Delhia De France “Blank” (Sterling Grove Remix)

Collaborator, producer, songwriter, and visual performer Delhia de France has presented her soulful and dark electronica debut EP Moirai, out now via Robot Koch’s own label Trees and Cyborgs. On remix duties are Sterling Grove, a Montreal-based musical duo that comprises Stephen Robusto and Marc Luciano. You can download the remix of “Blank_” via the WeTransfer button below—or here for EU readers due to temporary GDPR restrictions.

“Blank_” is a stirring and emotive work, written in a state of existential crisis. “Sometimes you enter this zone where everything feels distorted: the relation to yourself and to others, feeling very separated,” said Delhia de France.

Podcast 552: Thomas Fehlmann

Up next in our podcast series is Thomas Fehlmann, the Swiss-born, Berlin-based producer, composer, and electronic dance music pioneer.

After a meeting with Conrad Schnitzler at the Art Academy in Hamburg in 1979, Fehlmann swapped art for music and joined forces with Holger Hiller to co-found vanguard post-punk, electro-pop band Palais Schaumburg, freely connecting disparate extremes as they threw art, disco, minimalism, schmalz, jazz, and funk into the cooking pot. It was during these formative years that Fehlmann began his artistic relationship with Moritz Von Oswald; after the band disbanded in 1984, they started to work as a production team and founded the legendary 3MB with the inclusion of Juan Atkins and Eddie Fowlkes. Together they released three albums on Tresor, with Fehlmann eventually joining in the club’s rotation in 1995 as a resident of Gudrun Gut’s seminal Ocean Club weekly residency.

Fehlmann also quickly found his feet as a solo producer, sharing his early experimental and ambient works as Ready Made. In 1988, he founded Teutonic Beats as a platform to release Detroit-influenced dance tracks, before making acquaintances with Alex Paterson, mastermind of the then-nascent The Orb project. Working collaboratively under this alias, Fehlmann and Paterson established themselves as pioneers of ambient house and wrote their own chapter in electronic dance music history, reaching their momentary climax with their Chill out World! COW album.

As a solo artist, Fehlmann has released six solo albums, with his seventh, titled Los Lagos, scheduled for September release via Kompakt.  The eight-track long-player will be Fehlmann’s fourth for the Cologne-based label and his first since 2010’s Gute Luft. We’re told that it finds him “on fabulous form, embracing chance and exploration with vibrant results.”  Along with the album announcement, Fehlmann also confirmed that he will be winding down his role in The Orb. “It was time to take a turn, follow my heart and head where the sun rises, or sets”, he says.

Fehlmann’s podcast for XLR8R harks back to his Ocean Club radio show days, eschewing genre cues and the “style police” with an eclectic ride through cuts from Madlib, Terrence Dixon, Jan Jelinek, Frank Zappa, and Alice Coltrane. Sit back and enjoy an engaging one-hour adventure.

How has 2018 been for you so far?

Productive and sweet, if I look at my private cosmos, but very disturbing in a wider perspective.

On a practical level, I produced my new record LOS LAGOS that’s going to be released in September on Kompakt. that took some soul searching but I got out of it alive.

And there was the album We Take it From Here, my collaboration with Terrence Dixon. We recorded it together in Detroit last year and it got released by Tresor a couple of months ago.

How does this seventh solo album compare to your earliest work?

Hey, that’s a span of 40 years and I think it’s on you to compare. I do the music and you do the analysis. I don’t like to look in the mirror too often. I’m just happy the drive is strong to produce new stuff.

I understand that you’re winding down your role in The Orb. Can you talk to me about this?

After an intense seven-year year run with The Orb producing six albums, a dozen 12”s, a batch of remixes, and playing over 300 gigs together, we felt it was time to shift focus.

When and where was this mix recorded?

It was recorded in my studio in Berlin on July 11, 2018. A sunny day!

How did you choose the records that you included?

A spontaneous mix of the inspiring, the daring, and the entertaining. It’s new records I bought recently intersected, of course, with some classics that are still kicking me. Basically stuff I’m listening to at home illustrating my splintered passions.

On what equipment did you record it?

I recorded it from my two turntables into Ableton live, took the scissors, and edited it all together.

Was there a particular idea you were looking to convey?

Some cuts are mixed and some of them individually recorded just like when I did the ocean club-radio show with Gudrun Gut. We did over 600 shows together back in the day and sometimes I get the itch to capture that raw angle again to combine disparate styles, decades, using field recordings and just ignore the style police.

So what’s next on the horizon?

I did a soundtrack for an upcoming documentary on the social developments of the 1920’s in Berlin that will be televised in October. It’s called “1929—The Year Babylon” and there’s some new music for plants I’ve done, that is going to be installed in some parts of the botanical gardens in Phoenix, Arizona. And I’m really looking forward to playing a ton of live gigs…

Due to temporary issues regarding the GDPR, EU readers can download the mix here.

Chicago-Based Future Jazz Quintet mindswimmer Detail Debut Album

mindswimmer have released their debut album, titled the future jazz sounds of mindswimmer

mindswimmer is a large improvised Chicago-based future jazz quintet with a sound that floats between genres seamlessly.

the future jazz sounds of mindswimmer is the group’s debut full-length album and arrives on the heels of “elevation,” a most recent single that caught the band some buzz for its scope and ambition. It was also the first release from the band to feature all five members.

This debut album took over eight months to make, starting with a jam session on a fall afternoon in October. It was mastered by Kelly Hibbert of almachrome (J. Dilla, Madlib, Flying Lotus) who, upon hearing the recordings sent to him, marvelled that this music was largely improvised.

Rabit Details New Album, ‘Life After Death’

American music producer and composer Rabit will soon present Life After Death, his third full-length album.

The album was recorded in home studios in Houston, Texas and Paris, France, and is the culmination of two years’ worth of experiments in various forms of synthesis. Like last year’s Les Fleurs Du Mal, the new album marks a “further advancement” in the development of his own musical language.

We’re told that inspiration comes from surrealist art to DJ Screw, Enigma, and Japanese ambient artists like Hiroshi Yoshimura, and that the album has an “exploratory, transcendental core.” The project’s artwork—a cut up mandala—can be seen as a reflection of the artist’s “kaleidoscopic approach” to the release. The label describes it as “alchemical, mysterious, and utterly captivating—yet also futuristic.” It removes Rabit further from his early work for labels like Tri Angle by building himself a “lighter more dreamlike universe.”

Life After Death features guest production from Halcyon Veil artist IVVVO, with mastering by Matt Colton, and original artwork by Christian Velasquez. The album will be available on vinyl and digital formats on October 5 on Halcyon Veil. Meanwhile, you can stream “Rabit – III” via the player below.

Brandon Coleman Album Next on Brainfeeder

Flying LotusBrainfeeder will soon present Resistance, the debut album of keyboard maestro, vocalist, composer, producer, arranger, and astral traveller Brandon Coleman—a regular fixture in the Kamasi Washington band.

We’re told that Resistance is a “powerful statement” from an artist who is passionate about hybridity and innovation—stitching together threads from jazz, disco, boogie, R&B, electro, soul, and funk. “I’ve been in the studio a lot in recent years, writing with this or that artist and I always felt constrained… like I had to compromise and submit to a ‘pop’ sensibility,” he explains. “This time I just wanted to create something that was really free… something original… to incorporate all the styles that I represent, because often when I’ve tried to do that in the past it’s been met with resistance.

The list of artists with whom Coleman has collaborated ranges from Ciara to Mulatu Astatke and Childish Gambino to Shuggie Otis—but one of his most consistent studio partners during the last decade has been R&B icon Babyface. “I’ve learned a lot from him… working on countless projects… he would just call me at any time and say: ‘Hey man, I’m in the studio with Aretha Franklin at the piano and I want you to come in and help us arrange some songs.’ And I would be like: Erm ok, I’m on my way,’” he says. “Those experiences shaped the way I hear and appreciate music”.

Coleman has previously worked with Flying Lotus on music for Bladerunner, FlyLo’s directorial debut Kuso, and he also plays on “Until The Quiet Comes” and “You’re Dead!”

The release follows Dorian Concept’s Nature of Imitation album.

Paranoid London to Release New EP as Tribute to Late LGBTQ Activist and DJ, Bubbles

Paranoid London will release a new EP paying tribute to Bubbles, the San Francisco DJ, artist, and LGBTQ activist who was shot and killed in September last year.

We understand that the English duo met Bubbles, real name Anthony Torres, at Sunset Campout last year and decided to make a track together—before Bubbles was killed in San Francisco’s Tenderloin district in a late-night incident.

Using audio from Bubbles’ Facebook posts, Paranoid London have now created a three-track EP, credited to Paranoid London with Bubbles Bubblesynski, and scheduled for August 17 release. It’s Paranoid London’s first release since 2016’s  Give Me The / Our Man Though. All proceeds will be donated to St. James Infirmary and Lyon Martin, and the original artwork piece is also being auctioned off for the cause.

“Everybody on the West Coast knew Bubbles Bubblesynski. We were going to make a record with him before he was murdered. We made it anyway with audio from his Facebook posts and we’ll be donating all profits to 2 LGBTQ friendly organizations in San Francisco.” Paranoid London

Dorian Concept Shares New Album Cut, “J Buyers”

Dorian Concept has shared “J Buyers,” the latest single taken from is forthcoming The Nature of Imitation album.

Born Oliver Thomas Johnson, the self-taught keyboardist and producer first caught the attention of the Brainfeeder crew in its infancy when head honcho Flying Lotus discovered Dorian Concept’s MySpace profile and included a remix in his debut Essential Mix (2008). Dorian Concept went on to tour with FlyLo’s live band, appeared at some of Brainfeeder’s earliest international label nights in 2009, and released a string of EPs and albums for Kindred Spirits imprint Nod Navigators, Affine, and Ninja Tune—as well as remixing Taylor McFerrin, contributing production to Thundercat’s The Golden Age of Apocalypse, and playing keys on Flying Lotus’ Cosmogramma

The record takes inspiration from multi-generational eclecticism (‘60s jazz, ‘70s fusion, ‘80s neo prog-rock, ‘90s electronica). We’re told that Dorian Concept sought to replicate “modern” music elements with old-fashioned methods, live-playing, and hand-recording deceptively digital sounds in service of a tongue-in-cheek “parody of nostalgia.” He produced the record largely in 2016 and 2017.

“J Buyers” finds Dorian Concept with one eye on the dancefloor, controlling the chaos at his fingertips as aptly demonstrated on the latest in a string of  live “fooling around” videos where he teased a live version of “J Buyers” on social media (amassing over 50k views in less than 24 hours).

The Nature of Imitation is out digitally on August 3, the CD drops on August 17, and the vinyl LP follows on September 14. Meanwhile, you can stream “J Buyers” via the player below.

Onipa “Open My Eyes”

Onipa, meaning “human” in Akan, the ancient language of the Ashanti people of Ghana, is also the project of longtime friends KOG (Kweku of Ghana of KOG and the Zongo Brigade) and Tom Excell (MD, guitarist and writer of jazz/ soul afrobeat pioneers Nubiyan Twist). They push a fresh, raw, and fiercely energetic new sound, fusing electronics and deep afro grooves.

Having played their first show to 5000 people in Australia to commemorate Nelson Mandela’s 100th birthday, and performed at The Great Escape in Brighton, the project is picking up momentum. In September they’ll release a debut EP on London label Wormfood and Paris-based Mawimbi, both of whom have been pushing their own brand of homegrown Afro-electronic music.

The first single, “Open My Eyes,” combines classic, shiny, Congolese-style soukous guitar licks with a funky afro-disco beat and KOG’s trademark vocals, alternating between Pidgin, Ga, and English in a nostalgic piece about self-love and making your own way. The release is available now via the WeTransfer button below—or here for EU readers due to temporary GDPR restrictions.
