Dicker explains.

The album follows Dicker’s debut collaboration with Jas Shaw of Simian Mobile Disco.
