RP Boo Lines Up New Planet Mu LP

RP Boo will release a new album on Planet Mu

I’ll Tell You What! is the Chicago footwork artist’s third album, following two LPs of archival material, namely 2013’s Legacy, and 2015’s Fingers, Bank Pads & Shoe Prints, both of which introduced broader audiences to his sonic history, some of it 15 years after it was first recorded to a four-track. Much of his work before that had been confined to small white labels and self-released mix tapes. This album marks the first time he’s released an album of contemporary material shortly after creating it.

The title, a favorite maxim of his, welcomes listeners to sit down and let him narrate in the abstract fashion that he is known for. He explores familiar motifs, such as the cosmos, movement, and opposition, using densely interwoven vocals, percussion, and evil humming bass.

We’re told that the main difference between this record and his prior work is now we hear Boo tell new stories about preaching his gospel outside of Chicago, from his experiences touring the globe over the last five years.

It continues a busy year for Planet Mu, one that has included releases from DJ Taye, Anthoney J Hart (a.k.a East Man), µ-Ziq and more.

Arp Announces New Album, ‘Zebra’

Arp, the moniker of New York producer, DJ, composer, and multi-instrumentalist Alexis Georgopoulos, has announced Zebra, his first full-length for Mexican Summer—his fifth album in total.

The album arrives after several years of quiet for Arp, in which Georgopoulos released a collaborative album with Jefre Cantu-Ledesma, started a regular show on NTS Radio, and retreated to the studio to write and record.

We’re told to expect a work that references ambient music, spiritual jazz, minimalism, pop, kosmische, and much more.  It’s described as “a post-everything symbiosis of ancient to future psychotropics, emphasizing points of connectivity between far-flung traditions.”

Three of Georgopoulos’ earlier albums have arrived on Smalltown Supersound. He also released a cassette full-length for Geographic North, released in 2016.

¡Súbelo, Cuba! ‘Traketeo’ (Feat. Luz de Cuba)

Next up on Gilles Peterson‘s Brownswood is Havana Cultura: ¡Súbelo, Cuba!

The album showcases an extended network of like-minded, forward-thinking musicians driving Cuba’s music forward. Following repeated trips to connect with venues, collectives, and DJs, Peterson and Will LV—one half of LV, who’ve released on Hyperdub and Keysound amongst others—linked up with DJ Jigüe, a much-respected producer and DJ, whose Guámpara label has charted new directions for Cuban music. The album features his extended network of collaborators, connecting Afro-Cuban traditions with contemporary movements and ideas.

It was recorded across two weeks in Havana in early 2018. It features Yissy García, an internationally-lauded drummer who leads the band Bandancha (and is the daughter of Bernardo García, one of the founders of legendary group Irakere); Yasek Manzano, a trumpet player schooled at New York’s prestigious Julliard music school, who’s collaborated with the likes of D’Joy de Cuba and Wichy de Vedado; El Individuo, an MC who’s part of Havana’s Con100cia collective; Negro WadPro, a percussionist / producer who, as well as producing his own beats, is a regular at different Havana nightspots; Kamerum, whose music—produced for his peers in Guámpara as well as his own tracks—bridges the Caribbean with America; and finally, Sigrid, a musician and vocalist who blends neo-soul with Cuban touchstones like son and filin.

We’re told that the album provides “a snapshot of a unique club culture that’s fast evolving.” On the one hand, it’s indebted to Cuba’s unique characteristics, where regularly-practiced traditions are colored by intermittently-experienced cultures from outside.  On the other, it’s part of a global shift toward decentred club music, with homegrown, influence-grabbing dance cultures tilting attention from club culture’s traditional epicenters.

Brownswood Recordings is the independent record label founded by DJ, record collector and broadcaster Gilles Peterson. Started in 2006, it’s a platform for new artists and music creatives, as well as an outlet for established acts to do something different.

Havana Cultura: ¡Súbelo, Cuba! will land on June 28, with “Traketeo” (Feat. Luz de Cuba) available to download in full via the button below.

Prairie ‘Underwater Body Hunting’

Late last month, Prairie—Brussels-based multi-instrumentalist and producer Marc Jacobs—released his latest album, After The Flash Flood, on Denovali Records

The album follows a 2013 EP (I’m So In Love I Almost Forgot I Survived A Disaster) and a 2015 LP (Like a Pack of Hounds) on Berlin imprint Shitkatapult with 10 deeply-moving cuts. The album showcases Jacobs’ love of narrative in a cinematic offering that flows through blackened drones and frozen textures with a post-apocalyptic theme at its core—a soundtrack to the apocalypse if it “was painted in several layers of pastel gouache.” Sonically ruined guitar lines, processed field recordings, subtle drum programming, and warped synths provide the source material across the album, which Jacobs flips into new territory.

In support of the album, Denovali has offered up tense album cut “Underwater Body Hunting” as today’s XLR8R download, available via WeTransfer below.

Premiere: Hear a Sun-Drenched House Cut From Theo Kottis

Next month, Theo Kottis will return with his debut LP, Beautiful Strangers.

Beautiful Strangers signals a new chapter for Kottis, presenting the first in a trilogy of LPs inspired by the fundamental human need for connection. With iconic Glasgow institution Sub Club—a spiritual home for Theo both as a resident and a clubber—as a touchstone, Beautiful Strangers delivers seven club-based tracks that reflect Kottis’ versatile DJ style, from the breakbeat grooves of opening cut “The Get Down” to the inspired acid house of “Acid Disco” and the closing cut’s floating melancholia.

In support of the LP, which you can pre-order here, Kottis has offered up a full stream of the album’s beautifully sun-drenched cut “Reasons,” available via the player below.

Minimal Violence Next on Ninja Tune’s Technicolour

The next release on Ninja Tune‘s Technicolour comes in the shape of a two-track EP from Minimal Violence

Formed in 2015 the duo, consisting of Ashlee Luk and Lida P, have a string of releases to date with labels such as Lobster Theremin, 1080p, and Jungle Gym Records. They also make up two parts of Sacred Sound Club, an artist collective, label, and event series focused on shifting the narrative of the Vancouver music scene towards its heavier more experimental community.

This new two-track release, their Technicolour debut, was recorded in the Autumn of 2017 at Vancouver’s Deep Blue,  a non-profit space. It’s their first music to be recorded outside their usual home production space. “It feels like that separation has had a distinct impact on how we write,” the duo explain. “The division of time spent in the studio tracking in ideas vs time spent at home refining those ideas lent to a new workflow.”

The result is a record that “intends to reduce pop music to its emotive qualities and apply that abstract nostalgia back into dance tracks,” the label explains.

Tracklisting:

1. MVX

2. U41A

MVX / U41A is scheduled for June 1 release, with “MVX” streaming below.

Teste Return After 25 years with BITE EP

Teste will return after 25 years with a new EP on BITE, the Berlin-based imprint of Hayden Payne (a.k.a Phase Fatale) and Florian Engerling.

Formed during the early ’90s in Hamilton, Ontario, Teste put out only three official records between 1992-1993 on Probe Records, most notably “The Wipe,” while the follow-up “Regions” also served as a template for the ensuing sonics of contemporary techno. The original Teste lineup then disbanded and the project vanished for decades until reactivating in 2014 when it began promoting a slew of remixes on the Edit Select imprint.

Teste now return as a duo formed by the original member David Foster, still at large as /ϟ/HUREN/ϟ/, and Martin Maischein (a.k.a Goner).

We’re told that The Box Man picks up where Teste last left off, with “their revolutionary vision of techno that “continues to further their interdimensional manifestation of insanity and formation.”

The five-tracker will be BITE’s second release.
