XLR8R Launches the Seventh Edition of XLR8R+ with Tracks From Robert Dietz, Forest Drive West, and Julia Govor

The seventh edition of XLR8R+ features exclusive and previously unreleased tracks from Robert Dietz, Forest Drive West, and Julia Govor, plus artwork by Jamie Gorman.

Kicking off this month’s offering is Robert Dietz who delivers “Futon Flair,” a driving house cut with lush melodies and intricate pad work. The Frankfurt artist is joined by Forest Drive West, one of bass music’s most exciting figures. “Core” was produced in 2013 and aims to “capture an old-school aesthetic with modern production values aimed at the dance floor.” Finally, Julia Govor closes the package with “TT3,” made after Amsterdam Dance Event 2016 and inspired by legendary engineer Dave Smith. The artwork for the seventh edition is created by London’s Jamie Gorman, founder of AnOddReality studio.

Once again, we’ve also included a 50-track Spotify playlist featuring tracks inspired by this month’s offering and arriving from all areas of the sonic spectrum.

XLR8R+007 is available to download as a package to XLR8R+ subscribers for one month only, featuring the three tracks in both WAV and MP3 formats, a dedicated zine, and wallpaper artwork for both desktop and phone.

Tottenham-Based Radio Station Threads Launches Next Week

New Tottenham-based radio station Threads will launch on January 25.

Run by some of the team behind the London-based DIY station 199radio, Threads will look to curate a “unique selection of underground, cutting-edge music, while providing a platform for a range of socially and politically-focused talk-based content.” Listeners to the new station can expect to hear music from the likes of Chaos Theory, Timothy J. Fairplay, Jerome Hill, Liquid Ritual, Loose Lips, Graham Dunning, Ireen Amnes, Faux Naïf, Rommek, and Sisu, among others. The station will also feature a second stream, Threads*, which will play host to a sister studio situated in Berlin, alongside an array of content from across the world.

Threads will launch with a party at The Cause—the venue the station is situated in—on the evening of Thursday, January 24, featuring live experimental electronics, spoken word, punk, stand-up comedy, and some of the station’s DJs, including Ariadne’s Labyrinth, Colder Tech Support, Daniel John, Fiscal Cliff, GarethMain, Human Pet, Interrupt feat. MC Natty Campbell, Kyle Monologue, LKF b2b Medallion Man, Marie Malarie, Repeat Beat Poet, and Timothy J. Fairplay.

Frieder Nagel “They Kept Walking”

Tomorrow, InFiné Music will release a new mini-album from German artist Frieder Nagel.

Titled Distract Robots, the album will be Nagel’s debut release, following a long and storied career working behind the scenes managing projects in theatres and clubs for artists such as David August and Daniel Brandt (Brandt Brauer Frick), among others. In the live arena, Nagel has also performed with the German Symphony Orchestra and Philharmonie Essen, as well as an acclaimed show for Boiler Room.

Musically, Distract Robots is an otherworldly treat; its five tracks take the listener down a constantly morphing auditory wormhole full of light, darkness, and cosmic bliss, opening with the tense, searing synths of beat-driven cut “They Kept Walking.” From there, the listener is presenting with a set of dystopic ballads and pensive, melancholic outings that carry deep, emotive cores. Distract Robots is a debut of staggering details and depth, and one that warrants many return visits.

Ahead of tomorrow’s release, you can download the opening track via WeTransfer below, with the record available for pre-order here.

Nils Frahm Returns with ‘Encores 2’ EP

Nils Frahm has detailed his upcoming Encores 2 EP, a companion to 2018’s  All Melody LP and Encores 1, which arrived in June.

The four-track release forms the second part of Encores, a series of three releases each with their own distinct musical style and theme, perhaps even as a triple album, all taken from the All Melody sessions. While Encores 1 focused on an acoustic pallet of sounds with just a solo piano and harmonium, Encores 2 explores a more ambient landscape, the pinnacle of which is the 12-minute showpiece, “Spells,” we’re told.

Tracklisting

01. Sweet Little Lie

02. A Walking Embrace

03. Talisman

04. Spells

KIKOK Album Debut Next on Fatima Yamaha’s Magnetron Music

Fatima Yamaha‘s Magnetron Music will release the debut album of KIKOK, the solo project of Pavel Fedoseev.

Fedoseev was born in Kudymkar, the administrative centre and town in the territory Komi-Permyak Okrug, within the federal subject Perm Krai. He lives an almost fully autonomous existence that requires him to travel 22 hours straight by train to Moscow. “Perm is a disgusting city,” Fedoseev says. “It’s dirty, boring, and rough. I’m afraid of walking outside; that’s why I sit at home and watch movies and make music.”

Fedoseev is best known as the drummer for the band Gnoomes, but now focuses on solo material as KIKOK, a name that translates as “arm leg” in Fedoseev’s native Komi-Permian.

The 10-track release follows KIKOK’s nine-track EP and features “fuller, more realised, and accomplished compositions” as KIKOK as a project found its own groove and identity.

Every component of the album was moulded from playing live electronic instruments. We’re told to expect a “truly electronic project that serves as literal and fantastical escape function for Fedoseev.”

Dave Harrington Shares New Album Track, “Belgrade Fever”

Dave Harrington has released new track, “Belgrade Fever,” the  second single from the upcoming Dave Harrington Group album, Pure Imagination, No Country

“Belgrade Fever” stems from touring the last Dave Harrington Group album, Become Alive, in Europe with longtime collaborators Andrew Fox, Samer Ghadry, and Will Epstein. “We were improvising heavily during the shows, using sound checks as rehearsals and developing new material every night,” Harrison recalls.

“Belgrade Fever” started as one of those improvised pieces and quickly worked its way into the live repertoire. Mid-tour, the group found themselves with a few days in Belgrade, Serbia, and booked some time at a recording studio housed in an old warehouse. They recorded for three days, tracking a fleshed out “Belgrade Fever” and other material that eventually made its way into Pure Imagination, No Country. “This track reminds me of that run through Europe and is the product of the improvising, the mental writing and the chemistry of the band that was on tour that summer,” Harrison adds.

We’re told that the nine-track album exists at a different axis in the same continuum as Harrington’s previous work alongside Nicolas Jaar as Darkside. Harrington uses guitar as a lead voice, sculpting and creating a new core language with vibraphonist Will Shore, synth bassist Andrew Fox, drummer Samer Ghadry, and post-rock polymath Lars Horntveth of Jaga Jazzist. It follows 2016’s Become Alive on Other People.

Toada “Airosa”

Earlier this month, Berlin-based Portuguese producer Toada returned to his Plūma label with his latest EP, Airosa Melanina.

The Toada project, which launched in 2015, is defined by emotive and utterly mesmerizing melodies and intricate, playful rhythms that pull from Northern and Southern European influences. The Airosa Melanina EP reportedly follows some defining personal experiences that lead Toada to reflect on the nature of melanin and its role in shaping “social hierarchies.” The music on the EP is subtle and elegant, ranging from the transfixing grooves of “Airosa” to the drunken rhythms and morphing synth lines of “Melanina.”

In support of the release, Toada has offered up “Airosa” as today’s XLR8R download, available via WeTransfer below. You can pick up the full EP here.
