Podcast 573: Phuong-Dan

Phuong-Dan is best known for his work as resident of Hamburg’s Golden Pudel, one of Europe’s finest club spaces. These associations are in themselves illustrative enough of Phuong-Dan’s reputation; and it’s no stretch to say that you’d likely find his name crop up with regularity were you to ask some educated fans of electronic music to identify today’s most exciting and versatile DJs, especially those deserving of more time in the spotlight. To put it simply, he is a fearless selector with a swelling reputation now almost as grand as the club he calls home.

Born of Vietnamese descent, Phuong-Dan grew up in a small town close to Bonn, Germany, before moving to Hamburg after finishing high school, where he continued his studies. A burgeoning interest in breakdance and hip-hop saw him drawn to turntables: together with a close friend who had similar interests, he began throwing parties around Bonn, intent on just sharing the music he was discovering at flea markets and various small stores around the city. “I did not consider myself as a DJ back then,” he tells XLR8R. As popularity for his events grew,  Phuong-Dan took them to Golden Pudel in 2004, two years after his own relocation.

It was around this time that an interest in Chicago house and Detroit techno began to blossom. His earlier selections in Bonn had broadly covered funk, soul, and jazz, and he’d ventured further into disco in Hamburg; and with its punk origins and encouragement for musical experimentation, Pudel provided a great space for discovering krautrock, electronic avant-garde, wave, industrial, synth-pop, acid, new beat, afro, ambient, fusion, balearic, and more. As a versatility grew, so did an understanding for DJing.

Phuong-Dan has been a regular fixture at Pudel ever since. He ended his first major club night but set up a new one in 2006, named Gatto Musculoso, focusing on diversification; on creating energy on the dancefloor without ever being formulaic. It’s a recipe that he’s since taken to Düsseldorf’s Salon des Amatuers, where he plays regularly, and also to clubs across Europe, as word spreads.

This week’s XLR8R podcast captures this perfectly. The mix begins slowly; a throbbing bass creates a tense atmosphere, building and building for 15 minutes, before Iueke’s “Champion,” one of three focal points of the mix, comes in, presented perfectly for upmost effect. It’s a perfect example of Phuong-Dan’s skills in curation, and a standout moment in a brilliant mix. Grab it now via the WeTransfer button below

What have you been up to recently?

Really enjoying traveling, the chance to play out music, meeting new inspiring people but also spending a lot of time with my close ones, reading and being involved in curatorial projects in Paris and Amsterdam next year.

When and where did you record this mix?

It was recorded just a couple days ago on a very cold and grey day in my apartment in Hamburg.

Is there a particular theme or idea behind it?

Basically there were three recent releases of friends I got inspired by and wanted to include: Black Merlin’s “Cloud,” Iueke’s “Champion” (Version) and Zaliva-D’s “Gone With The Pest” on Amsterdam label Knekelhuis. I went through my shelves on this base and built everything around.

What’s next on the horizon?

I will have a break in January to relax at home and recharge. And yes, being really curious about 2019!

Premiere: Hear an Experimental Vocal Cut from Croatian Amor feat. Soho Rezanejad

As previously announced, Posh Isolation will soon release a new Croatian Amor album feat. Yves Tumor, Jonnie Standish (HTRK), and more.

Croatian Amor is the most eloquent and gentle project of Copenhagen’s Loke Rahbek. We’re told that the album sees Rahbek “realise a nauseating narrative of virtual communication and eschatological programming,” while circling themes of tragedy and comfort to animate a sense of hope.

Alto Aria, Soho Rezanejad, and Jonnine Standish of HTRK each contribute vocals across the album. “Eden 1.1” and accompaniment “Eden 1.2” feature the voices of Frederikke Hoffmeier and Yves Tumor respectively. Familiar faces from Copenhagen are also solicited throughout, and perhaps the album’s most endearing quality is the “space for volatility that all of the collaboration has invited,” the label explains.

Love Means Taking Action, the last Croatian Amor album, landed in 2016, but there have been two EPs, one with Varg, since then.

The cover of Isa features work by artist Amitai Romm.

In support of the release, you can hear “In Alarm Light” featuring Soho Rezanejad, a dark and eerie vocal cut, via Soundcloud below, with the album landing January 25.

Craün “Uto”

Sydney-based Greek artist Aris Hatzidakis (a.k.a. Craün) will release his latest offering, III, via Hush Hush Records on December 28.

Recorded as a musical gift to his daughter, Elektra, III is Hatzidakis’ third release on Hush Hush and his first since the birth of Elektra. It’s an ever-evolving collection of ambient and drone compositions, including recordings of some of Elektra’s first musical instruments, such as bells, chimes, xylophone, shakers, and percussion. III is an immersive listen and one that invites the listener to revel in its intricate details and cinematic moments—a true delight when listened to from start to finish with headphones.

In support of the release, Hatzidakis has offered up “Uto,” a six-and-a-half minute slice of textural ambience, as today’s XLR8R download, available via WeTransfer below.

Ben Klock also recently announced his next PHOTON event, taking place at London’s Prinworks on March 30. This time, Klock will lead the session together with KiNK, who is bringing an exciting live set combining both of his aliases for the first time (KiNK vs Kirilik); Rødhad; Dax J; FJAAK; Georgian artist Newa, who contributed a track to the Klockworks 20 compilation; and Rome’s Goa Club resident Adiel.

Alex Dolby “Wild Yard” (Reprise Mix)

Earlier this month, on December 14, Alex Dolby released his latest album on his own Affekt Recordings.

The album, Dolby’s fourth and titled Fault System, follows a string of 2018 label releases from Aske, Code 701, Holldën, and two various artist EPs, which featured cuts from Benvol, Abstrat, Astrom, and Dark Quadrant, among others. Dolby’s love for analog production shines through on the album, which employs tough, raw rhythms, gut punching low-end frequencies, and dystopian atmospheres to great affect. Fans of gritty club-focused techno will find much to love on Fault System, a 10-track collection of dancefloor artillery.

In support of the album, Dolby has offered up a download of “Wild Yard” (Reprise Mix), a special new edit of a cut originally doing the rounds on the club circuit, with heavy support by Ben Klock. You can download it below, with the album available here.
