Ron Morelli Reveals New Album on Hospital Productions, ‘Disappearer’

Next up on Hospital Productions is a new album from L.I.E.S. boss Ron Morelli, titled Disappearer.

The 2×12” and cassette is Morelli’s third full-length and follows several solo appearances on Hospital, the cult label of Dominick Fernow (a.k.a Prurient, Vatican Shadow).

We’re told to expect 13 tracks of “cold stripped-back electronics with punk roots” that form “a nasty sonic narrative that reaches an explosive unsettling apex.” It was composed over the last two years “in various foul states,” and is “a fusion of base-level hardware programming, open room mic recordings, and extensive computer processing,” all finalized in the Paris studio of Krikor Kouchian.

Novation Releases Circuit v.1.7

Novation has released the latest update to its Circuit groovebox, sequencer, and performance instrument.

The new v1.7 update brings some much-requested user functions, including Pattern Chain Sequence, which allows complex sequences of patterns and pattern chains to be made (up to 32 patterns and 16 chains of patterns can be selected in any order); Tied/Drone Notes, which gives each step a tie-forward setting, making it possible to tie notes together in order to create drone notes and long ambient pads; and Synth Micro Nudge, which gives the user the ability to delay notes on a step from one to five ticks (each step is divided up into six ticks).

You can download the update here.

Cantor “Ethermin”

Tráfico Music’s next release—landing July 31—is a 12-track showcase aiming to showcase of all the artists associated with the label. We’re told to expect a “wealth of unusual, hard to define music that exists in the shadowy regions between various different genres.”

Headed up by bosses Concret (a.k.a the Italian/Mexican duo of Diego Angelico Escobar and Q-Pha), Tráfico is a label known for synth-heavy and left-of-centre disco and techno grooves laced with the overtones of their local environment. Besides from the label heads, the label has featured music from the likes of Toy Tonics, Nein, Roam, Her Majestys Ship, and Wonder Stories.

In support of the upcoming Tráfico Music VA Vol. 1, you can download Cantor’s “Ethermin,” a stripped back rumbling techno roller, via the WeTransfer button below—or here for EU readers due to temporary GDPR restrictions.

XLR8R’s August Festival Selections

As the festival market grows with every year, it becomes harder and harder to stand out amongst the countless events on offer across the globe. New promoters are having to come up with inspired formats and locations to lure punters in with a delicate balancing act between accessibility and uniqueness, while long-running institutions look to stay fresh each year with reputable forward-thinking bookings. August’s festival offering is a manifestation of this trend, with finely-tuned veterans and newcomers to the festival scene presenting a range of inspired events, from raves in abandoned power stations to technology-driven audio-visual feasts.

Houghton—August 9-12, Houghton Hall, United Kingdom.

The Craig Richards-curated Houghton Festival was, arguably, the festival highlight of last summer, establishing it as the go-to UK festival for underground styles. With the scenic English countryside setting of Houghton Hall as its backdrop, and the stages and environment designed by the people behind Gottwood, Houghton makes for a truly magical experience. Add to that some of the finest DJs in the world playing non-stop music for four days with a free-form music policy and a nonchalant attitude toward set times, and you have an almost faultless formula. Unfortunately, the success of last year has meant that tickets sold out almost instantly this year but if you managed to get one you are in for a treat. Our picks of the new names include Zip, Binh, Francesco Del Garda, and Move D, joining the likes of Ricardo Villalobos, Sonja Moonear, Ben UFO, Magda, Optimo, and Margaret Dygas for their second year.

Sonus—August 19-23, Zrce Beach, Croatia.

For its fifth anniversary, Sonus has added even more quality names to its already hugely impressive lineup. Craig Richards, Digby, Cezar, Ricardo Villalobos, Jamie Jones, Peggy Gou, and many more will play the five-day festival on the gorgeous coastline of Pag Island. Sonus is a festival that transcends many different styles within dance music, integrating more commercial-leaning artists with underground heads to great effect—you can, for example, experience Len Faki melting minds with rolling, heavy techno and later get lost in the minimal grooves of Rhadoo. Set in five club settings on the beach, all fitted with quality sound systems, the music and views alone make the journey worthwhile.

Dekmantel—August 1-8, Amsterdam Bos, Netherlands.

Year on year, Dutch electronic music institution Dekmantel has proven how to put on a festival while presenting interesting, left-field bookings. The sound system and stage settings are second-to-none, the queues minimal, the crowd knowledgeable and respectful, and the music is in a class of its own. This year you can catch artists such as A.R.E. (a.k.a. Shabaka Hutchings, Hieroglyphic Being, and Sarathy Korwar), Orbital, Ricardo Villalobos, Gesloten Cirkel, Errorsmith, Modeselektor, Helena Hauff, Shackleton, Rødhåd, DJ Stingray, Jamie xx, and Carl Craig (presenting his Versus Synthesizer Ensemble). Once again taking place in Amsterdam Bos and running from August 1 to 5, Dekmantel should be at the top of the list for any discerning dance-music fan.

Dimensions—August 29-Septemebr 2, Pula, Croatia.

Dimensions Festival has become a major attraction for those who want to catch diverse bookings in a beautiful and perfectly executed environment. The setting of Dimensions is a major selling point; located on a peninsula 20 minutes from the historic city of Pula, the festival takes place in an abandoned 200-year-old fortress overlooking the Adriatic sea. Kraftwerk are the main headline act this year and the inadvertent founding fathers of techno are in great company for the opening night at the iconic Roman amphitheatre, performing alongside Nils Frahm, Moodymann, Nubya Garcia, Josey Rebelle, and Debora Ipekel—and that’s just the first night. Artists from across the electronic musical lexicon are also set to play across the festival’s run, including Steve O’Sullivan (live), Margaret Dygas, Nina Kraviz, Pearson Sound, Skee Mask, Nicolas Lutz, Bonobo (DJ), Children of Zeus, and many more.

Waking Life—August 15-19, Crato, Portugal.

The second edition of Waking Life takes place from August 15 to August 19 near the medieval town of Crato, Portugal. The five-day arts and music festival continues the success of last year with names such as SIT, Vlada, Thomas Melchior, Priku, Call Super, Kettenkarussell, and many more. Portugal has built up a reputation as a fastly growing hub for good music and events over the past few years due to liberal licensing laws—a perfect environment for underground music to flourish. The setting for Waking Life is vast and deserted, situated in a village in Northern Alentejo, which is known as one of the most deserted regions in Southern Europe. Another magical environment to catch some of the best DJs and live acts in groove-based electronic music.

Voltage Festival—August 18-19, Transfo Zwevegem, Belgium.

Belgium’s Voltage Festival is one of the most unique festivals on the techno market. Voltage goes down at an old abandoned electricity plant in Transfo Zwevegem from August 18 to 19, and will feature some of the leading names in contemporary techno, including the b2b pairing of Ancient Methods and Tommy Four Seven, Rrose, Cosmin TRG, Chris Liebing, Inigo Kennedy, Headstrong (a.k.a. Clouds & Randomer), Kr!z, MPIA3 (Truss), Slam, Speedy J, SP-X (hybrid live), SHDW and Obscure Shape, 999999999, Boston 168, Phara and Border One, and Perc and Ansome, the latter of which will play a special live hybrid set.

The rave will run across three stages: Turbine, Anode, and Rotor. Turbine is the industrial indoor component, situated in the center of the electricity plant; Anode is the awe-inspiring outdoor stage, located right under a twisting array of power lines and nodes; and Rotor, another outdoor stage that sets its focus on emerging Belgian artists, shows the festival’s commitment to supporting the growing local scene.

Techno fans, don’t sleep on this one.

FAT FAT FAT Festival—August 3-5, Grancia di Sarrocciano, Italy.

Now in its third year, Italy’s FAT FAT FAT Festival is a weekend-long event that aims to combine local electronic music, art, and historic architecture with cutting-edge international acts. The festivities go down from August 3 to 5 at the picturesque Grancia di Sarrocciano site near Corridonia, with a musical ethos that focuses on house, jazz, hip-hop, disco, and more experimental avenues. This year, FAT FAT FAT Festival will partner with one of Italy’s leading avant-garde jazz festivals Jazz:Re:Found, who will take care of the FAT FAT FAT’s opening concert, hosting sets from Jaxx Madicine, Dego & Kaidi (live), and Madlib (DJ). FAT FAT FAT will also feature performances from Floating Points, Ben UFO, Egyptian Lover, Larry Heard aka Mr. Fingers (live), Detroit’s Marcellus Pittman, Sadar Bahar & Lee Collins, GE-OLOGY, Volcov, Bradley Zero, LTJ XPERIENCE, Nu Guinea, Baby G, Molinaro, and FAT FAT FAT Soundsystem.

Neopop—August 8-9, Viana do Castelo, Portugal.

Continuing the strong contribution from Portuguese festivals in August is Neopop. Set in the beautiful coastal city of Porto, Neopop has an envy-inducing lineup full of some of the biggest names in dance music. Headlining this year are the consistent party starters Apollonia, German techno don Ben Klock, St. Germain, Iva Smagghe, Nina Kraviz, Nastia, Jeff Mills, Fjaak, and many more. Each day will go down across a set of large stages with incredible visuals at a historic port next to the sea. The coastal town of Viana do Castelo is a destination worth visiting on its own, so we recommend staying after the festivities to take in the local sights and scenery.

MUTEK Montréal—August 22-27, Montréal, Canada.

This year’s MUTEK Montréal highlights women in music, running in conjunctions with its focus on live electronic music and visual art performances and technology. Always a gem in the festival calendar, MUTEK will this year feature performances from Caterina Barbieri, Machine Woman, RAMZi, Honey Dijon, Anthony Linell (a.k.a. Abdulla Rashim), Chloé, Moomin, Dasha Rush, Kenny Larkin, Equiknoxx, and many more. This year will be MUTEK’s 19th year in the game and after nearly two decades in operation, it’s staggering that they so consistently deliver one of the best festival experiences on the planet.

S.M.O.D. (a.k.a. Smilla & Oliver Deutschmann) “Operation”

Last month, Oliver Deutschmann teamed up with Smilla under the S.M.O.D. alias to release A Form Of Travel Unkown To Humans, a new EP on Taktschleife.

The EP is full of precise and varied techno, from the intricate rhythms of the opening cut, “Sticks,” to the fierce propulsion of “Cell Culture” and the closing track’s haunting atmospheres and broken beat grooves. Each cut, when played at the right time, will undoubtedly cause dancefloor lunacy.

In support of the EP, S.M.O.D. have offered up a devastating bonus track titled “Operation” as today’s XLR8R download. The track, an 11-minute exercise in dark techno, features a stomping four-four groove and weighty bassline, bone-chilling synths, and rippling textures, resulting in an early-morning club weapon.

You can grab “Operation” below, with A Form Of Travel Unkown To Humans available for purchase here.

Romania’s Misbits Record Store Announces New Label

Romania’s Misbits Record Store will launch its label arm on July 30 with a 13-track various artist EP.

Situated on a quiet residential street in Bucharest, Misbits was opened in 2013 by Parlog Ioana (a.k.a. Miss I) as a space where like-minded people could come and listen to music, socialize, and relax—as Miss I states: “It’s a place where friends can listen and enjoy good records like we did in my old room.” Over the years, the space has attracted the best electronic music talent in Romania and globally to find music, play sets, and host events, and is now seen as an integral part of the Romanian electronic music community.

The idea behind Misbits Recordings was spawned in the studio where Miss I and her colleague Cosmin Dumitru (a.k.a. Momentdat)  have been making ambient music for some time. They curated an event in April to coincide with the launch of the release—an immersive concept that brought the music closer to the listener. After the success of the event, the first release, a VA EP titled The Emerald, was conceived, featuring three tracks on side A and 10 locked grooves on side B from Romeo Poirier, Boris Hegenbart, David Moss (a.k.a. duo-mono-lith), Christopher James Chaplin, Samuel Damiany & Pierre Marty (a.k.a. Shōen 荘園), Maria Balabas cu Punct8, and Parlog Ioana and Dumitru-Radu Cosmin (a.k.a. Smooth Operators).

The Emerald is set for release on July 30, with presales up now on Misbits, Decks, Deejay, and Juno

Dadub Return with New 12″

Dadub will return in September with a new 12″ via the label arm of Tbilisi’s Bassiani club.

Dadub is a project formed by Daniele Antezza and Marco Donnarumma. Much of their material has landed on Lucy’s Stroboscopic Artefacts, including 2013’s debut album You Are Eternity. Now, after some years of silence and “countless hours experimenting with new dub techniques inspired by obscure science fiction material and the physical force of low frequencies,” they say, the duo will return. It will be their first full release in five years and the first solo artist record for Bassiani’s label following a series of five compilation EPs.

It features two original tracks and a remix by Bassiani resident Zesknel.

In the past five years, we have been silent, and we have been progressing. Dadub is back for good, and we humbly offer this solo release as an ode to the worldwide ‘Rituals of Resistance happening right now. Thanks Bassiani, we couldn’t have a better home.—Dadub

“Rituals of Resistance” makes use of tribal drums, ghostly echoing samples taken from the collective consciousness. Emotive techno in its dubbiest prime evokes scenes of territories uncharted by global repression. Dadub present their very own vision of techno politics. Not shy to tap into a glitch, familiar sounds emerge from a well-orchestrated chaos. An acutely bass driven sense for rhythm combines with the inevitable esoteric beauty of hand-crafted Italian techno. This is the soundtrack for all those who yearn for an inner revolution.”— Bassiani

Jungle Detail New Album, ‘For Ever’

Jungle will release a new album via XL Recordings in September, titled For Ever.

Towards the end of 2013, Jungle burst onto the scene with their first two singles: “The Heat” and “Platoon.” Appearing out of nowhere and propelled by word of mouth online, the group transformed over the next few years from an anonymous production duo to a personality-filled seven-piece live band built around the core founding duo of Josh Lloyd-Watson and Tom McFarland (known respectively as “J” and “T”)—best friends since the age of nine, having grown up on the same road in Shepherds Bush, London. They formed Jungle in 2013 and their 2014 debut album was one of the year’s defining debut records.

More recently, Jungle returned with a set of new songs, “Happy Man” and “House In LA,” taken from their forthcoming second album and each showcasing a different side of their sound. We’re told that if Jungle’s first album was their imaginary soundtrack to the places they had never been, their new record captures the landscapes they had so often dreamed of. To write and record the new album, J and T swapped Shepherds Bush for the Hollywood Hills. Their romanticization of The California Dream clashed with the reality of living it—although the experience led them back home to London to finish the album, the journey itself ultimately defined the music it produced.

The album is titled For Ever and will be released on September 14th via XL Recordings. It’s described by the label as “deeper and higher, more intimate and more expansive, feelgood and, just occasionally, feel bad.”

To coincide with news, Jungle have today released two new songs from the record: “Heavy, California” and “Cherry.” Both songs are available now via all digital services and are accompanied by two videos directed by Josh Lloyd-Watson & Charlie Di Placido for the JFC collective. The videos are exclusively available via Spotify and Apple Music respectively.

Premiere: Hear a Sun-Drenched Remix From Austin Ato

Brazilian duo Balako‘s latest single on Greco-Roman, “Jungle Music,” has been remixed by Scottish producer Austin Ato.

The single landed on Greco-Roman back in May, furthering the duo’s sound, which combines a mind-bending array of styles, from house to salsa, carimbo, disco, funk, and soul, into infectious live recordings inspired by the “magical urban jungle that is Rio de Janeiro,” the duo state.

Now, “Jungle Music” returns with an inspired rework from Austin Ato, who refits the free-flowing original with a more club-based framework. Ato stays true to the sun-drenched vibe Balako have laid out, but with a more DJ-friendly backbone; a feel-good dancefloor cut in line with his work on Futureboogie and Man Power’s Me Me Me imprint.

You can stream the remix in full via the player below.
